I don't even own the game and haven't done more than use the iso-demo to check if the performance was too heavy for my system (I had an overclocked 3GB Radeon 7950 and either 2500K or 3570K). I finished and loved the first game, took a while to get into. The second game lost me for some reason and I haven't tried it in a long time.
I think controls and fighting annoyed me in both TW2 and TW3. Too many buttons, potions, signs or whatever to keep track of all the time. I guess once you've got it in your head it's no longer an issue but I just didn't last that long.
TW2 controls and fighting are shit throughout, the balance, loot drops, almost everything gameplay-related was a mess. TW3 was an improvement, although it was even more streamlined. Back when they were starting work on TW2 CDPR made the decision to copy Batman Arkham Asylum's combat system and that's why they fucked up so bad.
Yeah, they have a system that changes the fighting animation based on the distance between you and the target, somewhat similar to Batman, which can get fucking annoying; but the games are balanced. Unless you're playing on higher difficulties on your first playthrough in a game where you kinda have to know the fights beforehand so that you can use the right potions/oils in advance.

They have the problem of a hard start and halfway through it becomes too easy. Half of the potions and oils are pretty much useless on normal difficulty because you don't really need them. You can play with a couple of potions and oils the entire game. There are very op builds too, like the alchemy one in TW3 and even back to TW1 you had the signs build, which was the best on the vanilla game.
CDPR actually did a lot of rebalancing for the EE version of TW2 since the original tutorial was brutal for new players, and then introduced the dark items that furthered made the gameplay easier. If you crafted the first set of armor you ccould essentially not bother with item drops for the rest of the game.

I don't mind "cheat mods" if they make the game more fun for me to play. Normally something like godmode etc. ruins the experience. Quality of Life-improvements on the other hand can rescue and bring forth the hidden greatness in certain games.
Thanks for the mod tips. I'll check them out (and most likely look for more). I guess I simply didn't like how they changed the control scheme between the games forcing you to learn a new (and somewhat messy) combat system that was too different from the first game. It turned me off. Yet I want to play them so much, esp. TW3. It's been ages since I've played a proper fantasy action-rpg.
The combat system in the first game was really bad though. Not like it was amazing in 2 or 3 but it was miles better than in 1.
1 is the only one with an interesting combat system even if nothing amazing. 2 and 3 just have godawful versions of combat seen in hundreds of other games.

Yeah, I have to say .. I agree here. W1's combat actually had some level of strategy to it, what with the correct attack timing and the weapon switching, I enjoyed it quite a bit - never really understood why so many held it in such low regard.
I felt like it had low interactivity and really unclear feedback. They took NWN engine’s indirect combat and tried to make it more interactive with a somewhat simplistic qte and stance system.

I really, REALLY enjoyed the combat from Witcher 1. It felt perfect for an ARPG game. Sadly, it had to - of course - be simplified for the... simple gamers.
If I had to choose between the three combat systems I'd probably pick 1 as well. One thing is for sure, the brainless rolling-sans-dodging in the second game was for me a system that made the experience too mundane and just not up to Geraldina's standards. The third game brought some needed improvements when it comes to dynamicity, and I did enjoy the combat on the hardest difficulty after I set my own self-gimping rules (dodge-only, no Quen abuse, etc.), although it still remained the game's weakest part.
The W3EE mod is what really pushes the combat towards the right direction in my opinion, by forcing the player to think and flank enemies, measure the attacks (strong ones drain you, but they're genuinely effective), learn to parry properly, ration loot, use specific builds since standard leveling up isn't the focus anymore, and so on. Some of the default values bring it too far, but thankfully they're tweakable a la Skyrim Requiem.
Say what you want about the last two AC games, but they actually have a way better combat system. Trying to get back to W3 now where there is very few good titles until March, but cant really get into it the same way I did with the elder scrolls games. Dont really know why either. It still looks a lot better than many 2019 games, the world is huge and lots of stuff to do... Guess ill just keep playing. Back when it was released I kinda had the same experience. Back then I only played a few hours, and I know this is a long one (she said)
Mother figure, daughter figure and lover all in one all at once.
(Fans will have to sort out the whole Triss and Yennifer thing though they're both kinda mentor roles kinda lover roles kinda mother figures so yeah..)
Only thing missing is Shani but Gerry is still kinda hiding the fact he sorta murdered her grandmother that one time...wedding party was fun though and the old lady died of natural causes anyway.
...Witcher 1 had plenty of rapey old people anyway though so it'd probably work out as self defense anyway.
("Oh my daughter has tits like apples but if I was 20 years younger..." Well looks like it's time to run Geralt .. straight into every other sex crazed female in that game. ~ )
EDIT: And damn if dwarves don't get around.
(More pleasantly than she-elves too.)
"I fucked a she-elf once." Every thug in the game ever.
"Yo moma sucks dwarf cock." Every thug in the game also.
EDIT: Although with Witcher 3 I guess the whole double-timing thing would end a bit more dramatic if the girls knew what Geralt had been doing some years earlier.
(And a dryad - that's basically a tree isn't it? - and some lake girl - that's a fish. - undead of sorts - well that's a thing. - Adda - Foltest will be pleased but he's kinda dead anyway. - Various peasants, witches, random elves, humans and ... two nuns. Oh my god..dess. )

Or even without when you just hand some random item over and by the power of being alive for nearly 100 years (That's a lot of experience!) just basically getting around, a lot.
I liked Shani though well Witcher 1 had Triss feeling more manipulative too plus the whole Alvin thing and all that.
Then the devs basically sidelined her until the Heart of Stone DLC but that was a nice reunion.
EDIT: Should replay the series at some point really, Geralt going back to his bros in their little castle of sorts and traveling around the Northern Territories while also somehow getting more and more heroic in build and stature.
EDIT: Though the early games artwork and presentation is probably more accurate. Also really pretty.
(And now Eskil can also share in Geralt's problem with teenage daughters. Law of consequence or something was it.)
