Check the official forums if you haven't yet. The map is MUCH larger now - only about 1/5 left to unlock. It's completely open, you can go anywhere you want, the only condition being that you have to be strong enough to survive getting there. It's supposed to come out of EA next year. Here's a link to the official roadmap: https://lofigames.com/road-map/

ah Kenshi, one of my go to games, I really like it, but it's a 'forever EA'.
The performance issues are horrible (you can get it run quite fine if you tune the draw distances to minimum), and it's developing quite slowly.
I'm waiting for some proper ranged combat (maybe they have added already? played last about... half a year ago).
I love the city building aspect in it, and the initial challenges (you have to run away from everything).
Maybe it's time for another try

You are not the chosen one. You’re not great and powerful. You don’t have more ‘hit points’ than everyone else, and you are not special. Unless you work for it. Full release coming on December 6th
they spent like 5 or more years on the kenshi engine, now they are just going to ditch it and rewrite on unreal? good luck with that.
Well, they were planning to rework their own engine also. Thus, they probably realized, it's faster to rework assets etc. for Unreal engine, than rewriting their own engine from (basically) scratch.

It's not his engine it's running on OGRE engine.. but yes he has spent a lot of time on incorporating his specific mechanics into it. When i worked on it he created e.g a random generator for grass, trees, rocks which took quite a while to get right. He had already worked on the game / engine for MANY years when i helped out. So 5 years is not nearly enough.
Not really a fan of this engine, what's good is better modding support though..
