After watching 4 eps, its ok. Its better than i expected, but my expectations were really low, so....yeah.
But whoever thought up the stupid different timelines of the various plotlines is really stupid. I read a few of the books and played all the games so i got it, but my gf kept pausing and asking me wtf is going on.
The origin story of Yen was meh and really not needed, instead they could have just focused on world building, Ciri and Geralt. The exposition at some parts really made me cringe.
The casting is....weird is all i'm going to say about it, although Henry is quite spot on.
And i don't know if i'm starting to be paranoid, but whats with the social commentary on "how men rule the world" and women are "vessels to be used"? Of what i read and played, women were powerful as fuck (various Queens, Lodge of Sorceress, fucking Ciri) is this something that happened in the books or they added it?
2 episodes in, first impressions:
Fall of Cintra should have been kept for later (end of season), we need more political background info to understand wtf happens. You can't start with this.
Timelines are all over the place, but not obvious at all (writers forgot this ain't Westworld)
Yennefer origin was unnecessary and her story uses lots of dialogs from the books when Yennefer teaches Ciri. Hopefully they're not skipping this.
Geralt is doing good.
If you read the books, it's not bad, but otherwise it's hard to keep track of everything... if they keep it up, I see it getting cancelled after s2.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
I mean, it's not difficult to understand what is happening in every scene. But the way the story is presented, one might easily think everything is taking place around the same time. Geralt being in Braviken when Cintra falls, and then meeting Dandelion/Jaskier, while Yennefer is learning to become sorceress, for example.
Those 4 plots span over hundred years, when you include Yennefer's
Why would you need to know how long it spans and the exact timeline? It's pretty easy to understand what happens first and what next (unless it gets bonkers from ep 3 on).
I do have basic knowledge of the world from games and a couple wiki entries though.
Well, having some sense of time and space, would be nice
Most main characters haven't met so far, perhaps it gets clearer when they do. But still, Ciri's story feels out of place right now.

After having watched four eps I find this to be excellent. I'm glad they didn't use the games, yet it also feels very familiar. I had my doubt about the cast, but it has been very well done. This might be the best Netflix Original for me to date.
halfway through the season and im surprised at how much i like it lol, i only played witcher 3 so i know some things and it was not hard to follow, but because i liked the game so much i dont know if this is the reason i like the show this much. certainly the show does look like its competent despite what other people have said.
so the end goal is the plot from witcher 3? couse it feels like a prequel so far.
seems like its a success for netflix, showrunner seems passionate about the lore and characters so it will only get better with time. a good director will elevate the material more, they need to bring someone like miguel sapochnik from got for some epic battle with geralt vs monsters with some of that sweet game soundtrack
also that toss a coin to the witcher is so catchy lol it was silly but funny moment

its a prequel to the saga so far and all of it is happening prior to games with TW3 being the game that returns to the book plot but years and years later
Gonna have to rewatch the whole episode with hedgehog dude. was really struggling to keep attention.. the characters really doesn't pull me in, apart from Geralt.
people mention different time lines.. its nothing i've even noticed. lol
one thing i liked in the Polish TV series version was how it started with showing how he came to be, taken from his parents etc..
I had prepared myself a strong potion to wrestle the ugly Netflixian cockatrice, but..against all odds, I didn't need to use it. Not the whole bottle at least
There were moments in it where the editing, music and acting all came together and genuinely produced an 'oh shit, it really is The Witcher' reaction. Alas, there were several other moments where the result felt either flaccid or downright soapy cheap, thus producing the classic 'oh shit, it still is Netflix afterall'.
It's evident though that despite the inconsistency, various sabotaging attempts, hit and miss casting choices and questionable costumes (aside from the iconic ballsack), those who adapted the whole thing care about the Witcher universe and actually tried to replicate the right mix of charm, grit and unique atmosphere overall blending realism with magic. I didn't mind the mixed timelines either, everything felt rather straightforward. Haven't read the books (yet) so I can't comment on the many details of the adaptation, though the games are very dear to me, and the fact that the show could capture even a teeny bit of their atmosphere was surprising.
The most pleasant aspect for me was masterrace superchad Henry. He put proper efforts into it and nailed both CD Geraldo's mannerisms and (spot on ) voice, making the character feel believable despite the Letho-like thiccness. The sword fighting was solid as well. I wouldn't call the season great, but considering the nonexistent expectations, it wasn't a Botchling either. *S02's howling*
I give the season a 6/10. It shows promise, and they're bringing another director for Season 2 (which should start with Blood of the Elves, so the chronology won't be all over the place), so it should get better.
I'd rate it somewhere between 6-7/10. The creators made some bad choices but despite that the first season is a solid foundation. From Blood of The Elves shit gets serious, especially in Time of Contempt. Dunno if the show makes it that far, they have to improve stuff. Especially the writing.
Cavill was excellent as Geralt, Ciri and Yen was ok. Yen was bitchy enough. I liked Jaskier, although some of his dialogue was just cringy college humor at times :/ Still the actor made him an irritating jackass, just like he should be. His singing adds to his character too.
I was really sad there were cuts in the early Witcher stories. No Nivellen and Vereena Also the whole destiny part was kinda cringy because there is really not much of a setup for the, supposedly tearbringing, meeting between Geralt and his Child Surprise. No meeting her in the forest.
The Brokilon forest seemed pointless in the show as well. Triss was pretty much lame.
While it didn't disturb me much, there were *sighs* watching black elves and driads.
Fighting mostly looked great, but there was some cringe. They were mentioned here already - Striga throwing Geralt around, sword swooshes in the air etc. CGI wasn't too bad but it could be better.
So, all in all, i enjoyed the show very much but was dissapointed at times. Although my enjoyment may stem from the fact that i loved the books and games so i projected that on to the show.
Nobody? what's with the "inclusive" casting. Especially Triss, she should have red hair, period. And so inconsistent, only some people with african roots are casted, but no asians. What's wrong with asians then i've we have to cast people with different ethnical backgrounds.
Not that i am a racist, but it's just silly. The witcher has an european medieval fantasy setting, so actors should be caucasian unless there from some distant land or something.
Don't see someone make a remake of Shaka Zulu and cast 1/4 of the zulu's with white and asian people either. But in these times, who knows.
The Zerrikanian girls weren't that exotic in the show too
I found a rumor that the Grain of Truth short story i mentioned (with Nivellen and Vereena) will make it to S02. However, Geralt will be there with Ciri and not by himself like in the story.

Her hair color is described as chestnut in the books. Just sayin'.

Wasn't it "flame red" or something similar by the end of the saga? I haven't read them in a decade and might remember wrong, but this is how I think it was described during her travel to the islands and during her cat fight with Yennefer right at the end.
I only remember her introduction as a woman with chestnut hair that shine like gold. Hair aside, she was also described as very attractive and taking care of herself. Triss in the show is a miscast IMO. Not to mention she really doesn't bring anything to the table, so to speak. Well, apart for lending a hand in the battle of Sodden Hill.
