Well, he is a solo dev who tried very hard to make the game for the past 3 years. Would be retarded if he risked it all for some fast cash from Epic and ruining his reputation (that's still to be earned) and screw over his future games.
Just blind purchased this. Disgusting that Epic won't even sell the game if it isn't exclusive to their store.
STFU they are saving pc gaming

Props to the developer for not signing the pact with the Sweenevil, the main concept based on shifting the perspective works and some of the mini-contraptions are quite clever. The stealth encounters are mechanically very simplistic but the logic behind the puzzles is as weird as it is strangely reasonable, the result is pretty unique. Really wish it lasted longer though, after about one hour it was already time to see the rolling credits and leave the creepy Q™
Edit:
We have two threads about this, but since the Humps cannot into merging things and it's too late now I guess we can keep using this one

Dang, I swear I've searched before posting, I usually do the check. Dunno why hasn't come up, probably that bad query thing again.
Don't worry, the search function has the ability to make stuff disappear like some quantum-powered black hole only to regurgitate it later when one doesn't need it anymore. Been like this since forever, it's part of the vintage Hump experience
Darq is 16.79 and you forgot Steam's cut and taxes. However, I doubt Epic would have paid more than 100k for this title. It didn't sell bad considering is a short adventure game and the developer has more to gain in the long run. Darq is also available on GOG.
> approx. 20k sales after 10 days since release
Uh-oh. Should have went with Epic deal
Based on what,
His game:
> was in top 50 wishlists of 2019 on Steam
> had 13k followers at the moment of a release
> had impressive media coverage on multiple old-school videogame media (just one example - https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/game/darq/)
> got insane amount of "good dev" bonus points among the crowd of Steam Autists due to how well (in terms of PR) he handled Epic exclusive thing and how well he managed to capitalize on it
And yet, after all of this, in first 2 weeks he barely got 20k copies sold (and that's just top number SteamSpy assumes, it never is the top number, just assumed max)
So yes, I consider this a very poor performance. Without much of a trouble you could look back and find indie games that had way less favorable situation at the moment of a release and still amassed more sales in 2 weeks.
It just proves the point I mentioned before - the audience of "educated consumer" who cries on the Internet about bad Epic is laughable small. These "bonus points" for "doing the right thing" gave him 0 benefit. As for the normie consumer that is 99% of Steam store it seems like his game isnt such a hot shit anymore among the sheep, so having 100-200k in sales via exclusivity would be WAY better.
But of course, I'm judging in retrospect now. Having what he had at the hands I would risk and go for the Steam gabmle as well, it just as we can see now the gamble wasnt really good.

what do they pay indies with games this small? What was the figure going to be? He didn't know, he never made it that far.
We have some info from the Samurai Shodown (~up to 10mil) director and the Phoenix Point project lead (just above 2mil) and so far people have worked out educated guesses how much Epic is ready to pay for AAA exclusivity and how much for an indie.
If media coverage is a positive point, the above would have propelled the awareness of his game into the stratosphere.
Why are you focusing only on this? It wasnt my the only point, it was part of the complex argument and it the least important part of it. Still, it adds it weight to the bigger picture I was making. There is never only 1 PR/coverage factor out there that dictates sales and/or popularity. And DARQ clearly lack the latter despite scoring a lot of points across all fronts.

Once again you base everything on guesswork
Oh look, its this """"""""argument""""""""" again. Cant teach old dog new tricks?
You dont have an excel spreadsheet with all the numbers straight off the publisher/partners page so how about you shut up
Yeah, sure, did you hear guys? Clearly you cant even talk about that aspect of the game industry at all until you've all got all the inside info. Otherwise you are an arrogant pricks who DARES to exercise an educated guess. Or work with the minimal stuff you've got. "Wait, what did you say? Oh, you can't possibly have said information? Well, my friend, that's exactly why you shut your god damn mouth."
I'm not gonna challenge your argument or your points, I'm just gonna downplay your position, move goalposts and then also throw in ad hominen so you know better than challenge MY opinion around here! Boy I do love a good talk with an educated, well-spoken, reasonable adult.

Literally NOBODY talked about dev's morale compass or dragged that unrelated point into the discussion but you. Aren't you even slightly embarrassed by your goalposts moving because you have zero arguments?
