And that's true: WB is not interested in rebooting The Matrix, but rather in exploring expanded universe concepts. And according to two independent sources we've spoken with, one idea that's gained a lot of support is a prequel film starring Michael B. Jordan as a young Morpheus.

Our understanding is that a Morpheus film has long been a concept favored by the folks at Warner Bros.
The studio has established a writer's room (a sure-fire sign that WB is gunning for multiple films/franchises), and our further understanding is that this Morpheus idea is one of several being kicked around.

Fuck these prequels, remasters and reboots in the face.

"Morpheus" would make a good multi-season TV series, I'll give them that.

I doubt that, focussing on just some (rather boring) character.

I whole tv show in the Matrix universe would be awesome though - if done well.

Morpheus was the weakest (most boring) character in the Matrix series.
But hey, let's make a prequel about him.

Then we'll have prequels about Neo, Smith, Trinity etc.

Fucking Hollywood. Facepalm

If Morpheus is boring then who exactly are the more interesting characters that you guys suggest? Because there are like 3 of them and Neo is out of the question since everything important that happened in his life has been covered in the films.

So it's between Morpheus and Trinity, and I find Morpheus more interesting because a Trinity film will have to feature Morpheus anyway.

Morpheus is the character we know the most about in the entire Matrix trilogy.

How he was freed and couldn't believe the truth until he saw the fields upon fields with his own eyes. How he recruited Trinity, Cypher and so on. What the Oracle told him about finding the One and how it changed him forever. How he was romantically involved with Niobe. How commander Lock had a rivalry with him. The cult that was built around him in Zion. How Cypher began hating the bastard.

Picture all other characters and what you know about them, and you'll realize we know less than that.

Consolitis, you kind of said all that was even mildly interesting about him.

I don't think Morpheus would be fun. He didn't even know sentient programs lived inside the Matrix. Meaning nothing remotely interesting happened to him.

Something Matrix could work, imho, but not Morpheus.

@consolitis
All Matrix characters are very boring on their own IMHO.

Therefor as i mentioned only a show with several known characters would work.

Or maybe do it similar like Fear the Walking Dead show: Do a show about how this all human-harvesting by the robots started.

But that was my point. All other (human) characters' lives intersect with Morpheus'. Of course he wouldn't be the only character. But he would be the lead because you would have to cast him anyway, because he is involved with everyone else.

I haven't seen the various TWD crap but Caprica, a show about how the Cylon-Human conflict came to be, was a disaster.

In any case, no TV series are planned for now so all our discussion is moot.

That story was originally planned to be told by the Wachowskis "in another medium", likely referring to a planned Animatrix short, or even a subplot in The Second Renaissance, but it never happened. (Although the very end of The Second Renaissance does hint to perhaps the first human that felt there was something wrong with the world, which might or might not be the first One).

edit Ah, found it, there are two different stories, both were planned for NOT the film medium:

1999 interview:

Quote:
There have been many questions about the history that Morpheus suggests in this scene, and we have written the history in a fair amount of detail, and we often have hoped that if we did an anime series, we would tell the story of this history and the story of the first One.

Quote:
Who unplugged Morpheus and told him about the matrix?

We hope to tell that story in another medium one day.

My problem with a Morpheus movie, is that a lot of exposition, that happened in the movies and now compose the more interesting parts of the universe, happened after Neo.

All the crazy characters and lore of the programs (their existence as well) came about only after Neo. Morpheus had no idea.

So if they want to respect continuity, then these are all out if the shows/movies/whatever are about Morpheus.

It just feels fucking forced.

Because the sequels weren't as well received, it's possible they will want to keep it Matrix-1-simple anyway, for the first film (of the many they hope to make). Meaning there's rebels, and there's agents, and that's all there is.

So a prequel could be a deliberate choice to "keep it simple", where Merv, his henchmen, the Architect, and so on, are unknown to the human characters and therefore nowhere to be seen, to be more in line with the first film, score nostalgia points and become a success.

And they could later re-introduce these aspects and characters in non-prequel films.

Not that I think it's necessary to use this approach, because we are not talking about fucking Jar Jar Binks here, to say "ok, we definitely don't want that thing in the relaunch of our franchise", but, eh, maybe they want to take things slow.

if they really want to do something amazing, just make a matrix movie with Benedict Cumberbatch and Idris Elba in it. the rest will sort itself out, and awesomeness will ensue.

"Screenwriter Zak Penn, who is reportedly in negotiations to write the new Matrix film, has spoken up on Twitter about plans for the upcoming film. He said that the film is not a reboot or remake. While he can't come right out and say that, at this point in time, he went on to mention films like Animatrix, as well as the growing X-Men Cinematic Universe with Deadpool and Logan. It seems as though the new Matrix film will be expanding the world instead of rebooting it."

Aside from the fact, that Zak Penn is very much in the meh category for me, this doesn't sound too bad.

Quote:
“I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved,” John Wick 3 director Chad Stahelski, who worked on the original trilogy, told Yahoo. “And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car.”

They followed up by asking if the Wachowskis were directing the new film. “I’m not sure of the overall,” Stahelski replied. “I’m not sure if Lana is.”

But they’re involved? “Yeah. And if they wanted help, I would absolutely put down whatever I was doing to help them.”

I see three possibilities of them endorsing it.

1) They are doing a "Cameron". Like, when Cameron said "oh, yeah, this film is great, it gets my approval" about Terminator Genisys because his friends, Arnie and Laeta, were making it? And when he regained the rights he more or less said "we are not making a sequel to any of those films but the first 2, because all the others sucked"?

Yeah.

2) Zak Penn has been shitcanned, and they are making something of their own.

3) Somehow, they legitimately liked Zak Penn's vision and are working together to make it happen. That would surprise me the most.

We'll see.

They go by "The Wachowskis" since 2012. And it's very doubtful they would be directing. They just put their workplace up for sale a few months ago. https://www.chicagobusiness.com/commercial-real-estate/matrix-filmmakers-listing-chicago-studio-building

They wouldn't do that if they had to helm a tent-pole film, with the tons of concept art, prep, and post, it requires.

Debunked: https://www.slashfilm.com/the-matrix-reboot-wachowskis-chad-stahelski/

Quote:
Update: A representative for Chad Stahelski has reached out and let us know that the initial report was inaccurate. His comments were in response to a hypothetical scenario were the Wachowskis would be involved and he did not confirm them being attached to the new film. Our original article follows below.

Well it would be great if they did the sequel to the first matrix.

Shame they never did the other movies after that one....

Even though the The Wachowskis won't be directing it, I still have high hopes for a proper modern reimagining with more verve and pathos than the fairly obsolete original concept. If the leaked images are anything to go by, I think it's gonna be another hit:

Not confirmed yet, but the Michael B. Jordan playing a young Morpheus prequel idea seems to be happening with Zak Penn and Lana Wachowski (directing) involved.
