It seems just like watching a movie, where you have to put in effort. Sort of like watching a movie with the TVs power hooked to a stationary bike you have to pedal to keep it on, and the creator tells you you have to "As its part of the movie's experience".
99% about the story 1% about game play, but 99% about tediously and frustratingly wasting time to get 1% more of the story to progress. |
But that's not universally true, I ve been playing for 80 hours now, and got done with the story around the 60 hour mark. The gameplay is just different and addictive to me, I can't really compare it to any other game. Some may find it boring and some exciting, it depends on what you look for in a game. I for one am fed up of the 10000th shooter or cookie cutter RPG and this is just very refreshing from a gameplay perspective. But as usual for the hump, someone posts a negative video about something and everyone start lulzzdurffing and circlejerking. Anyone who claims the opposite or finds value in it, is called a fanboy or derp and showered with Leo-style.
Ah well, the hump is the hump, pretty much the other side of the resetera coin, you have to find the relative truth somewhere in the middle.

I honestly think its on my shoulders why I personally cannot find it a game I want to play, and maybe less that it seems a bad game overall in and of itself.
I don't play games for the story, at all. I'm the guy that's spamming space bar trying to get cut scenes and NPC dialog to skip. And since this game's mechanics is all about the amount of effort you put in paying off by getting another part of the story has no value to me.
The majority of games I play are turn your brain off shooters with friends, or singleplayer is games like planet coaster, racing sims, cities skylines, factorio, rimworld..etc. ZERO story to have to sit through..lol
So to me it seem a mix of: OK I dont get to relax and just enjoy a movie, nor do I get game play that is compelling or enjoyable to do so I can see the movie.
I think my problem with it is the gameplay seems so tediously monotonous, just 100 hours of slooow fetch quests (to me), that the bulk of what makes a story 'game' a 'game' and not just a story..is missing being enjoyable.

But the gameplay itself is rewarding, if it clicks for you, which it may or may not. most people I know who enjoyed it, did so despite the story and not because of it. The progression within the gameplay, unlocking new stuff constantly and getting new mechanics/tools introduced steadily is what hooks you. The story was ok at the end when things were cleared up, it was definitely better than the weak sum of it's parts throughout the game, but during the initial 60 hours of gameplay I didn't care about it much to be honest. After the 2 hour cutscene barrage at the end of the game was finished, I was happy to get back to gameplay again in the post-game chapter.

It might just be my perspective off the videos I've seen, and what types of games I can get sucked into.
It looks what what would be a $5.99 game on steam about testing just how much sheer persistence you have, wrapped in a AAA title engine. Like if steam had a "Drunk walking simulator 2020" then they added 80 hours of dialog with NPC's, and musical soundtrack to it.
Again it might just be my pet peeves in games. I can spend 8 hours tweaking a part of my city in skylines, or setting up and theme one area in planet coaster. BUT make me walk 15 minutes in a video game..and I'm like "This game sucks, this is just timesink for the sake of it"..So its an epitome what drives me crazy in RPG games as its main game mechanic

The drunken walking simulator was the initial few hours of the game for me, after the tutorial chapter you get plenty options, trucks with alot of cargo space, bikes, you can build a road around the map or a network of ziplines across the mountain area to make traversal alot easier. There are enemies out for your cargo, you can sneak into their bases and loot everything, kill them, stun them or just steal one of their vehicles and get away. Hiking in the mountains and trying to climb the highest peaks, then leaving down ropes to make it easier for other players just never gets boring to me, each hike is different.
It has way more elements than the "drunken walking" and constant unlocking of new tools, upgrades etc. Then there is the asynchronous multiplayer aspect which adds a whole new layer to the game, it's basically Dark Souls' multiplayer but heavily expanded, rewarding cooperation among players. The combat is piss-easy even on hard, except for a few enemy bases later on, but the game doesn't handhold you, it tells you what to deliver and where, plotting a viable route and getting there is your own task.

It's just a simple case of "to each their own". Nothing wrong with that. Until i played games like MGS (can't really decide which one exactly, 2 i guess?), Witcher 3 or more of an adventure game (aka walking sim) like SOMA i also wasn't really interested in the story. I wanted to mash the buttons, finish off the boss, feel like a badass. Whether it's because of defeating that huge boss or because the games is tough as fucking nails. Again - nothing wrong with that. It just changed for me. I want more games like Last Of Us or Death Stranding now.
And i also enjoy Cities: Skylines, good time-waster. Or playing with the inventory in Resident Evil 4

Basically +1. Negativity is always the cool thing here. DS actually touches base on that, since all the feedback to other playes you can give is positive. That's also one of those things that i like about it.
Of course there are those that put fucking signs everywhere or whore for likes. Signs can be turned off (although i didn't ultimately for my first playthrough) but whoring for likes could be countered with a limit or sth.
I tried playing SW Fallen Order multiple times for a few days now. Arrived at the frog, ultimately beaten him and stopped. Same old shit, but the worst thing is - it's all been done. It's not about the boredom, it's copying the mechanics that bothers me. The "teen-rated" factors in as well. Jesus.
Still, maybe the lack of games to play will make me try again.

Totally opposite effect for me from the same thing. I use to play the hell out of RPGs and MGS type games. But as I got older I started to tire of them and want more open ended, free form, storyless game of creativity and problem solving.

That's not a bad comparison, it does feel like a weird simulator.

BTW, I've been wrong before about games looking unappealing. Until I have it running on the PC to try, it's all based on videos. I guess, first and foremost, what is repelling me is Kojima/japcrap type storytelling. There is a certain odor to all his games.

And i can't fucking agree more! All those dumbass shoveled-in literal names of characters (most of them at least), piss and poop juvenile humor, fourth-wall breaking excess. Add to that the storytelling way that many people hate.
Simply - i grew to like it. Not because it is perfect and no one can say it is not, but because it is different. Kojima is a fucking egomaniac, can anyone deny that? All those "by Hideo Kojima" phrases in the games, ads and everywhere else.
He has a direction he goes and there is consequence in this. DS was his "balls of steel" moment because he had to know that many people will hate the game for the gameplay + his storytelling on top of that. And there is no Konami to take care of him now (although Sony has got his back i guess).
So, his hamfisted and "overexpositioned" storytelling and dialogue are a turn-on for me and a turn-off for you. And that's it
EDIT: Also i feel something of an "odor" to (almost) all JRPG or anime games. Same goes for many of the pixel platformers that destroy platformers for me. And i grew on Prince Of Persia 1, Blackthorne and all that jazz. I don't really know why but i just can't get over it and try them.
----
Lately i heard that Kojima is know to be an asshole to journalists which interested me. I never saw him leave an interview or anything. I'm curious to see that. Can anyone recall any stories like that?

For sure. There is a reason I call them japcraps. Every so often, there is a game that transcends the japcrap "odor", such as Zelda Breath of the Wild, but those are very few and far between.
But PoP has nothing to do with japcrapRPG?

You can play BotW on CEMU at 4K. Far better experience than Switch.

Crap, didn't know that. Is that a playable state or is it like a 100% working one?

Shocker! It's not like Geoff Keighley and Kojima are good friends.
