I think it will be another Torment: Tides of Numenera. Not bad, just underwhelming, nostalgy factor and all.

Concerning the one thing BG3 needs, good writing and story. Is the one weakness of Larian as a studio.

I wish CDPR would develop a tactical RPG spinoff of Baldur's Gate with the Witcher 3 engine. I'd like to see Athkatla realised with the technology of TW3...

Main character plus up to 3 other party members, pausable battles from an overhead view.

But can they? Everything wrote by Larian in recent years has been below Baldur's Gate 2's storytelling.

So what not even Bioware itself can write like old Bioware anymore and there is no one else who could, writing in DOS2 was fine so i'm not too worried.

Sure thing! Troll Face

Eh, you guys sure know how to completely miss the point. DOS was a Larian game so it didn't attract big names. Baldur's Gate is a classic that is revered by pretty much every veteran in the industry. Larian will have the pick of the litter if they're making BG3 - loads of veteran writers would like to join in the project.

That's the only way to do it properly. But before we have any concrete information on the matter, I'll be skeptical, because DOS 1&2 are far from being storytelling masterpieces. In fact, I would argue that even their combat/character progression isn't all that amazing.

Why? This would be unfaithful to the previous game.

Well true but rtwp is an abomination that needs to die, it was just a failed attempt to make turn based combat less "boring" by automatizing large parts of it in real time to make it more accessible for the masses, turn based combat was and always will be far superior.

Have someone played Pillars 2 in both RTWP and turn-based mode? How much does TB mode prolong the game?

RTWP is great when you become too strong for trash mobs so you don't waste too many time in the entire TB "protocol". But for the hairy fights it essentially turns into TB, especially if you enable all auto-pause events in the options because of all the chaos on the screen.

why can't they just do turn based

that's probably the strongest point for DOS

because the story and the world are pretty forgettable

even with divine and beyond, getting into larian worlds / stories is hard for me because of how uninteresting they are

they also give off this lack of seriousness. i mean that's fine to lighten up the mood, but when your world itself seems like a joke, ehhhh

Having exactly the same problem with their games. I really, REALLY tried to get into Original Sin 2 but I just couldn't. Bought it on Steam, played it in different sessions, but decided to refund it, as the characters, the world and the narrative style didn't resonate with me.

BUT, it's a matter a taste, really. Smile That's why so many people are liking their games (OS and OS2 mainly).

I am a Pillars of Eternity style cRPG gamer, liking the more serious tones, but that doesn't meant anything, really. It's just - in the end - a matter of subjective taste.

I didn't really like the humor in D:OS either but never had that problem with DO:OS 2 and i still remember the characters very fondly similar to how i remember characters from BG 1&2 or PST. I dropped Pillars because it was boring as fuck to me (i actually even tried a second time but couldn't do it) and never even touched the second game so far.

I love Larian's humor and style of writing (I really do not think it's bad as some people said here, just a matter of it being a very different thing than what other studios do). My problems with Original Sin lie completely elsewhere.

I thought it was typical Belgian (probably French as well) humour, I like it since wel: Belgian... but its all about taste really. Although I wouldn't mind a bit of restraint on it because it can become a bit much if you're not in the mood for whimsical.

I do think the story telling itself is a bit too weak and sure it has some other problems here and there but nothing too big.

BG III, we'll see how it will turn out. It's not really a Larian project so I'll have to see which writers they bring on and such.

As to: kickstarter, doubt it. Its not Larians baby, so to speak.

Get some good story guy to pitch in, keep the same quality for dialogues and make things darker. Easy peasy for Larian.

Time to turn on the MCA signal. He's already doing Dying Light 2, the Jedi game, Bloodlines 2, System Shock and Alaloth, but BGIII would be the ultimate challenge for the ubiquitous writing superhero Very Happy

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.

So 5th ed, set after the Descent to Avernus campaign.

Vicke said in the Stadia interview that after DoS 1 they approached WoTC asking for the rights to make BG3, they were kinda denied, but before DoS 2 WoTC asked them if they still wanted to make it. Makes sense, DoS 1 was a success.

So far so good Smile

Swen was also asked about the combat/perspective but he didn't want to reveal anything yet. He did say though that their budget is substantial here, I wonder if that means a DA:O-like style instead of the classic isometric. We shall see I guess.
