So the director says they are going to redesign Sonic's look due to everyone complaining about it.
"Thank you for the support. And the criticism," Fowler wrote. "The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design and you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be..."

This is good news. They will probably go the well accepted Detective Pikachu route, meaning keeping the fur and realistic texturing of the current version, but reverting to the shape of the original game character.

I dunno about you guys but... back in the early days I was a Sega fan as in: owned all their consoles. Played Sonic a lot, I mean seriously a lot!
BUT!
I had 0 interest in this movie, haven't even been interested to see the trailer. I did see the memes and some awful screenshots that made me laugh. But seriously fuck em, fuck disney and fuck whoever is doing that pikachu shit. I won't give em clicks or money, not even to see how awful it is.

If they can re-render Sonic only, and also reuse most of the animation work and just drag and replace the model, maybe it won't be so expensive. Dunno if possible.

It is hard to say how far along they really were with all the Sonic CGI since the film is coming out in November, they may have just did the Sonic effects for the scenes we saw in the trailer. Either way Sega and Paramount both approved the original look so now they are going to have to pay for that mistake.

They can go game accurate sonic, but big. Which will be Wierd.
They clearly went for the furry look and it backfired.
Or it all could be a marketing stunt since all the leaked posters/promo shit clearly showed the early design and the uproar was already there.
A shit movie. Got a lot of attention. Make it seem like fans had the design change happen. They'll go see it to pat themselves on the back. Make money.
Theres no way this design was approved in prepro. It's a lot of monies to redo the cg. It's not a lot of monies to redo trailer cg. Especially since the last shot of Jim is pretty game accurate.

TBH who even wants a Sonic movie?
Until a few years ago I didn't even know that it has anykind of backstory. For me it was always about some creature that collects rings while running and jumping and sometimes fights a boss like Mario but on Sega.

I like your theory, the fabricated "see, we listened to the fans1!" lifebuoy when one has nothing to lose (or to offer, judging from that miserable trailer  ). It's a shame though because Hedgepajamahogman would have added more ridiculousness to the whole thing, always a plus when a movie is abysmal.

There's a fan base. There were numerous "successful" cartoons. A lot of kids adored them. And there is a story, baddie captured critters and you free them. Basic just like baddie captures critter and you rescue her. But it is a story. Which is similar here. Jim captures critters for his own evil deeds under the guise of helping and sanic stops him.
And sanic was always in prepro for a live action movie for a long long while.
