Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss reunite the Sherlock team for a remake of Dracula

Quote:
Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are due to begin work on a series of BBC specials based on the classic 1897 novel by Bram Stoker in which the bloodthirsty count moves from Transylvania to England.

The Corporation is finalising talks with the pair and is poised to green-light the project which is likely to air in 2019.

The new Dracula series has not yet been written and Gatiss and Moffat will begin working on the scripts once they have both completed their own solo projects – details of which have not been confirmed.

Sherlock producer – and Moffat's wife – Sue Vertue will produce Dracula for Sherlock production house Hartswood Films.

“It’s early days and the BBC has not seen a script yet but they are close to signing a deal for a series of 90-minute films of Dracula,” said a senior production source.

“It’s not yet been decided if it will be historical or modern day or if there will be a US co-producer but the BBC are keen on this and it will happen. What needs to be decided is how many episodes – whether there are three or five or six or whatever but they will definitely be 90-minute films.

"Production is at least a year away so it will probably be on screen in 2019 at the earliest.”

Dracula will be the first collaboration between Moffat and Gatiss since the last Sherlock episode aired in January – and the pair have made no secret of their desire to work together again.

Hopefully it will be much better than NBC's Dracula. It was really bad.

Another thing..I like the novel but Stoker's Dracula is a pretty one-dimensional and boring villain, so I hope it will be based on Coppola's film which is a masterpiece.

If it was me making a Dracula TV series I would dedicate the first episodes to the real Vlad Tepes, a Transylvanian hero, and add as little supernatural elements as possible, and the rest of the episodes would be based on the Stoker's novel or rather Coppola's film.

PS Steven Moffat's "Jekyll" was really good. Watch it if you haven't already.

Since you mentioned Moffat and Jekyll -

If you have 2 hours to kill. Laughing

I liked Jekyll and Sherlock, but there was something I couldn't explain, until I came across this video which does a good job explaining what I couldn't express.

TL;DR If Moffat is involved don't get too excited.

@EyePatchLives

They should only make limited tv shows. Like Jekyll. Then their writing seem to work just fine. Very Happy

I haven't finished watching Sherlock. It got boring. The should have stopped after the first season finale.

It can't be worse than NBC's Dracula. This alone makes me excited Laughing

Moffcula? Laughing

Sounds like a bad idea, TBH. I liked Sherlock for a while, but it became a total clusterfuck later on. I don't have any faith in Moffat being able to pull Dracula off in a semi-decent way.

Yeah, I'm not keen on this idea either, not after Sherlock became a ridiculous parody of itself with Shyamadingdong-inspired twists, improbable love affairs and snarky personas Sad Laughing

Just make it a limited TV series.

2 seasons tops.

The first season should tell us about Vlad Tepes's story based on the history books with just minor supernatural elements here and there.

The second season should be based on the Coppola's film (not the novel).

@EyePatchLives

What's so funny? Very Happy

He was terrific in this role and the film itself is an immortal classic. It aged so fucking well, like The Interview with a vampire. The only thing that sucks about the film is Keanu "I'm an emotionless cyborg" Reeves lol

I watched a shitload of Dracula films starting from the ancient Nosferatu directed by F. W. Murnau.

I think stories, where Super Evil villains (c)(tm) need to be put down by valiant knights in shining armor (like the original novel), are too black and white.

In fact, Stoker's Dracula was pretty shitty as a villain. He was a one-dimensional and kinda boring character.

I gotta say though, Coppola's Dracula was not the first film where they tried to make him a bit more interesting than your average "I'm-the-Grrrreat-Evil-and-the-scourge-of-all-humanity-mwahahaha" shithead. Laughing

I agree, Copolla's Dracula was the one adaptation I've liked the most so far.

Curious how they will tackle the subject. Being from the land of the blood thirsty so called vampire, i'm skeptic.

Also, whenever I travel abroad and this subject comes up ( quite often ), I like to show people my neck for them to see there are no bite marks Reaction

Uhm.. It's a three-part miniseries similar to The War Of The Worlds, not a seasonal show.

"Dracula (TV Mini-Series) (creator - 3 episodes)".

And yeah, Coppola's Dracula was good. I do like the old campy Christopher Lee movies (the first three, then they went turkey) as well as the Roman Polanski parody "Dance of the Vampires". He actually managed to get the atmosphere right even though it was ultimately a comedy (with a very purty Sharon Tate in the bath scene; may cancer and alzheimers strike the surviving murderers).
