To be as clear as possible - we're all-in on the Epic Store. We love what they're trying to accomplish for both devs and customers, & they are awesome to work with. Will RGO come to other stores? At some point, sure, but not for a while.
It makes sense for them. Obviously the lower vendor cost is a big deal, but as an early headline act in a tiny handful of competitors they will probably get way more traction than they would ever get on Steam where they would be buried under the constant rising tide of shovelware. Once they have passed the peak point of the early sales boom, then they can put it up on Steam to net any holdouts.
I don't feel like splitting my library even further (it's already fractured enough between Steam/Origin/Uplay/GOG) - especially to some startup store that has a good chance of not being around in a few years. Will yarr on release, and buy when it hits Steam.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Epic says they will give out 1 free game every 2 weeks on the store starting with Subnautica next week and going by what games they have so far, it seems some of these better titles will have the possibility to end up free in 2019 at some point unless they suddenly get a lot more releases to the platform.
Subnautica for free? They sure are pulling some heavy stuff to get people to use their platform. I just bought it at kinguin.net for €13-14 since I'm about to replay it and I think the game is worth the money.
Next game after Subnautica is Super Meat Boy (doesn't everybody have that game in Steam?)
Hey, so it’s announced that Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is going to be launching on the Epic Games Store! We’re really excited about that. We also have gotten a lot of questions and concerns about it, so we’re gonna try to answer those and lay all this out as best we can.
Q) So that means it’s not going to launch on Steam or GoG? What gives?
A) Yes, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is going to be exclusively on the Epic Store for a while. Eventually it’ll make its way elsewhere. (Console releases are not tied to this)
Q) You’re being a coy bastard. How long, and don’t be a weasel.
A) 12 months from launch.
Q) Exclusives are anti-consumer, why would you do this? (you monster)
A) OK, so that’s a little complicated. And our answer is long-winded. Bear with us.
So, before Valve and the 70/30 split it was pretty darn rough to be an indie (both in terms of royalty share and in terms of the ability to sell things without a publisher). We can all thank Valve for using their leverage to make that happen, and usher in the era we have now. We think it’s safe to say that a large percentage of the games made today wouldn’t exist without it.
Epic is using their leverage to push that even farther, to 88/12. That’s another whole strata of developers who can survive.
Would we like that to become the new standard?
Yes.
Can that be done without leverage?
No.
Is some form of exclusive content required to get the momentum to make that happen?
Yes.
And we’re willing to get on board to make that happen. The only way this gets any traction is with some exclusive content and we’re willing to be one of the canaries in the mineshaft.
Do we hope there is a big upside for us? Sure. That’d be amazing. But we also hope this is the start of establishing a new standard.
Q) That just means more money in your pocket, (you monster!!)
A) I mean yes, ideally. It’s a new store right now though, and that prospect is more of a long term one. Right? But we really hope and suspect that in the long run this will be better for us financially. That’s how we make more and better stuff.
Q) OK, maybe this is good for developers, but how is this good for customers? (still a monster)
A) From our standpoint as customers, a curated store with a more limited selection of quality games is a plus. Having the ability for you to share your emails with us (optionally) so we can communicate directly with you is hopefully also a plus for you. Competition for Steam is a plus. And in the longer term, achieving Epic’s goals on the royalty front means more developers succeeding and surviving and making more good stuff. That’s a longer play, but we think it’s still meaningful.
Moreover, it doesn’t remove Steam or other stores from the equation. We’ve all got big Steam libraries that aren’t going anywhere. Yes, this is exclusive right now, but that’s all sort of bound up in the store’s launch and this specific point in time.

1 year exclusive to the Epic store is kind of shooting themselves in the foot. By the time it reaches Steam or GOG those that might have wanted it will have moved on to other things, pirated it or just wait for it to be marked down at a high discount in one of the sales just due to it being an older title at that point.
Trouble is, indie devs have started doing their stuff for the money, more than the 'love of developing', which places like Epic will prey on. Sure, a 12/88 sounds great in principle but when that's only 88% of 10,000, I think 70% of 100,000 probably sounds a lot more enticing...
Epic are quickly going to realise that this is not really going to work so well, and they're abusing the concept of being 'indie' in order to further their own gains - I'm waiting for crossover Fortnite consumables from other games in order to make even more cash.
Of course Valve are being dicks. But unless another store appears, like GoG, but not actually directly linked to a publisher this time... Steam is still going to reign in the PC gaming world for some time to come.

lmao ... that must have been glorious bag of fortnite cash
I was recently reading reports that Phoenix Point's devs got more than $2m from the Epicloot$ack, not mindblowing in the grand scheme of things but still quite a lot for such small companies. Safe early bribe, a dozen of accidental sales from dabbing teenagers and then the long wait for 2020 with the hope that everyone else will still be ready to push the Gabe-shaped button with a happy face on. Will the plan work? Guess we'll find out next year
Thanks for that video, this game does look great so it will be a download till it is out on Steam. At least they do not plan for any paid DLC or Season Pass nonsense so by the time it out for Steam all the free DLC should be done and it will be the complete edition.
If i was running a studio i'd take epic cash 100%, constant uncertainty about the future and lack of stability in smalltime gamedev is very fucking annoying. If it would ensure that my company survives for a few years more and has cash to do better stuff its basically a nobrainer.
Its not fun to live on the edge of collapse like obsidian did for ages.
That looks like it would have been a pretty cool Star Wars game but EA probably already knew they were doing space stuff with Battlefront 2 so they didn't want to compete with themselves as they were probably banking on the possibility of the SW Lootbox money from Battlefront being a big money grab for them.
and Valve didn't pay for 3rd party content because of half life 2?
well, epic has fortnite serving that function, which lured way more people to the platform than half-life 2 ever did for steam, and they still want more more more!
what an ass.
please yarr this, guys.
