Jesus F* Christ, I've reached the 7th level, been playing on Nightmare and it's an absolute mess , on 2016 the same difficulty was manageble but on this game it's quite frustrating
Yeah, after finishing the Eternal marathon I decided to reinstall 2016 again, there is truly a night and day difference in terms of approach and philosophy between the two games. 2016 suddenly feels noticeably emptier, slower, more straightforward (including the arenas) and definitely easier, but in this particular case these are not necessarily negatives.
Encounters are more meaningful, the many "calm-before-the-storm" moments contribute to making the atmosphere more gripping, and when it's time to rip and tear, you have the freedom to kill enemies with no restrictions. Want to murder everyone with the rocket launcher? No problemo. Want to shotgun all demons to hell and back? Aw yiss. And so on. If you know what you're doing you need to resort to pinatas only once/twice per encounter which is reasonable-ish, and the gameplay has a naturally pleasant flow to it (despite the many console concessions) which Eternal partially lost.
I must admit, Marauders cause me much frustration. Not only are they annoying to fight, they seem quite buggy as well.
Sometimes if you shoot them towards the end of an attack animation the shots seem to miss completely even though they aren't blocking or taking any sort of evasive action.
finished the (first?) Mars mission and I'm headed for Sentinel Prime.
So far I love it. I understand why journalists who have to review every Call of Duty, Division and Battlefield every year are delighted and why some players like it less than Doom 2016. You need to play the game by its unique rules, it leaves little room for self-expression. For me, it's been a thrilling ride so far.
I also dig the HUD. It does prevent you from immersing in the world like you would in many modern games, but I'm satisfied with what it does to the gameplay. It feels like you're piloting a jet in a dogfight game and are informed on low ammo, incoming missiles and damage taken. Instead of being tastefully hidden until you look for it, that information is displayed in an "annoying" way to catch your attention from the corner of your eye.
The complaints about hard difficulties being hard... What did you expect
Just play on Normal if you don't want the extra challenge.
The only step-back for me so far is the atmosphere. The sense of dread as you explore an abandoned facility is gone, nowadays Doomguy travels with his Stargate wherever he sees fit. No sense of danger.
Also the humor is overdone. When I saw a magazine on the floor with the term "mortally challanged", I smirked. A few levels later, when a hologram shouted "don't call then demons, call them mortally challenged", I just rolled my eyes. This isn't an edge case, the whole game is littered with on-the-nose jokes instead of the dry humour that Doom 2016 had.
Maybe my opinion will change in the second half, but so far I'm having a lot of fun. Just wanted to offer a different take to the negativity in this thread.

I find it hard that this game came almost 4 years after doom 2016.. should have come 1 year ago nobody would have cared, it doesnt look any better really.. sure gameplay is fast and fluid.. but i mean they overdid many parts... why platform elements ? gtfo.... even intro kinda is meh... in doom 2016 it started so much better imo... hardly worth the price now....

But my big gripe with 2016 was that encounters didn't feel meaningful at all, and was just wave crap in your face each time you entered a new room

Exactly, now imagine that cranked up to eleven with the enemy density increased by 200% inside arenas designed for bunny-hopping, and you have Eternal

Eye doctor.. now!
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
This game feels like a platform puzzle game with extra shooting elements.
Also, for some reason the colors look more washed compared to previous game. Is it just me?
Finished on Ultra-Violence. I'm too old for that shit, my neck hurts from all the tension during battles the game is fun but forces you to play the glorified rock/paper/scissors #NotMyDoom

yeah maps in doom 2016 felt better imo, better color palette and all...
this is what happens when carmack isnt making games anymore...
DOOM Eternal commits the cardinal sin of trying to reinvent something that didn’t need reinvention. This being said, if you can get past a few questionable design choices, you’ll find more of everything that you love in the series.
Pros:
+ A better story
+ Great atmosphere
+ Solid gunplay
+ Intricate level design
+ Great variety of enemies
+ Detailed gore
+ Lengthy
Cons:
– Uninspired changes to the gameplay loop
– Low quality environmental textures
– Overextension of platforming
– Invisible walls and other motion stoppers
– Smaller combat arenas
Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
