Really great game. Compared to other shooters of this decade, it does have great pacing and builds itself up very well, which is something not many people appreciate anymore. Of course, that point is more a proof of how great the original was.

But the BM team managed to make everything feel "larger" and connected. It didn't feel like you were just running along a set of corridors, the way they built the levels had you feel that there was more behind the walls. That being said, you definitely notice that different level designers were working on those levels.

While Xen might be a bit long, they really succeeded with creating an alien world that does not want you and where you do not belong. I never really detested the original Xen as much as many others, but still it was more or less something to go through before the final boss. Here, you do get a real feeling that you are intruding in another world.

Unfortunately I found that they had placed ammo a bit sparsely in Xen. Of course I get the idea that you should be scrambling for ressources, but what it led to was that I mainly used the bee gun that recharges automatically, which did not help to improve the speed at which you can advance. Health/Armor were around plenty with those recharge pools, so that "limited ressources" feeling never came across anyway.

Apart from a few smaller bugs (the crocodile enemies hit WAY too hard and catapulted me out of bounds several times and one time a trigger did not load) I did not encounter any major problems.

Definitely recommended and a must-play for anybody who thinks all shooter are spunkgargleweewee only.

Exactly, this is the main reason the game feels so special in a timeless way. The pacing and level/environmental script design combo is engineered to boost the immersion factor for the player, which is something most modern shooters just "forget" to provide. It may not have stylish animations or technically complex shooting mechanics (then again, old engine is old), but like all the first-person titles designed for m&kb it feels pleasantly direct, rewarding and free from annoying layers of silly visceral molasse.

Xen is just copypasta galore. How many times one has to connect the fucking cables. Aliens really hate easy maintenance of their hardware.

The initial level is beautiful but once you get to the Vortigaunt factory of magic it's super ugly and completely different from initial levels.

Yea the forests were pretty good. Made you feel like this is something Valve could have made, akin to the episodes.

But then it goes downhill with the factories and the overdoing of the puzzles.

Should have just not touched the level design and pacing and with that extra time polish some of the non-xen content.

Like I said before, the extended Vortigaunt factory takes inspiration from the worst Half-Life level i.e Residue Processing. Don't know what they were thinking.

Other than that, this should replace the original Half-Life when people do a playthrough of the series. The Black Mesa team made some actual effort to establish the retcons that Valve did in HL2.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

The amount of effort that went into this is insane, they created a new, living world. No wonder it took so long.

The xen parts are a bit too long and repetitive but it's worth it when you reach the final boss.

A really unique project Smile

One question: How is the experience in the silo with the blind thingies with good hearing compared to the original game?

It's well done, not quite sure what exactly you want to hear. It's still there. It's been ages since I played the OG Half-Life, but I think they streamlined the "outer" levels (where you activate the combustion engine). This is definitely for the better because it plays really well.

The actual room is still fear-inducing, but it's possible to traverse it quite quickly.

Finished this and must say im impressed and see how it took so long to fully release it. It was great when games didn't tell you anything yet you didn't have to be a genius to progress either. Only at one point in Xen did I have to check out a walk trough to progress. The fights are well balanced and the use of physics is nice, its not used as much as in HL2 who really wanted to show off the engine back then tho. Xen actually looks pretty great despite it being in source engine.

I also realize I never completed HL1 at any point. I was 8 years old at the time of its release. Yet I played MP on LAN parties. Great memories of crossfire! Smile

Yeah, these guys truly care about their project and are perfectionists (even too much Razz), which is a rarity today in the industry. The Xen sections might not be too well-paced, but BM definitely is the best remaking job that Half-Life could ever hope for. I took advantage of the Gabeian 50% off and finally went legit, gotta support the men Dude Cool

How after so many years of updates no one from the team took a couple of hours to update the ancient lowres textures you see in the tram ride - the very first scene of the game - humanity will never know.
