Lemme just save this image to my desktop so I can upload it to imgur/other file hosts... oh wait, they don't accept webp
Lemme just upload it to my CMS... oh wait, I need to do legwork to make that happen
Lemme just open it in Photoshop to convert it... oh wait, it's not supported
Fuck off google
At the very least images should be saved as the original format when dragged to the damn desktop

Stop quoting those.
The problem is optimizations that CDNs are doing depending on user agent. They keep the jpg extension in file name, but return a webp because bandwidth. To get a jpeg, use a user agent spoofer on specific domains (set it to Internet Explorer 7.0) and you will get an actual jpeg.

Some CDNs have parameters that control the quality and type of image returned. If you request the original, the JPG is returned. It depends on how it's linked in the page.
Webm is shit too. Not accelerated anywhere, so CPU goes high, battery goes down.
