The Vortigaunts' mating call was too strong to resist and just finished it (again). I'd say the biggest difference with the 2012 version is the amount of polish overall, since the old random difficulty spikes that could be found in the more crowded maps are basically absent here (marines for instance tend to behave less robotically) and controls are more precise, making both the shooting and crouch-jumplatforming around particularly reactive. The latter is especially noticeable in the (surprisingly pretty Razz) Xen sections 2.0 Deluxe which have been altered to minimize the sense of chore, even though they suffer from pacing issues at the moment and could use some additional tweaking.

Despite some awkward lighting choices, rudimentary textures here and there, and the fact that the ol' Source is showing its age when it comes to shaders and models, the visuals hold up nicely in my opinion. More importantly though - unlike most of the modern AAA popatripe released these days, the game feels Me Gusta to play.

Edit: Some Screens pls

The handrail looks almost unshaded. Same for the handhold hanging from the top. Embarassed

Those two were the first things I noticed when I first tried the Steam version in 2018 (it starts with the train ride, naturally) and I was like ooooh boy, and nothing changed since then.

These assets didn't look out of place in the mod version, but they needed updating to work with their new engine (or maybe their engine sucks for non-Xen lighting no matter the assets, dunno).

I find this ironic that crowbar's team remaked the game on an engine that is now very dated by today standards and only 6 years were passed since the original game rls(1998 to 2004).

Took them 15 years to rls version that is payable from start to finish!

I think the graphics overall are fine.

In my early playing there's two main issues.

1. wall textures/signs are poor quality, very obvious on a high resolution display from far away. Surely they have the originals for these.

2. They use the same voice actors for very different looking people, even skin colour. It was much better in the original game since they all looked the same, it made sense they sounded the same.

Since I haven't progressed very far, I guess the quality might improve later on.

Is there an ISO-Version or similar? Don't feel like buying this just for Xen...

After The update it seems(at least for me) to corrupt all the previous saves Sad (I am on legal version), says they are "outdated".

You can still play from the start of the chapter you recently played though, it seems to save it via cloud.

The update is showing as 10 gigs for me and previously the game was around 15 gigs total in size. I wonder how big the game will actually end up being as it seems to be a pretty large patch but I guess I will find out in a few hours thanks to my slow DSL.

Every single update they have released has made the previous saves stop working, I believe.

It's literally impossible for us to not break saves if we update the game. It's the way Source works. And, given that we're an Early Access game, of course we're going to be updating the game. That's the point of Early Access.

You are able to start a new game from the Xen chapter. Or use a console command to unlock the chapters. You do not have to play the entire game again.

Shouldn't really be bigger than the beta? It's just bug fixes, no new content.

I am pretty sure I read something about implanting the workshop and black mesa's sdk in the future if not available already? But I think it's pretty much content complete other than that.

I did not bother installing the beta branch and just checked now that it is done and the game is 25 gigs so this patch did add another 10 gigs to the game size.

I am pretty much at the end of the game (Xen's levels) and must admit, it was worth the long wait, the xen levels are basically almost a whole new game in source engine.

Some levels pre-Xen, feels like a direct copy from The original HL but the true "reimaginations" stuffs feels more modern and fitting to modern times.

Cuz lets admit some aspects of the Original game are dated.

I finished it the other week. They've done great things with the engine, but I must be honest, it just wasn't all that fun. Xen was a was a chore after the first hour and it became a case of completing it so I could just put it to bed.

I found the same thing.

Its mostly because it was so repetitive

New Area > Can see exit but can't access > Puzzle to find button to exit

Repeat 30 times.

If I remember correctly (and it was a LOOONG time ago) Xen in the original Half Life was quite frustrating and annoying as well and didn't really feel "right" compared to the rest of the game.

Yes but it was also a lot shorter.

I watched a half life 1 playthrough on youtube after I finished black mesa and I realised the original was quite short and quick to play through.

Black Mesa extended most areas of Half Life but the side effect of this was that it became a little annoying as there wasn't enough fun gameplay added.

Also a lot of annoying saving and reloading as small mistakes can make you take insane amounts of damage due to huge difficulty spikes in areas, which wasn't present in the original game.

They are, It seems the reason for the crash is that I tried to accsess unfinished area which is not even required to progress in the game.

The game is still not 100% finished and some sttuff needs to be fixed, despite overall u can still play it from start to finish.

Just finished the game yesterday.

I don't know what to say about nihilth battle, on the other hand there some cool stuff they added and nice graphics effects, but they cut some stuffs maybe cuz they decided to change stuffs they thought were bad and need to be improved.

The graphics of the game feels pretty weird, it can feels a bit dated some levels but outstanding on the others.

It goes to show how much more effort is required to make a decent looking and playing game these days.

Nothing about the development of this game is representative of other games.

If they had used a modern engine they wouldn't have wasted years implementing some modern features to Source.

Source engine 2 it self feels somewhat " too little, too late" in comparison to other engines, I don't think I even heard about 3rd party that gonna use it.

Source engine 2 looks impressive, but there are already exiting alternatives.

It's been in use for 4 years now, just no game used it in a major way, i.e. Dota 2, Artifact, Underlords were meant to be low-spec friendly titles.
