New CacheOut Speculative Execution Vulnerability Hits Intel Processors

Intel is not spared when it comes to the number of vulnerabilities that keep hitting their processors. The latest one is CacheOut, a new speculative execution attack that is capable of leaking data from Intel CPUs across many security boundaries. All processors up-to-the recent Coffee lake refresh are effected.

Despite Intel's attempts to address previous generations of speculative execution attacks, CPUs are still vulnerable, allowing attackers to exploit these vulnerabilities to leak sensitive data. Unlike previous MDS issues, the researchers show in their work how an attacker can exploit the CPU's caching mechanisms to select what data to leak, as opposed to waiting for the data to be available.

They then demonstrate that CacheOut can violate nearly every hardware-based security domain, leaking data from the OS kernel, co-resident virtual machines, and even SGX enclaves. CacheOut can bypass software fixes. Making it possible to extract data from both the kernel of the OS and from virtual machines, and also from something that Intel calls 'software guard extensions' (SGX) that normally is stored securely.

Researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Adelaide have found this new bug, and posted a paper on it. Read the paper. It seems that once again only Intel processors are affected including Core, Xeon and Atom models. AMD is save from this vulnerability.

And another microcode update that may affect performance. I wonder how big the aggregate performance hit from the new and all previous microcode fixes is by now.

The worst thing is.. most of these are speculative attacks. 99.99999% of the time they won't, can't!, affect the average home user so the forced microcode updates that slam performance are just... meh. Still, that's what we get when Intel cuts corners in their chip designs in order to beat AMD Neutral

The affected CPU's aren't from an era where AMD was strong though. The 6000 series are from 2015 and Ryzen wasn't released until 2017. So if they cut corners, it wasn't to beat AMD.

If Ryzen hadn't come around, we'd be still buying the same re-hashed 4-core Intel CPU's with 50MHz more here and there... and of course every update would require a new mainboard Mad

True enough, though this isn't just about Ryzen.. it goes all the way back to the Core2 processors and Intel vs AMD's Athlon/FX range too. Always cutting corners. I love my R5-2600X but I'm definitely going to drop in a 3600 at some point, the IPC jump between Zen+ and Zen2 is great \o/

Oh and speaking of Zen+

Except there hasn't been a single confirmed "victim" of Meltdown/Spectre in the wild, just because something "can" happen doesn't mean it "will" -- which is the nature of speculative attacks.

BTW wasn't there some power target fix for the 3800 to let it run at 3700 levels?

I was torn between a 2600X or an i5-8400, that was my budget, and I found a fantastic deal on a 2600X and a ROG Strix B450F combo that ended up being 1000kr (pretty much dead on £100) cheaper for the Ryzen kit. No brainer Very Happy If Intel didn't keep fucking us over with new chipsets every new fucking processor they put out, I'd be more inclined to stick with them.. as it is, the board I'd have bought for the i5-8400 would have been obsolete the instant I unpacked it Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

This B450F? Will handle Zen2, up to and including Ryzen 9-3950X, and may even handle the upcoming 4000 series too if AMD is feeling generous Laughing

I've been back on AMD since the Ryzen 1700 which I recently gave away to a good friend (along with board, RAM, and an RX570) when I got a 3700x.

Intel and their shenanigans can suck my dick.

True, but it still comes across as a knee-jerk reaction and a damaging one at that, considering the severe performance penalty (or rather... removal of the "corner cutting" bringing the processors back to the speed they'd have had originally without it Laughing)

It's a shame the updates are not optional. I agree with Sabin, the likelihood of hitting this is very low.

not for normal desktop usage/gaming. wait what intel will show to beat amd again. until then the 6700k will be just fine.

Gonna be long wait Laughing anyway, 4 cores / 8 threads will be soon huge bottleneck, it can already be in some engines.

Any new BIOS for my board (AORUS MASTER) gets the CPU Microcodes replaced with much older ones (aka - faster), via the easy to use UBU app Wink

Doesn't AMD/Intel push microcode updates via WUpdate too? Surely that will undo the BIOS patching you've done?

Dunno? I'm an LTSC guy, so if they are included in any CU updates, which maybe so?, then I'm unaware.

I use all necessary means to exclude from OS also, usual Reg edits, InSpectre etc.

Over on the Gigabyte forums, we have been monitoring the last few BIOS updates, and with each iteration of the microcodes, it has dramatically declined performance, without doubt, hence, we always edit latest BIOS with the fastest ones tested.

Honestly, I'm with Leo; we should be given the CHOICE. End-users should be given the choice whether to be forced into mitigation patches or not.

I agree, wholeheartedly.

Of course, some will lose out on this procedure, as in the likes of my board, no 9900KS support, if you wish the fastest codes, as the ones that do run well, pre-date this chip Smile

So yeah, forced is correct, for some, awful!

God damn Anti-Patchers! Patches do not lead to performance drops! Every non-patched CPU can infect a number of also non-patched CPUs! We have to increase the herd immunity Cool Face
