I think they took the wrong approach.
So many people wanted a HL game for so long, making it VR only is an odd choice.
They should have went the HL game with VR option I think myself. Release the game as a normal game with a VR option.
Like Xplane, or Project Cars, or such. You dont NEED VR to play it. But its waaaay more fun if you can because it is built to support that as an option.

And 3 people would buy it for VR like that instead of what's currently happening:

Rift S or Quest with Link have the best price/performance for most people. Index is only for enthusiasts.

so with a pricetag of 450 bucks (say 400 if you find a deal at some point) i fail to understand how the price of admission here is disproportionately higher as say buying a new console (as ppl have been raising this argument) ... but i dont want to fuel the flames --just wondering
There will be more deals next week (Black Friday).

Making HLVR pancake compatible is literally the worst thing Valve could have done. You'd end up with a game that was compromised as both a 2D game and as a VR game. We already have enough 2D games with VR bolted on (Half-Life 2 VR with the Razer Hydras, DOOM 3: BFG Edition VR, Alien: Isolation VR, Skyrim VR, Fallout 4 VR, Resident Evil 7 VR) and all you end up with are games that have too many limitations from their native 2D compatible mechanics to be true flagship VR titles, despite showing lots of promise for how powerful VR can be. One of the most impressive VR tech demos right now --- The Lab --- wouldn't even make sense to play on a flat screen due to how its VR mechanics work.
Moving forward, Valve, Respawn, Stress Level Zero are taking the right approach with HLVR, Medal of Honor, and Boneworks by building VR games FOR VR. It's time to move forward again with technology and leave pancake screens behind (at least for certain types of games), same as we did 56k, CDs, and floppy disks.
This takes me back. I played HL2 originally at the release day on Radeon 9600, I think it was 9600SE, it has 128VRAM. Shit was super-slow in-game but mostly because I was CPU limited, had shitty Celeron.
Im on the same page @Ashok0.
I mean I got an original vive, an oculus, and vive index here in my house. I'm not anti-VR movement at all
I'm guess the middle ground would be moving into it with a less controversial game option? I was offering an olive brach with my comment, that now I agree with you..probably end up a 1/2 assed HL game for all trying to do it that way.
Maybe it's HL was a bad choice for the first step of valve doing a full AAA VR title? People as a whole have been waiting for some HL game for way too long I think for it to be a good choice.
Perhaps a better timeline of releases would have been better. A proper HL3 to please those waiting for years..then a separate HL story arc that is VR only after?

As this is not HL3, those that can't or don't want to invest in VR can skip it. People are being a little too dramatic about being "forced".
Mind you, Laidlaw released his outline for Ep3 2 years ago for everyone to read, which can help provide some temporary closure.
We'll see what format HL3 will have, but this is consciously not HL3.
HL3 could have two different campaigns. Ep3, the conclusion to the HL2 episodic saga starring Gordon Freeman, and a VR side-game from the perspective of some character (e.g. again Alyx), the same way Portal 2 had a SP campaign, and a co-op campaign. This way it can give something to everyone and not compromise either campaign.

He's complaining the game is exclusive to Valve Index - when it's literally the opposite of that, it's compatible with every PC VR headset released in recent years. Meanwhile, Borderlands 3 IS exclusive to EGS, but that's somehow ok in his mind

i u are smart u will buy a vr after people finished the game in like 6 hours (not counting the 10 hours u are toiletdiving and rearranging groseries, looking for bullets) and want to get some money back before the whole vr market collapses as everyone wants to recoup the 1000 usd they wasted on a stupid impulse buy rofl
the great vr crash of 2020, hopefully burry it once and for all next to bitcoin in the same stinking hole, ill have burito king write a nice eulogy, he does anything for money

I haven't read the whole thread yet. If you say it's compatible for every "PC VR headset", is there a chance it will also support PSVR (potentially through 3rd party software)?

Randy really should have learned by now to keep his stupid cunt mouth because there's never anything intelligent coming out, he only embarrasses himself again and again.
He's only assuming its like that because it's a no-brainer to him to make it exclusive.

PSVR is not natively supported on PC so I don't know. There are ways to get it to work apparently with SteamVR, so it could work, but eh... Unofficial support could break at any moment, or might not be ideal? I wouldn't recommend it.
The supported headsets are these: https://www.half-life.com/en/alyx/vr
These are almost all the consumer oriented headsets right now in the market (the Windows Mixed Reality is a whole category that includes a bunch of them)
Now, the list is missing some like the Pimax, but it's a safe assumption that every SteamVR compatible headset will work.
From everything that I've heard the game has been extensively playtested to hell and back to provide the smoothest VR experience possible in all sorts of headsets and prove to the public VR can be a worthwhile experience.
Will Half-Life’s return be exclusive to VR? To Steam VR? To Valve Index?
Half-Life: Alyx is exclusive to VR, but not to Valve Index. We continue to believe strongly in the open PC platform, and it is our intention that Half-Life: Alyx is playable on any VR headset that connects to a gaming PC capable of running the game. If you have an HTC Vive, an Oculus Rift (or Quest with the Link cable), a Windows Mixed Reality headset — just to name a few — you can play Half-Life: Alyx. We put a lot of effort into making Valve Index the highest-fidelity VR solution on the market, and we think it’s a great way to play the game, but it’s absolutely not required.
Yeah, like he says it's playable on all PC VR headsets, and the ones in that list are just some explicitly mentioned, but there are more. So the Pimax should work fine.
