Amazon shipping and tariffs will probably make it even more expensive than buying it locally. I don't want to spend that kind of money on VR at any rate. If I had more disposable income I might get into that kind of toys but I fear I'd get bored after a few weeks/months.
Nope on the Amazon shipping. It's GBP 11.49 to ship, not ~150 euros as you might have thought

It does look like the Index is the best one to go for for picture quality, and lets face it, the eye candy has to be good. It's a hard decision to make in the end...

I really prefer Vive Pro over Index for "picture quality", Valve's LCD displays just can't compete with AMOLED. That being said, Index really shines with that 135 degree FOV and voodoo speakers that don't touch your ears. All comes down to personal preference.
Colors and contrast are better on OLED indeed, but the technology comes with its own shortcomings.
But in motion there's 144 Hz on the Index vs 72-90 Hz on others (including Vive Pro) too to take into account

I was skeptical having owned dk1,2 and cv1 but LCD on Rift S blows those out of the water. On OLED, black smudged a lot and had these weird green dots (moira effect?). So the best use was to disable the totally black effect on cv1 which was pointless it being oled.
On Rift S LCD, the picture is much more uniform, brighter and pixels have more filling square RGB layout. I do not want to go back to quest oled...
so if Alyx will be the next coming of christ, I will have to buy Rift S again

why did u sell it in first place ? , also keep in mind, even if the game is a hit, ur waiting 2-3+ more years for other publishers to catch up and make their vr games, meaning a whole new generation of vr is out again by that time , possibly 4k if next gen consoles can pull it off
I buy every headset, toy with it for a month, see that there are no interesting games, see that it's sweaty as always and uncomfortable and then sell it
So hype buy / realistic sell

Also OLED are also pentile panels, so you throw out of the window some of its resolution.
Here's a video comparing Rift S (LCD) vs Quest (OLED) with Link, two pretty similar devices otherwise:
Does the OLED (top) have better colors and contrast than the LCD (bottom)? Yes. But say hello to SDE, which is much harder to spot on the LCD panel (I don't see any in this screenshot in fact).

One thing about the Rift S I like is the fact that no sensors have to be mounted in the room, that's a big bonus. I really hope it is a success for Valve to be honest. I want a VR version of L4D !!

I dunno, is it? Didn't read any reviews or anything.
I only know the display is quite good and it looks like it uses the same mechanism as the PSVR which is perhaps the most comfortable headset I ever used.
Likot Mosuskekim, Woodcutter cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Elephant.
Rift S is shit in exhibition usage, it forgets play area like 10 times in a day, its very sensitive to lightning and other people, shame, its amazing otherwise.
Lol no. In just 3 months? I don't think so. Right now the company is investing big into the Quest, because it's been selling well for them. They will release their own PC cable in the near future and also bring some finger tracking to it. Carmack is also working on maxing out the quality of the video signal when using the cable. They won't release these updates and render them useless at the same time by announcing a new headset.
Unless one wants to wait until then, now is a good time as any to jump in.

He said exhibition usage. I have no idea what that's supposed to mean. Does he want to use it in trades?

Well luckily there are other companies than Oculus
Also didn't Carmack step down as CTO and only remained in a consulting position?
Pretty sure he is working on some AI stuff.
He tweeted couple of days ago:
"I am hoping to add a new mode that takes full advantage of USB3.1 bandwidth, but that would be months out before it could hit users."
"I have a couple plans to work around it. Note that the current versions isn’t at the 835 limit, we reduced the resolution for better encoder compatibility on the pc side. That will be going back up as we get more data."
And other companies are not competing on that price range. WMR are not as reliable tracking wise, Valve is doing high end, and the rest are expensive, not great support, niche, etc. Eg targeting 8K, max FoV, etc.
I think we won't see a device that obliterates the Oculus products for at least a year, i. e. well after HL:A's release.
And as for their comments for true next gen headsets being years away, those go for the whole industry, not just them, they are talking about the evolution of technology.

Quickly checked a few. Seems it's very heavy on the forehead which makes it very uncomfortable after a few hours. And it generally fits badly on some heads. Otherwise it seems to be amazing.
That's not the price I see now, so presumably the deal is over. Great price for however long it lasted though!
It's still 399 on Amazon.de and free delivery.
