So I'm looking at buying a VR headset but not sure which ones would be good for what I want to do. I mainly want to use it for simulation games, like Elite, American/Euro Truck sim and DCS. Not sure about the FPS stuff. Do you have to be standing and walking if playing those?
I noticed the Vibe has those sensors to put behind you so I don't think I would have an area to do that where my desk is in my house (kind of crammed near the front door in a corner) so was looking as the Occulus Rift S. Thoughts/suggestions on types? I want to keep cost down so around $400-500.

lol, no you don't need to be walking to play a FPS.. sitting works fine. there might be a few that takes crouching into account perhaps or would just overall work a bit better overall if standing..

I love my Oculus Rift S. It's working great especially after the new update. I sold my CV1 and bought Rift S and I think it's night and day. Much clearer and a nice resolution bump. Tracking is great after the update. No external sensors. The sound is not good but I use QC 35 and it sounds awesome!

The Rift S still seems like a much better deal... I mean I've sold mine like I did with every vr headset but it's optics and screen were pretty good. Sweet spot was big, focal distance was close so I did not had to wear glasses, it was comfy, almost no screendoor effect, no godrays. The passthroguh was great too.
One thing for sure - S screen is fantastic and LCD was a great choice. My buddy still has old cv1 and it's so dim in comparison.
The sound on S had a great positional feel to it but just lacked any bass at all. It was fine but it was no cv1 which used koss drivers.
Now with index being 2.5x more expensive... and having worse sweet spot, worse god rays but better hands and optics... I don't think it's that big of a deal. All You do with hands is either hold a sword or a gun in all games and You can point finger on oculus too to press buttons.
At this point, the quest and index are the only headsets I did not owned/tried and the vr stuff on pc is so fucking broken most of time, I would go with the quest just to open the drawer, take quest out for a spin with some ass game and put it back in the drawer.
The Rift S oculus app is a nightmare. When it works.. it works great but it freezes often, it's heavy, it's slow and rift S burned down my usb 3 ports

I've read the same, i think it was also mentioned in one of the reviews i saw. This was around 2 months ago, don't really keep track of reviews or forum threads.
I got slightly curious again about Rift S.. started reading a bit.. i was directly disappointed to find posts like this:
"The Rift S FOV is a real disappointment compared to CV1. I have noticeably more black space on the left/right FOV in Rift S compared to the CV1. And I have the screen all the way back against my face and don't wear glasses when I play. It's very distracting and quite a down-grade from the CV1 FOV."
I thought the FOV was the biggest disappointment with CV1, the other things people complained about "god rays" and screen door didn't bother me the least.

That's not true. S has better colors, resolution, no screendoor, no god rays, no stupid trackers

I would say it got a little better Fov than CV1, at least it feels like it!

Fov seems bigger on S than CV1 to me. because lenses on S are much closer to eyes and it is adjustable now! The best point is shorter focus distance of lenses at about 1 meter and I dont have to wear glasses... I mean, I did not had to wear glasses when i still had S

Dusted off the vive again to see what's new and what has been updated.
Playing "moss", what a cool game. its a seated 3rd person adventure game where the player assumes both the character and a godlike role where you manipulate the world to navigate. Please do recommend any other games like this, really awesome.
Also will say installed the advanced options mod for Vive, really great for fine tuning your setup. I can turn this on now with perfect roomscale, floor height, chaperone on/off with a click.

ahh, ok. Yeah, not too much of an issue so far. I'll try it out in some games and see how it works.

The issue is that your eyes are too far away from the lenses due to the faceplate. First try to push the button below the headset and move it to its position closest to your face.
If that doesn't work you can actually remove the faceplate by pulling on it, that will put your eyes right up towards the lenses and remove all distortions along the edges. But removing it has a big negative which is you can now see the real world to your sides, and it's less comfortable.
If someone comes up with a less deep faceplate it might make it possible to get a good experience with big sweetspot, little blur while still being comfy.

Well, I was tempted to buy the Quest but Oculus being such giant cunts put me off so instead I got the Vive wireless adapter.
I'm curious to see how well it will perform and if I buy the Valve Index controllers, I can just keep the Vive headset - it's still excellent and I don't like having audio solutions on the headset itself - I prefer small in-ears which feel much cooler and lighter.

And me, I ordered a Rift S yesterday to replace (hopefully) my beloved 3 years old Rift CV1 ...
I can't believe I bought yet another Faceb... (Oculus) device
(For the record, I onwed Oculus DK1, DK2 and CV1)
But Valve Index pricing is way too high (especially if you have to buy the full package, HMD+controllers+light houses), what are they thinking ? ... We aren't in 2016 anymore
I know Index is the best out there, but the Rift S tracking system sounds really good and so better than having to put "cameras" in every corner, plus I will still be able to use my Oculus library.
Really a bummer they didn't use CV1 or Index double screen with adjustable IPD, and that they remove CV1 audio solution which turned to be rather good.
I will see how it goes with the fixed IPD thingy (I had to put the CV1 @70mm )
Finger crossed.
If it wont do it, I will return the Rift S in Oculus dev team's narrowed eyes faces and I may be considering a Valve Index later hoping for a bundle price drop...

PSVR isn't a bad route to go. I love my HTC Vive and was tempted to go Index, but ended up picking up a PSVR for Blood & Truth and AstroBot, both which are far more compelling than Valve's non-existent flagship games which still have no ETA, lol.

@Silent_Lurker let me know how the S works out for you. |
Hey sure.
So I got it for 3 days now and I wanted to wait like one or two weeks before giving my feedback but for now all I have to say is ...
Holly fucking shit !
The Rift S is so close to be a master piece for its price.
(Would have they kept CV1 IPD adjustement and built in audio.)
They really did a great job with tracking, I was afraid it would be a regression over external camera tracking but no, it works just flawlessly, with the lastest software update you can even touch the HMD or align controllers (ie. rifle aiming situation) and no issue at all.
I never thought "mobile HMD development" would benefit such a technical upgrade, I was disappointed back then when they didn't put priority on a Oculus 2 release, but now I have to admit they did the things right.
So about lack of IPD adjustment thingy :
You can read anything on the Internet about this, being it good, bad, terrible, a no go.
I think the reason is because ... it depends on your very personnal morphology.
I have around 70mm IPD and at first it felt to me like the first time a tried the PSVR, quite nice picture, no much glare like my CV1 has but I had hard time focusing on things which were a little blurry (after some software IPD adjustement on PS4 software it went better though).
Here on the Rift S, software IPD adjustment seems just useless in my case, I didn't get any difference from 63.5 to 72 (but 63.5 to 58 did make picture quality worse for me).
It is bearable in my case , thanks to better lenses and wider sweat spots, but it is still bothering when you now picture could look better.
And this is clearly a lack of physical IPD adjustment issue as if I close one eye and adjust the HMD and then switch eye I have to slide (a very little) the HMD to have perfect picture on this other eye.
What help me here :
My glasses !
This is another good point of the Rift S : you can actually wear your glasses (if you have to wear some) and I don't know why but IPD issue is just fixed (for me) when I wear my glasses picture is cristal clear without effort and I am an happy dog right now.
So my thoughts for now on the Rift S :
Pros :
- Flawless tracking
- no more external cameras and whatever needed
- possibility to wear glasses (for real this time)
- better resolution + better lenses really makes a difference over CV1
- LCD screen really helped reducing screen door effect
- PSVR head mounting style is easier to adjust
- pass-trough view system is handy
- quality / price ratio
Cons :
- No IPD adjustment can be a problem for some (you have to try it to be sure)
- built in audio quality, Rift CV1 built in audio was way better ...
- ... so you have to fiddle with your own audio headset for some serious gaming
- limited FOV (you still feel like wearing a scuba mask, no biggie though)
- a strap (like on Valve Knuckles) would have been better on the new Touch controllers
Finally, in my case the Rift S will perfectly replace my good old (3 years all ready) CV1 as it gives me a big upgrade when playing DCS : World for example, where I can now clearly read any flight instrument even without zooming or tweaking any super scaling at all and tracking for a sitting experience is now flawless (no more deadzones).
But again, I think you have to try it first if you aren't an IPD standard being
They offer free return so
That's it for now hopes it helps
