Right now it could we be no longer than 10 hours. After adding some grind for gear, walking from A to B then to C and back to A, conversations and other "expanding" practices, they can say the main story is 100 hours.
And honestly every company becomes a menace after it reaches a certain level. EA used to be very nice with games like Battlefield, Black and White, the early C&C and FIFA games. Blizzard and Bethesda are on the same tracks and probably CDPR will follow them soon.

yes, they seemed like genuine nice guys in the start, but so did Bethesda and many others. Money and fame corrupts, people become assholes. If fortunate enough the games still remains good though.

And it's not like they're obligated to answer questions like that almost a year before launch - it's not a short period of time, many things can change (assuming they even actually release without delays, which I'm doubtful about).
Thing is, if they now said it's 200 hours long, and then gameplay time shortened, because they had to scrap some content due to it just not working right or there not being enough time to polish it up, people would rage because they lied. They say nothing, people get angry. They say something, people get angry. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. |
With as little as 10 months left it (should) be very close to finished, basically what's left in development at that stage is a LOT of balancing, tons of bug fixing, tweaks here and there, voice over work.. This is not a small project it's been in development for a LONG time, so 10 months is absolutely nothing for a huge project like this.
The problem with your argument is that they answered that question almost 1 year ago well, they didn't say how long it would take, just that you could finish the game if you wanted.
People don't get upset if they tell the truth e.g "we don't know" (completely acceptable) or "the game is not close to being finished" instead of "you can play it to the end already"). People also don't get upset if they don't lie about e.g graphical downgrades or using footage (of the old engine, which had better graphical fidelity) up until months before release (Witcher 3). Very scummy behavior. |
Actually, that's not really true, it varies wildly from company to company, and the period for testing / bug fixing is often a lot shorter than 10 months. But even assuming it's exactly like you wrote, some stuff can be thrown out precisely as part of the process you describe. Some stuff comes out precisely when you start to heavily test your game and play through it and it turns out it just wasn't fun or didn't work as you intended.
But the more important thing is that I doubt very much they have people there whose job is to play through the entire game with a clock in hand. It's a very different project to Witcher, which makes putting a number on it that much harder too. How long does it take you to finish a mission as a solo? How long as a netrunner? How much does it change from mission to mission? How about a pacifist playthrough? Half-pacisfist? How does it change when you chose thing "X" in mission "Y"?
Long story short, I can get getting salty because of donwgrades - nothing wrong about that. But this? They actually never said anything about the length of the game, other than it being "huge". You assume it's because they have something to hide (i.e. the game is not as big as people expect or it's not as close to being finished as they say). I think they just think like I do - that asking / answering questions like these is completely pointless in case of a game of this complexity, 10 months prior to launch.

I love that people are butthurt over cyberpunk's depiction this bullshit. Sure, lady has a boner - "oh I am not going to buy this game!, IT HURTS MY FEELINGS" !
lol fuck of. It's not baby playground. It's dark, cynical future. People are soft idiots and I hate current political correctness everywhere.

Oh ffs, who cares!? In 2019 we all know there are ladyboys and stuff, no need to be shocked or getting angry about it. In fact, getting all worked up over it is immature and stupid.

Why not listen to some of Mike Pondsmith's smooth tales instead of wasting time talking about that shit?! The interviews on the previous page were nice, could listen to that man talking for a long time, heh...

Then you did not listen.
Yong asked the CDPR representative how long it would take to finish the game if he only did the main quest, nothing else "no side missions". He got the reply that he couldn't tell because it's "too early in development" (=main quest is too early in development)

Since the CDPR representative here is the quest director he probably knows his stuff..

You are right and i was wrong. He says exactly that and I must have misheard that.
Still - let's judge it based on the released game. If the game will be post-poned i guess we will have confirmation that "game is finished start to end" might have been too early to say.
One might speculate that Reeves being in the game might have changed that - he joined a year ago. So maybe they had to change every moment with his character. The news of being able to play start to finish have appeared around august last year so who knows.

Well, if the main quest is not particularly long then he wouldn't admit it regardless. Think about it.

What i'm guessing: the main quest line is rather short so they're looking into how to prolong it, so they can't say how long it is.
Still curious that they said a year ago that it was playable from start to end.. Lots of things must have changed with the main quest, like it had to be recreate from almost scratch.

Even if the main quest is "playable", that could just mean they have conversations (or placeholders), quest states, scripting, etc. functional and in place. That doesn't mean the game actually resembles what it will end up like at release. I wouldn't get your panties in a twist just yet.

Is it? Because that would mean that 2/3 persons being negative is enough for people to form that view. Hence it be a bit idiotic.
That being said I can't blame people being negative/wary from the get go with how the game industry works.

This is my most anticipated game by far, i don't see how being wary of things you see and read is being overly pessimistic. It's just being realistic, which is often better than overhyping something or just being pessimistic for no reason.
