Can't say I'm surprised, they took on way way too much with very little crowdfunding. Massively failed to deliver on the Underworld reboot (which should have been a slam dunk).

Making the sequel to two masterpieces that defined gaming and set new standards is both a beautiful challenge and a ridiculously huge risk, and I'm not sure the talent in the company (or what's left of it ) is actually up to the task - no matter the team involved. After the absurdly clumsy Ascendant disaster, Otherside have very little investor confidence as well which doesn't help either.
Let's hope for the best, though I'm already prepared for every possible post-shodancalypse. As sad as it might be, I'd always prefer a cancellation over yet another painfully mediocre title tainting a glorious franchise.

Crap. I guess that's that then. Warren Spector has the talent and experience but they lacked serious money and a more well built team. A game like Shock 3 requires a big team of high end professionals, a loooot of money and strong publisher support.
Quote: | Starbreeze Studios was originally planning to provide a $12 million "publishing-only" investment in System Shock 3, allowing OtherSide to retain all rights while seeking a 120% return on investment followed by equal shares of revenue splitting. Starbreeze's investment will allow the game to be developed for consoles in addition to the planned personal computer versions. However, in the wake of several financial problems in late 2018, Starbreeze has given back the publishing rights to System Shock 3 to OtherSide, and separated itself from the project. OtherSide stated they had the capability to self-publish System Shock 3 should they be unable to find a publishing partner but would prefer to have a publishing partner. |
They need a strong publishing partner that will let the studio grow by headhunting the best, bankroll the development and let Warren and gang make the game without external interference. System Shock 3 should be a Triple-AAA title and those are expensive as hell to make. They got ~$860,000 from the kickstarter and I don't know about any big investor. A game like this would/should cost around $40 million to make.
Sad day indeed.

SS 3 wasn't on kickstarter nor was crowdfunded anywhere else. SS Remake was on Kickstarter only.

Duh, yes you're right. So who's funding SS3? Is the studio using it's own capital? Since Starbreeze backed out with their $12 million due to financial difficulties OtherSide (Austin?) is in dire need of a serious investor.

Did anyone actually want this considering what a fuck up they made with Underworld?
I'd rather the franchise stayed dead than be revived by an incompetent necromancer.

Sure, although now I'm thinking Starbreeze forced the release of Underworld half-baked to try avoid bankruptcy.

i for sure dont. Why would i want some indie, unfunded, understaffed, modern, multiplatform reimagining of classic PC titles ? Im very happy this wont get made.
The guy that worked on the game who talked about how the development went on rpgcodex even said spector was very hands off, they actually needed him to be more involved. So, spectors involvement in the game was just his name. Then, the guy said the game would have been a much smaller and different game than people would have expected from such a franchise.
Thank god this wont get made. I hope Stalker 2 never sees the light of day either. Those games are some of my favourite ones in the medium. I like when people talk about them - those three are it. Thats what you have to play if you're interested in stalker. Otherwise, move on. I dont want it to be a world like with Supreme Commander, where 1 is the finest rts ever made and the apex of rts design. And Supcom 2 is a fucking console wattered down shit. Cause thats what stalker 2 is gonna be. A console turd for modern audiences and sensibilities.

Gotta be honest, all these failed Kickstarters and the like with old big names seem to indicate that classic dev teams were a sum of their parts rather than the actions of one or two big names.
Makes you wonder how many talented devs/designers got overlooked because they didn't develop such a public following.

If the chicoms are paying some millions to make a SS3, I'm cool with it. For the moment I am interested in the SS1 remake by my favourite devs, Nightdive!
