So disappointed in this season. The lack of budget as well as vision is turning it into a bore fest. It seems like they're trying to get through the story in the cheapest way possible: dialogue, more dialogue, extended shots of nothing in particular, no extravaganza, no fun as opposed to the first season that was filled with everything and then some.
Just finished the American bingewatch as well, alas (but not unexpected) the ride #2 with Betty the Barbarian was indeed a bumpy one and mostly devoid of pathos and visual surprises. Practically the opposite of what made S01 so unique to begin with, a shame
It still has its moments and the acting is still competent, but the highly imaginative scenes and good old bizarre 'Hannibal on steroids' Fullerian vibes were replaced by more conventional bits where the fierce divinities suddenly turn into flabby humans with little to offer. The new gods being pesky edgelords doesn't really make things easier either.
I genuinely hope the next season will have enough resources to restore at least part of the original mood, such an interesting concept would merit more care dammit. *adds two drops of love-infused blood*
Finished season 2 and yes, I do find it weaker as well. I still loved it though, I just really like most characters, very well cast across the board. It's rather sad that one of, if not the best of them is gone, unless they decide to bring said character back, which might as well happen.

EXCLUSIVE: Marilyn Manson is joining with the beautiful people of American Gods for the Starz series’ third season.
No stranger to the small screen, the Sons of Anarchy alum will play blood-thirsty Johan Wengren, lead singer of the Viking death metal band Blood Death — well within the shock rocker’s wheelhouse. Wengren and Blood Death are also a source of power for the Ian McShane-portrayed Mr. Wednesday in his war with the New Gods.
“As a long-time admirer of his estimable talent as an author, artist, musician and actor, it is dope indeed to be working with Mr. Manson in Season 3 of American Gods,” showrunner Chic Eglee said of the new addition to the Ricky Whittle-led ensemble based on EP Neil Gaiman’s award-winning 2001 novel.
“Bringing his specific energy, wit and boundless enthusiasm for all-things-Neil Gaiman to the role of Johan, a Norse ‘berserker’ in service to Odin, his performance promises to be disturbing, original and uniquely entertaining,” Eglee added.

Enjoyed the first two episodes. While it's not as crazy and high budget as the first season it's different and more enjoyable than the second, feeling more coherent and better written. So far. Also nice to see Stormare back.
It's a shame that all the melodrama surrounding the show's (d)evolution made it turn into something entirely different from its first season, once again it feels like watching a knock off that mixes random choreographic Fullerisms borrowed from the past with generic low brow vibes. It's still watchableish thanks to its roadshow-y spirit and the good actors left, but so much potential has gone to waste :'(

I agree. I absolutely loved the first season. The second season felt like absolutely nothing happened, ie. a complete filler season. Imagine taking over from the showrunners with a lower budget.
Quote:
Fuller and Green had scripted the first six episodes of season two, but they were thrown out once Alexander was hired to rewrite them. The season two episode order was trimmed from ten to eight episodes, similar to season one, in an attempt to trim the budget. The first season was $30 million over budget. Cast members were unhappy with the new scripts and they were often rewritten on set, including Ian McShane improvising dialogue.
They fired Jesse Alexander (showrunner for the second season) and instead of finding a better one they just:
"With no showrunner, producing director Chris Byrne and line producer Lisa Kussner were left in charge."
I do feel that the third season (so far) is better than the second season when it comes to story progression although it's lacking all that pizzazz from the first season with it's craziness.
One of my fave scenes from the first season is still that bank fraud/robbery scene from episode 3. It was brilliantly written and executed.
Not a single showrunner, writer, or director has worked on it more than a season.
