Just completed, total playtime was 10 hours. Honestly I loved it, good length, good mix of puzzles, story-telling and shooter. It's obviously the most polished best looking VR game to date, i like they showed restraint and didn't go overboard trying to add half-baked features and fail like a lot of VR titles do. To elaborate:

- Played the whole thing with trackpad locomotion and could do so for several hours without feeling queezy. I don't know if it's the speed, level design or way they handle strafed movement, there is no vignetting effect.. anyway it was a good experience.

- Went with one-handed weapons, too handed sucks without a physical stock and you can't adjust a physical stock while playing through a game. I have a makeshift one for playing Onward, you set it up for 1 particular weapon and use that load-out the whole time you play. Holding two hands freely in the air sucks, so I'm glad they avoided that.

- It's the first time I've seen the head clipping handled properly. The way they have implemented it here should be standard in every VR title. You shouldn't be able to put your head through a wall or door and they have that sorted out.

- 3d audio as already mentioned, i've got the deluxe audio strap (I presume the speakers arn't that great?), overhead noise, people talking from other rooms, panning of sound effects etc it really is incredible what they've done here.

- I think keeping the control scheme simple worked quite well, they havn't gone overboard with the mechanics, there is enough interaction with the weapons and world to keep you interested.

Anyway looking forward to replay with index controllers one day.

Fascinating stuff, thanks for posting. I went with continuous locomotion and occasionally used the teleport to navigate some obstacles. I didn't notice until it was pointed out, the work put into the teleport sounds considering weight and vertical movement.

I played with blink teleport because I wanted to have the most comfortable experience for my first playthrough, as I learn how the game plays. I will replay it soon with continuous locomotion.

I usually just skip through game-play on mute for game reviews, admit VR reviews in particular are the absolute fucking worst for the annoying reviewer tooling around instead of showcasing a game.

Out of professional interest, exactly how should a reviewer show a VR game, in order to 'showcase' it? Genuine question.

Ended up watching a playthrough of this for the story, as I doubt I'll be able to get a VR setup anytime soon.

Biggest issue for me is not so much the cost, but the amount of space required for roomscale. I'd probably have to move a lot of stuff around in my apartment to have a viable play area.

You need nothing but reaching space - roomscale is not required. Hell you can play this game sitting down - there's even a setting for it!

I think on an Occulus Rift, you can't use Steam VR to draw out your space, instead using the Occulus version. There was a guide that may have been posted here on how to play the game sitting down that had the Steam VR drawing room info in it but I could not for the life of me find out how to set that up in Steam VR. I even searched Steam's forums where other people mentioned it but couldn't figure out why. So I assume it's due to the Occulus software because my son has a Vive and he has the option in the settings of Steam VR

Sure, the way the Valve developer plays the game in the locomotion video at the top is a good example. From the video and my thoughts on VR review:

- Put the game on easy, play through the same area's several times so you can capture good demo footage, see the above gun battles by the crane are almost choreographed.

- Number #1, do not juggle banana's, staplers, throw shit around and be a retard for 10-15 minutes because VR. I want to find out about the game, not watch derpo's first steps in VR.

- Also the 2D VR counterpart does not capture everything that you see in VR therefore jerky head movements and not centering the headset on what your talking about is a real pain as a viewer. You need to avoid the awful shaky cam movie feel as much as possible.

- Edit the material to reinforce what your talking about, if you want to talk about the gun mechanics, show the interaction that can be had and edit it so you get your message across clearly and as quickly as possible. This is very important and some people get it right, If your calling out texture pop-in > back it up with 2-3 4-5second examples, aim to be less subjective i guess.

That's what I quite liked about the playthrough I watched, the guy got all the immersion breaking nonsense out of his system in the first 10 minutes, after that he just focused on gameplay.

Also, most importantly, no commentary. Nothing more frustrating than some twitch streamer spouting memes every .5 seconds.

niiice. Some VR owners were triggered by the idea of a mod like this "wah wah not how it's supposed to be played REEEEEE"
Most of us just want to see how the story plays out and fuck around with source 2, I ain't shelling out $1060 for the full experience bruh.

Aww Yeah

When people say ‘that’s not how it’s supposed to be played’ they mostly mean the game will suck and not be the revolution that is in VR. All the physical interactions will be gone in 2d, the ‘horror’ elements, the fights will be boring and spread out with too few enemies , the pacing will feel off. The game design in VR vs 2d is completely different and will never translate well from one another.

The story? I guess if you care that much about the story...
