Yeah batman failing to stop a 60yo joker would sure make an interesting movie.

Joaquin is 44, dude. He is just a very good actor and looks broken down and decrepit in this movie ... he could do the Hollywood "buff up and become a badass" routine if they wanted a skull-bashing Joker as a villain against proto-Batman.

I think he meant in the timeline of the movie. If the kid in the trailer is indeed Bruce Wayne, Joker will be a weak old man once he becomes the Batman.

Burton showed us a little bit of Jack Napier and how he become Joker, but there was still a lot left for us to not know about him.

Same thing applies to (for instance) Hannibal Lecter. Not knowing how and why he became this monster is what made him so great in Silence of the Lambs. But of course Hollywood had to make 200 different versions explaining what exactly made him become what he was. Especially in the dreadful Hannibal Rising.

So, hopefully, this won't be another Hannibal Rising, but the teaser does indeed look very meh.

Regarding Lecter, the origin story is actually a book by the original author (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hannibal_Rising). It is regarded as the weakest in the series, and suffers from all the issues you mentioned, but it's not Hollywood.

Wasn't he pressured by Hollywood to write it, so they could make it into a movie?

I don’t think pressure is the right word. I think the monetary incentive is what drove him to do it, because of the success of the other films.

Is this movie even set in the Batman universe? Looks like a nice movie about a guy who wants to be a clown and going slowly insane, but Joker needs Batman. (a cameo of some kid called Bruce ain't gonna cut it)
Or are they keeping this a secret? I mean, who else is going to stop him?

Nope, has nothing to do with Batman (bar the kid etc.) Seems it's a standalone take on the character.

Looks positively intriguing Smile
The love story feels a bit forced and unnecessary, but whatever.

This kinda bothers me too, but if the movie is "meaty" enough on its own, it's not really important to me. The trailer piked my interest enough for me to forget about Batman Very Happy
As for your final question, I suspect this Joker won't end well by the end of this movie. Razz

The movie's getting surprisingly RAVE early reviews. As in, Dark Knight level of universal acclaim, great as a movie, not just a comic book flick.

This addresses a couple of complaints the fans had with pre-release info: https://www.vitalthrills.com/2019/08/31/joker-review-joaquin-phoenix-astounds/

Quote:
Joaquin Phoenix is astounding as Arthur Fleck/Joker. Yes, that’s a big word, but it’s the first thing that came to mind after my inadvertent exclamation. Before I go into the Joker review though, I do want to address one thing. Fans freaked out when a misquote from director Todd Phillips came out saying he wasn’t basing this on the comics. It is based on the comics. It’s just not based on a single comic story. You can breathe now. Though the narrative doesn’t rely heavily on a specific plotline, it’s tied in enough to the character we know and love to hate that comic fans aren’t likely to have any issue here. I won’t say more, because you definitely don’t want to get spoiled. This is a character study, though, so what we see of the larger world of Gotham is less important than what we see of Arthur and his journey into madness/who he really is.

Another issue fans were having was the fact that the Joker really doesn’t have an origin story. He certainly tells some to us, but we can’t trust him. He’s an unreliable narrator, as it were. The same is true here. Yes, we get a story, but since this tale is from the Joker’s point of view, we can’t completely trust what we’re seeing. That’s not a reach on my part. It’s very clear in the film that we can’t. It’s also very clear why that is. It’s a master class in directing from Phillips, letting us study a character in such an in-depth way, all the while knowing that that character can only tell us so much. You’ll understand more about why this being an origin story works by the end of the film.

Quote:
Again, this is a difficult film to watch, and it’s going to take time to process, but ultimately, I think this is going to be a definitive part of Joker canon. I can’t finish without comparing this performance to Heath Ledger’s in The Dark Knight, of course. I believe that both performances are brilliant, and this takes nothing away from the work Ledger did. These are different versions of the Joker, and both can exist side by side as incredible interpretations.

JOKER REVIEW RATING: 10/10

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

Anyway I trust the Phoenix to deliver, even if the movie itself isn't that good, similarly to Nicholson and The Shining.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/08/31/joker-movie-review

Quote:
Phillips (along with co-screenwriter Scott Silver) designed a film that demands multiple viewings; one of Joker’s strengths is that anyone will be able to argue their side about what was real and what was imagined, and no one will be able to say another’s read of it is inaccurate. For a movie about one of fiction’s most unreliable narrators, we should expect nothing less.

Corroborates what the woman above said. Should make fans of the character happy.

P.S Also rated 10/10 Very Happy

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
