Headset price is fine. It's controllers + base stations that make it skyrocket.

Valve told the press they will be launching their VR "flagship" game - whatever that might be - end 2019 and that it won't be Index exclusive, but instead work with all headsets that connect to Steam.

Okay. I'm not as stoked about VR as I was 3 or so years ago when I preordered the Vive and the OR. This time I'll wait.

I've almost purchased the index today. Had it in my cart and then slapped myself in the face and saved 1100 euro Laughing I've kinda regretted every vr I've had so far (dk1, dk2, cv1) and always sold it after few weeks of usage (always with profit). it always comes down to the same issues with every headset: god rays, sweetspot, screendoor, sweat and lack of games after a week of playing tech demos.

The new Oculus Rift S looks like a reasonable deal at 450euro here compared to 1100euro for index...
Both have new LCD screens with better pixel RGB fill rate, Oculus inside out tracking so no need for sensors setup and cables which I am anal about. Valve has finger tracking and oculus only partially like it always had but it allows for grabbing, thumbs up and other gestures. I doubt full finger tracking will make much difference outside of tech demos as You just hold a gun in most games anyway Laughing
Also - I've seen some reports that knuckle controllers have terrible battery life but no idea about index yet.
The valve is clearly superior headset but Rift being more than two times cheaper, is not worse but just have some tradeoffs with index. Also - Rift S has a very useful cameras which show the feed when You reach set boundaries. Maybe index also has that.
Let's hopw Rift S will be great and play half life 3 the same was as index or else we all pay 1100 euro when hl3 it comes out Laughing

Is it? All reviews so far say otherwise... The tracking apparently is great and some say even more precise than with the cameras. Controllers are the same, LCD vs OLED is apples to oranges just like with the index. Looks more like little bit upgraded rift with less cables and full room scale tracking without 3 fucking cameras.
The switch to better filled RGB pattern, better optics (less god rays) and elimination of cameras is a worthy upgrade. The only downgrade confirmed 100% is shitty speakers. Original rift had very good koss porta pro headphones built it

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions until You've actually compared both...

Sold out in less than 30 minutes. https://uploadvr.com/index-preorders-sold-out/

Quote:
Preorders for the $999 Valve Index full bundle have now fully sold out. The preorder button has been replaced with a Reserve button, with the full bundle reading “Ships by Sep 30, 2019” in the USA.

In the USA, the initial shipment for the bundle sold out in less than 30 minutes. As of today it is also sold out in other supported regions, though they don’t list an availability month.

The other packages are more available, with the headset and controllers still listed as shipping by July 31. Controllers or base stations alone ship by June 28.

Of course, this doesn’t really tell us anything about how well Index preorders sold. We don’t know how many units Valve is producing, or what the company’s sales expectations were. But being sold out after less than a day does indicate the launch wasn’t a failure. Some expected that the $999 pricepoint would be too high for many, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Are they stupid?
Because both can be true: successful launch and many people finding the price too high.

At least they address that they have no clue on how many units were sold I guess. Laughing

only reason i didn't go for a rift s is the lack of manual ipd :/
it seemed like the perfect headset value vs pricerange, but i guess it comes at a cost of only one display hence no manual ipd.
would've ordered an index but just can't justify it without actually having seen some reviews.
i don't mind doing a little investment if it's worth it at this point in time, not if it looks like it'll get replaced again in less than a year.

software might get around the sweetspot issue when it comes to the actual image but there's no fix for physically looking at the lenses from the real sweetspot.
it was the same issue for me on the oculus go when i tried it, the eyestrain got pretty bad if your ipd isn't near the average they made the device for.

3D is far from dead (all recent movies i've seen still have 3D releases, well apart from drama and such obviously). VR is blooming in comparison to past decades and it will not die out. Personally i'm interested in it (VR) on and off, its a bit of a hassle, not too comfortable always either when you want to play for more than 1h...

3D is always interesting, 3D vision is fantastic, very hard to go back once you've experienced it on a big screen in good resolution.. movies can be one thing, its not always that great, but games are to 99% always way better in stereoscopic 3D (apart from some titles like strategy).

vr is amazing. Just needs better resolution, less glare and less sweating/heat and it's done!
Really interested to try quest, rift s and obviously index.

3D and VR have very little to do with each other, they honestly have as much to do with each other as books and comics do (...they are both on paper!!!), so there's no point in comparing them.

Rather real life = "stereoscopic 3D" Wink

That's why 3D will always be superior to 2D. 2D just doesn't cut it, neither for movies or for games, it will always be a very fake representation of how we see things naturally. I just love Witcher 3 when i stand on a mountain and some other landscape far off in the distance looks like it's really miles and miles away from where i am.

In 2D this feeling is totally fake "i understand what they're trying to do, but this doesn't look like it's approx. where my parents live IRL from this distance.."

Where VR is superior is much about control i think + being able to see things in full scale (this really sucks on a tiny monitor or even larger TV's).

And all "comic books" being "books"? The word "book" is in the name even so surely they are almost the same thing!!!1

Nope, different medium, audiences, trends, etc.

Watch a 3d movie in vr in app like bigscreen.
That's the real 3d.

Yup, 3D and VR are two very different things. One also happens to be shit (thus far) and the other (VR) is great.

what? why would 3D be shit? stereoscopic 3D is amazing. 2D is actually shit if you've ever seen proper stereoscopic 3D... at least for 3D games (not much point make 2D games in 3D, other than giving the background depth).

There are a few shit 3D movies, sure, but that doesn't make the tech shit.. tons of crappy VR game as well, still that doesn't make VR bad.
