I have a quest now, as a side to my CV1 - I intended to sell the CV1 but no fucker is buying... *grumble*
Anyway, I have been playing with the Link beta, and it indeed works. The image IS lower res than the quest is capable of, but I believe this is low due to still working on the data compression - it is supposedly being increased to more or less Quest native levels in the near future (I guess when the cable is released).
IF they can get the visuals to the same res as the Quest... it'll be superb. The ONLY bad thing is the artificial 72Hz limit (I am guessing this is just to ensure the poor CPU in the Quest can actually keep up) - which apparently can be upped to 90Hz... if they can allow this via the Link with no dropped frames and the same resolution.... oh yes.
Beat Saber without cables is also a revelation!
I am still waiting for true VR 3.0... GPU's are almost capable of the power required, and I suspect the increase in consumer CPU cores will also help with background processing...
VR is absolutely not dead and I think is set to just get better - and smaller.

Will you need to manually manipulate various parts of guns (and other objects) to use them? Is there a more automated mode for guns?
Half-Life: Alyx’s core combat skill is about using your hands to interact with your weapons efficiently. Reloading is the first of the weapon interactions that you’ll learn. Alyx’s pistol has a multi-step process to reload it, and we see almost all players starting out fairly clunky, doing each step in isolation, but after a bit of practice they start to blend it together. Soon it becomes one single, smooth process, after which we often see them start to put a bit of flair into their movement. But eventually they find themselves having to do it while a zombie is right in front of them, and it all goes to hell. Some players have cited the moment where they fumbled and dropped their magazine at the foot of the attacking zombie as the highlight of their playtest.
So, yes, there’s a fair amount of manual manipulation of weapons, some related to reloading and others related to special functionality. In some cases, the same actions can be performed by buttons on the controller. The rules for this vary between the weapons, because we wanted each weapon to feel like a new and interesting object to interact with, and eventually master. We are aiming to have a wide set of accessibility options for players with limited motor capabilities, so there will be automation options.
Quote:
Have you tested full consecutive playthroughs of the campaign with lots of people? How much have you found players able to handle a VR story game considering many people can’t handle long stretches in VR?
Early on in the project, we looked at SteamVR’s data to see how long players were spending in sessions, and tried to fit Half-Life: Alyx’s experience to it, mostly from a pacing perspective. But once we had the first hour or two of the game built, and started playtesting it, we found that literally every player would spend longer in the session than we expected. It was very common for them to end their session, and their first comment would be “Wow, that was the longest I’ve ever been in VR!”. As the game grew longer and longer, and our Index hardware prototypes improved, we saw players increase their session lengths even further. Today, we generally see playtesters go for 2-3 hours before taking a bathroom break. Even subtle improvements seemed to have significant effects, like the way the Index controllers allowed players to open and relax their hands without dropping the controller.
Oh, and my favorite piece of the interview:
Quote:
Is it designed to be played in small chunks? Can you save whenever you want and pick it back up? Checkpoints? Something else?
We really like to allow players to experience games in the ways that work best for them, even if the designer in us wishes to have tighter control. So yes, you can save and restore anywhere you like, the same way you could in previous Half-Life games.
Take that Superhot and Boneworks developers! If you think you know better than Valve - you don't.
They also confirmed no open world, and no plans for MP.

regardless if its true or not, do you expect anyone to say "it was "mehh" not as special as i thought it'd be"? Its prerelease so everything should be treated as bullshit. A general rule for me.
No, that would be rude. If they didn't like it I would expect them to say nothing, no one knew they went to play the game, so no one expected them to say something. Therefore, if they are making a comment on it that they liked it, then they liked it.

Yes, everyone that has played the game must go and tweet that it was the bestest VR game they have played so that they don't break poor Valve's heart and delay the game another 25 years.

Following last week’s announcement of Half-Life: Alyx, most Index packages—the headset-only, controllers-only, and headset + controller packages—are currently listed in the US and Canadian stores as sold out with a ‘Back in Stock Soon’ message in place of the order button.
As for the ‘full kit’ package (headset + controllers + base stations) in the US, Valve is advising that anyone ordering today can “expect delivery before December 25th,” nearly a month from now.
If you order now the Index you can expect to get it in February, as supplies struggle to meet the big increase in demand HL:A caused!
New orders of the $1,000 Valve Index VR kit “will ship in February 2020,” according to the Steam store, “due to recent high demand” following the reveal of the full VR game in the iconic franchise set between the events of Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2. Just a few days ago the high quality VR system was backordered to January after shipments of new orders pushed past Christmas at the start of the month.

Oculus Quest is becoming more and more difficult to purchase as we get closer and closer to Christmas, especially if you want the device to arrive before the holiday.
Both the 64GB and 128GB models of the Oculus Quest are out of stock on Amazon, at the time of writing, with resellers gouging consumers at extraordinarily inflated prices. Likewise, the Oculus Store in the United States shows a shipping date of January 29 and 24 for both the 64GB and 128GB models respectively. Best Buy online in the United States is also sold out of the standalone headset from Facebook.
On Amazon in the United States, the $400 64GB model is being sold by third-parties through Amazon from prices starting at $895, going up to $1,100 – almost 3x the original retail price. Similarly, prices for the $500 128GB model from third party sellers on Amazon start at $1000 and go up as high as $1500. These third party sellers often don’t have the same fast shipping guarantees as Amazon either, so as we get closer to Christmas Day, it becomes less likely that an order from these resellers would reach you in time.
Let's face it, neither Valve nor Facebook were expecting such a tremendously (by the looks of it) high and sudden increase in interest in VR.
- I've already explained the big VR R&D costs of Valve. If WMR reference designs cost $500 (Odyssey+ on Samsung.com), no shit the Index is going to cost significantly more since they didn't copy an already existing design given to them by others!
- Valve didn't intent to and didn't produce their own retail Steam Machines (they made 300 to test the reception of the concept but after that it was up to others to come up with their own designs and follow the guidelines of Valve), so there's not much of a relevant connection there.

Rift S: Great, although switching weapons is done by pressing the joystick instead of the trackpad on Index
Quest (with Link): Heavy on the face, might need a Franken-Quest to play for longer sessions
Vive: Great, but the puck on the Wands smack together when sliding the pistol
Cosmos: Tracking is wonky. Aiming drifts when you have the controllers close to your face for iron sight.
CV1 (2-Camera Setup, Sitting): Great
WMR (Odyssey+): Great, but the large ring smack together when sliding the pistol
Pimax (with Index Controllers): Great
Summary, awesome on everything, but Cosmos is iffy.
And good to know the game seems so promising. They couldn't say much because of NDA, but they could confirm stuff like an immense amount of art assets, interactivity, and mobility.

I spent the week playing Half-Life: Alyx at @valvesoftware in 4 to 5 hour daily sessions on an Index. It’s amazing! Gameplay, visuals, pacing, story are all fantastic. Much bigger VR game than I thought it was going to be with so many great moments. It’s a real game y’all!

I re-watched the trailer after playing HL: Alyx and it does a terrific job conveying what it feels like to play the game. It all holds up well.

Retards on utub posting random gameplay videos why they yap is a cardinal sin. Even worse than MorongYea raising his eyebrow to show how appalled he is by his own clickbait.
Screenshots look good. But everyone keeps forgetting that this is not how we will see the game.
Even on best vr headsets like S or Index, the game will look pixelated with chromatic aberration (some of it), sweet spot only in the center of the lenses and so on.
Kinda a shame there is no standard mode too. Would love to appreciate it in 4k to see all the detail. Vr now kinda looks like Bloodobrne on ps4 now but only not warped and sharp in the middle of the screen...
But fuck me if I am not thinking about rebuying Rigt S

As long as Alyx runs fine I can survive on the current res.
Hope it supports that VRSS feature by Nvidia though.
I will wait for reviews. If the game is good and runs great on 2070 then I can buy S ... again

vr looks just like screenshots to me (other than the potato res, vive user), if the rift s causes chromatic aberration for you, it's because you can't set the IPD on it and you need a headset that can, either that or you don't have the headset fitted correctly.
