After their first abysmal WRC 5, the mediocre 6, and the passable 7, this one...actually feels like a proper-ish rally game. It's easier than Dirt Rally 2.0 with physics that lean towards the simcade world, but the old floaty handling is finally gone and stages are well-designed, requiring attention with their bumps, gaps and imperfections. The offline career mode seems pretty solid (looking at you, Codemasters), dynamic weather is nice as well and does affect the driving style.
It still has many issues though: the console graphics are always there in all their glory (though at least it runs well on my potato), there's poor LOD management and the virtual steering wheel's animations come straight from the late 90s, but the result overall isn't too jarring. The default values for the derpad are quite awkward too - things got better for me as soon as I dropped the steering saturation down to 80%, sensitivity to -10, and upped the deadzone to ~20. Not great, not terrible, but it's definitely a big improvement in my opinion worth the isodemo kindly offered by Sweeney.

Playing this with a wheel and it drives like a boat. Past tense. Quick uninstall. The game looks nice but the driving physics are miles behind dirt rally 2.

Yeah, the ideal for me would be having Dirt Rally 2.0's satisfying physics with this game's contents and offline career mode (quite well done this year, close-ish to F1's). Alas though the rally gods won't allow it *shakes fist*

I tried this for a few Rally drives. It’s a really poor experience overall. Driving is not smooth, graphics are poor, the UI is just annoying (cursor jumping to popup menu, etc. )
Despite its flaws, Dirt Rally 2 is still a far superior experience.

Unfortunately, this series truly suffers the obsolete clunky KT tech that affects both the immersion and driving, despite the various improvements and Epic payolas over the years. It's a shame because there are several aspects that are done right like the actual stages (genuinely good in WRC8), the dynamic weather effects with strong winds/storms and puddles causing aquaplaning, the career mode with micromanagement, and even the simcade handling works for what it is.
Thing is, when it comes to the actual physics, damage system and sense of immersion overall Dirt Rally 2.0 is simply on another planet. That's why I hate Codemasters' way of handling the franchise, they clearly have the best rally simulation on the market which could be the ultimate experience...yet, their laziness and TRIPPLE CAUTION SAMIR practices get in the way

Well I like, Rally 2.0, but the DLC policy is just The deluxe edition was supposed to include all content, but now there is "super deluxe 2.0" for "seasons" 3.0 and 4.0 (everything includes a ".0" ). I really like the driving experience.

So WRC 8's Season Pass has magically turned into WRC 9
They've announced WRC 10 and WRC 11 as well (for the nextnextgen derpsole hardware), hopefully with a new engine that doesn't reek of mid 2000s.

Quote: | Codemasters has signed an exclusive five-year deal to develop and publish games based on the FIA World Rally Championship series.
The firm will also handle the esports tournaments associated with the franchise.
Codemasters will release WRC games for console, PC and mobile platforms, including annual titles that will run between 2023 and 2027.
Codemasters has experience in working with licensed racing IP, having developed the official F1 racing game series since 2009. It's also well established in the rally genre with its Dirts series of games -- a continuation of its famous Colin McRae Rally franchise -- and the firm is planning to launch Dirt 5 later this year.
The UK company says that despite the WRC deal, it remains committed to the Dirt series going forward: "The Dirt Rally team is already working on their next project ahead of the WRC agreement in 2023."
The first WRC game from Codemasters will arrive in its financial year ending March 2024. |

Took them long enough, there are still three Kylotonn WRC games to come out and then we can rejoice..maybe.
The recipe for success is a simple one on paper: take Dirt Rally's main men, give 'em carte blanche and the updated tools for a pure undiluted simulative game in the style of their previous titles with no game-y bling-bling-powered bullshits, add a proper offline experience/Career mode, et voilà . There are so many interesting and demanding stages from the WRC that have never been represented in DR (Sardegna, Turkey, Japan, Portugal and so on), it's all very intriguing. Will Codemasters royally fuck it up? Only time will tell

Yeah, it's a lazy WRC 8 re-release with three new locations and that's it. WRC 10 will be the "nextgen" version, probably just RTX stuff slapped onto the ancient engine zero_fucks_given mode
(By the way, WRC 9 is already available on the Rin Store)

Some peeps are saying ffb and physics have been improved, others are saying they are the same as in wrc8. I would really want to know if they improved or not as the cars felt really lose and weigthless in wrc8. Anyone ?

The handling and physics feel about the same here, still on the simcade side and more forgiving than DR2, but I'm currently stuck with a 360 gamepad so it's difficult to tell whether they've actually improved the FFB or not. There's a lot of shameless Fanatec in-game advertising so perhaps that's a factor to take into account too when it comes to wheel support/feedback
The technical aspects are basically unchanged (including the rather stiff cockpit animations with the low wheel rotation), though at least the post-processing is less overdone and they've added dynamic weather conditions. The stages' design, career and weather effects are still the highlights of the series, it's a shame that as per tradition the driving experience can't properly shine because of the technical obsolescence and the decision not to pursue a full-sim approach.

Man, WRC 9 is rancid. It runs at 60 fps, but the frame time is all over the place None of the settings seem to make any change in that regard. Absolute trash. Kyloderp.

I don't know if it can help (it's probably too late anyway) but in my case I managed to fix that annoying micro-stuttering with the combo Borderless Fullscreen + VSync on + 60fps limiter set via RTSS. WR8 had the same issue(s), they just don't care

Ugh, I already deleted. I actually changed it from borderless to fullscreen, and had vsync on. Anyway, I don't think it's really worth it, the game is just the same shit as last year.

Once again it's practically WRC8/9 re-re-released with more locations (Estonia, Croatia, Belgium, Spain + historic cars/tracks) and not much else besides some minor tweaking, same modus operandi as Milestone and all the other masters of the reskinning. At least it seems they've dropped the Sweeneylusivity.
They'll likely never use a modern engine at this point since it's supposed to run on the old consoles as well (including the bloody Switch) and they'll lose the WRC license at the end of next year.

the funniest part of it is that the 10 launches earlier on steam than 9

The game isn't bad to drive, but what kills it for me is the retarded engine and it's 10m rolling LOD. Even of "next" "gen" consoles, it's fucking the same. It seems to be hardcoded in the engine itself, and I couldn't tweak it on PC. It's ridiculous.
