Nice, I've been meaning to watch Mushi shi and NHK was good. I remember my sister liked Nodame Cantabile a lot but I myself never got around to watching it.

1 and 2 are still amazing.

The reason why I have NC on my list is because 15 years ago when I was watching anime 24/7, NC was consistently the highest rated series on anidb, and that site is full of snobs who actually rate things as a 5/10 if it's mediocre or just unimpressive. And the only things back then that managed to dislodge it for a couple weeks were new community-darling animes (like Death Note, Haruhi Suzumiya, or Mushi-shi), but would go back up after a while.

And 15 years later it's still stitting at #6, so I'm intrigued. Razz

Oh and Mushi-shi is amazing. Very laid back, incredibly fascinating, with minimalistic but still amazing music.

I remember LOVING the original series, and never got around to watching the rest as they came out at a time when I wasn't really into anime any more. Perfect time to remedy the situation. Very Happy

NHK? Can we please stop being too lazy to abbreviate the shit out of every single title?

Anyway, I found info that Made in Abyss: Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep (ie. "season 2") will be released in Japan September 25th, 2020. Then it'll take a while before someone actually translates it properly (as opposed to the shitty auto-translate shit that is released) alternatively wait for the US/Euro-release but that'll take time since it involves voice acting (which I'm not interested in).

It's called "Welcome to the NHK". I assumed it's a well known enough anime to not need the rest of the title. Razz

Well, I've never heard of it. Anyway, checked out the plot and it's not my taste. I want escapism (scifi, fantasy, combinations of those with other genres etc.).

Welcome to the NHK

7.5/10

Yep, it was pretty great too.

I could relate to the main character in so many ways, but not completely. As a kid, and even in my early 20s I was somewhat similar to Sato. Nowhere near as bad, but I could definitely see my old self in him in some ways.

Thankfully I never had suicidal ideation, but social anxiety is definitely an old friend of mine. Razz

I can even relate to the part about the pyramid scheme. I also had an old school friend of mine who tried to reel me into an MLM scheme when I was desperate for money at one point (emphasis on "tried"). Very Happy

This isn't an anime about dreams coming true, hard work paying off, or starcrossed lovers finding each other in the end. Another deep dive into social and mental issues, and I loved it. Razz

The parts that bugged me were all the blaming stuff on conspiracies. But then again, I wasn't as far gone as Sato, and I can see some loner not interested in science and scientific scepticism go down that road. For me, it was just too foreign a concept.

Now on to finishing the rest of Mushi-shi. Razz

new show from Triggger

Quote:
We're excited to announce that together with an acclaimed Japan-based animation company, Studio Trigger, and the world's leading streaming entertainment service, Netflix, we're working on a new original anime series set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077!

CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.

The series will premiere in 2022.

Mushishi Tokubetsu Hen: Hihamu Kage

8/10

God damn, that was just as relaxing, fascinating, and zen-like experience as I remembered. This 40 minute OVA is perfect to whet my appetite for the proper Season 2. Very Happy

And that music, hnnng, it was good to be reminded why it was the only complete soundtrack that I took time and effort to track down back then. Traditional Japanese instruments mixed with the occasional piano, guitar and flute. Very simple, straightforward melodies, that go perfectly with very simple, straightforward stories.

I still fondly remember Kaze no Tamakura.

Bounen no Xamdou (Xam'd: Lost Memories)

5.5/10

Aka how a show with a lot of promise ends up turning into a boatload of wasted potential. It was made by studio Bones specially for the PlayStation Network launch back in 2008 showing the amount of money pumped into it given how good it looks even 12 years later. Still, it's worth a watch just to see how it was filled with cool framing shots like these:

1 and 2 are still amazing.

Thank you Frant! Finally getting to continue one of my absolute favourite shows Very Happy isn't this part 2 though?

Mushishi is done though as far as i know. All the content has been adapted, so if there is ever something new it's anime original.

Well, it's Part 3 of the movies (the first two movies were compilations of the first season episodes while this movie is a continuation from season 1 (movies part 1 & 2). Made in Abyss 2 is coming as well (I guess it's the upcoming season 2 but no info about when it's being released yet). This new movie seems to sit between Season 1 and the upcoming Season 2.

It seems several of the 2019/2020 anime series are getting movie releases instead of new episode seasons this and next year.

Kimetsu no Yaiba (Movie, October 16th, 2020)
Fate/Grand Order: Shinsei Entaku Ryouiki Camelot 1 – Wandering; Agateram (Movie, December 5th, 2020)

...and a couple I've forgot..

Meanwhile the VR isekai SAO is getting a reboot (ala Fullmetal Alchemist remake)
Sword Art Online: Progressive (reboot, 2021)

Hmm, it's been so long since I watched Made in Abyss that I wonder if there's a refresher of the first season or if I should just rewatch season 1 before watching the new movie.

My experiences with these movies is that they expect you to know the story and won't recap. Probably best to rewatch it and why shouldn't you? It's absolutely epic. I think i'll do that too

I'm downloading the first two movies. They're slightly changed (little things removed, little things added) but basically it's the first season put together in two movies. No more skipping 13 intro's and switching to the next episode after every ~23-24 minutes.

Please give some feedback on it if you recall the series. I've never trusted those movies as i've seen them as nothing but money grabs. I've always believed them to be rushed and skipping important things. Berserk is one such example. Those movies totally butchered the story by removing more or less any bonding Guts had to the band of the hawk which totally butchered the climax of the arc.

It's so sad that Berserk, one of the best mangas of all time, still didn't get a proper anime adaptation.
The closest was the first show from 1998, and even that one covers only some parts of the first arc. All the other attemps were just fucking disgusting and insulting.

I think the original anime did a pretty good job at it. Some parts were cut, but none that felt important to the story. Charlotte being attempted raped by her father is just a shock factor thing and wasnt necessary by any means.

It was still very censored and didnt go all the way into fucked up territory like the manga, which is part of Berserk's bleak atmosphere.

Okay, finished watching all three Made in Abyss movies... and it's on a WHOLE DIFFERENT level to the usual stuff. Damn......

Made in Abyss - Dawn of the Deep Soul - 9.7/10

Tear-jerking, sad, exciting, exhilarating, warm, horrible... everything. And so beautifully made and perfectly fitting music. Now I'm so sad that I have to wait for the continuation but all in all it was a masterpiece.

@Stormwolf: I felt the first two movies worked just fine. I don't know if there are any particular details that were changed (from what I read the only changes made happened in the opening/early part) and the flow felt perfectly natural.

Good that it flowed naturally. There is about 2 episodes cut duration wise so there is something lost naturally. It's always hard in these cases to decide, but i'll see the episodes if the movies didn't add anything absolutely meaningful.

Sure it did. The only things i can recall that was different was the charlotte scene and the final sex scene with Griffith where in the manga you kinda wondered how much caska actually hated what was currently going on Laughing
