Ah I see.. So what do you suggest? I don't have a NAS. Currently I actually just put the files into my network share and the TV can access it, but I guess letting a full computer run in the background to watch a movie is... wasteful Laughing

I don't use Windows Wink What do I need HDMI 2.0 for when playing movies?

You need it for 60 fps. You should always play videos at their native speed (24 if normal), but to support 60, you need 2.0. Seems like pretty short sighted and stupid to throw 300-400 USD on a NUC that has some backwards HDMI 1.4 in 2020 (or 2018).

Plex always chose transcoding when littlest of things didn't work on the client (TV) and that killed the performance. Even selecting built-in subtitles resulted in transcoding

Anyway no point talking about Plex. Kodi is superior in every way and I'm not switching back Very Happy

You are talking about the Plex player, which is shit. The server has nothing to do with that.

Thank goodness for Serviio. PC is connected to router, TV is connected to router and support DLNA (which is what Serviio serves). Just open the player with the TV remote, browse through the definable folders or choose "latest added". No transcoding unless I actively enable it (and I never do). So simple.

I use Plex server (PMS) to point to a share, so that it can download pretty pictures and organize things for easy search/filter. The Plex player (any of them) are terrible, and not recommended. But Plex server can be connected to by plethora of high quality players.

The two have nothing to do with each other. You can still use Kodi on a streamer, connect it directly to your network shares and stream.

Plex is simply convenience, but unrelated to Nuc's terrible hardware choices.

Nah plex is decent for on the go streaming of your own shit. Their android and Apple players are shit. Browser support is decent. Ps4 app is decent. And you cater your platform. Organized and pretty.
Kodi does it as well, but it's not as user friendly. Plex is easier for the nanny. Kodi is... I ain't got time to train people how to operate it. They need Kodi for ps4, or smart tvs w/o issues. Surprised plex is on so many platforms especially since its mainly for piracy lol.

"Kodi"—XBMC—has some of the most atrocious UI/UX ever made. Even worse than VLC. Truly the Linux of media center software. Laughing

Worst UX goes to Netflix, those fucking autoplaying trailers while scrolling through make me want to strangle the guy that came up with it.

Kodi you can skin at least.

Netflix is shit since they tinker with their algorithms to make you interested in their own shows not the shit they're renting to lower the prices so they pay less to renew lisence.

Plex player is pretty bad too, to be honest. They abandoned to good designs they had years ago for cross-platform crapola everywhere.

I use Infuse, which connects directly to the Plex backend. It can connect directly to a network share too, but I find their metadata pulling to be lacking, so I use Plex for that and Infuse for the UI.

Plex is easiest.
Most user friendly, loaded with bloatware and as some have said it's better to use a different player than plex.
Kodi as pretty as it is, and as open it is, if you don't know what you're doing when using it, you're a button away from disaster.

Both are easy to use for regular users.

Plex allows streaming away from home. It builds the server for you, transcodes it for you.

You can make your own server, organize it how you see fit. But it requires work and know how and all that jazz.

For in home only go Kodi.
To stream it on your mobile devices, go plex or vlc app and drag and drop content.

Plex is retarded. If I want to use PGS subtitles, it insists on transcoding because the developers are useless twats. Their tonemapping sucks too. On the other hand, I have an issue with Infuse, I go to their forum, ask politely (yes, I can do that too), and it's in the next beta. Night and day.

Yeah their player is shit. They're now focused on deals with partners and have a catalogue of shit movies no streaming service wants lol. They stopped focusing on real features.

Infuse is apple only though. So hella gay.

On the other hand you have web derpas that have no sense of design, no sense of coherency, just throwing shit together and calling it a day. As I said, web UI is a direct descendant of Linux UI.
