Basically I have VNC server installed at home on my pc and I use the viewer from the work pc to access it but just lately I have been unable to connect and its goddamn annoying. I now need desperately to access my home pc. Is there any way I can connect to it without installing something on it first? I know my IP!

I have tried logmein but it needs to be installed on the remote pc I believe which is no good in my current situation.

VNC is great .

Windows xp pro already have a remote feature , you just need to turn it on in the panal control .

Dont forget , you need to create a user and password on the computer you want to control

My dilemma is I cant access the PC I want to control from here but I know its IP address. I tried pinging my IP from work and it doesnt work so I tried the traceroute command (tracert) and it gets to my ISP but times out before it reaches the destination which suggests it might not be my VNC server that is at fault!

Sound like the pc you try to reach is behind a firewall .

If the pc is connected to a router , you need to do a port forward .
If its just a firewall , than you need to open ports .

See VNC site to know what port you need to open or forward because i dont know .
Im using VNC in a LAN .

If you dont know how to :
http://www.portforward.com/
btw VNC is maybe on the list .

I already set up port forwarding on my router for VNC. It has been working for about a year I would say! Maybe I will try an alternative port but theres nothing I can do about it until I get home. :/

Did you gave a ip to the computer or you let the router gave one?
If you dint , the router may give a new ip sometimes to the computer .

You need to give an ip to the computer you try to connect . Dont let the router give one .

i give 192.168.0.1 to the router
i give 192.168.0.2 to the first computer
192.168.0.3 to the next and so .

you sure you have your outside network IP?
you can get your outside IP for example with a website such as http://www.whatismyip.com/
is your password very long?
if your pings won't get returned, it could be that your firewall is just blocking any return
vnc standard limits passwords to 8 letters
thightvnc (the best implementation to my knowledge) began to enforce it only with the last release a year or so ago
i wasn't at first aware of this, and wondered why the hell i couldn't connect until i read about it - i truncated my connection password to 8 letters and it works like a charm

i don't know your tech knowledgelevel so i'm sorry if i sound patronising

Im not that technoknowledgable but I know more than most but not as much as others lol. My password is 7 characters. What I cant understand is it has been working solid for a good year and suddenly it stops. I havent changed anything whatsoever. I will wait till I get home and then mess about with it until it works! I have 3 other machines connected to my network so I can use those to test it.

OMG after 5 hours of forwarding ports, checking to make sure they are listening, checking firewall settings and looking for possiblle malicious blocking programs, I have got the blasted thing functioning! Ive uninstalled and reinstalled VNC several times but after going through the registry as well and removing everything related, of which there were quite a lot and then rebooting, reinstalling the server, it works once more! lol I still cant believe it! Very Happy
