And that ending, well you know the writers failed when a ton of people are dissatisfied with that ending.
Spoiler:
"i'm here for revenge but revenge bad so ok i won't kill you but let's just ignore the hundreds i've massacred to get here because your life is the only one that matters"
Since this is the story they wanted to tell, they should maybe have us play as Abby for the first half of the game, let players learn more about her and her friends and start caring for them, then only reveal that flashback from 4 years back right before she goes golfing, and then have the hunt for Abby be the second part of the game.
But they sure have brave writers, what with forcing people to play as someone they probably dislike for a good chunk of the game.
Story failed for me. Especially that ending. I mean, yes, I get that revenge is bad but how it eventually played out was so hamfisted.
Spoiler:
why would killing abby be the right choice? you play the game with 2 characters, you see each others perspective on things, you see no side is right, so why would they ignore everything they showed you only to go ahead and get your revenge? it dosent make any sense. its an eye for an eye.
people are mad because they missed the point of the main theme, they mad couse they fav character died and there wasnt justice, they just ignored abbys story like half the game was for nothing, ellie and joel did horrible things, horrible things got to them.
having to play as abby first wouldnt have this much shock value, to me it makes more interesting to find out why she did it.
Spoiler:
It's because of all the other people who you kill to get to that point. At that point, what's one more death? You've already murdered hundreds of people who also have their own families who are probably now out for revenge lol.
It's just bad writing. RDR2 wrote a neat revenge not cool story that worked with the game. I was much more satisfied in dying to help John instead of going back for the cash and revenge on Micah or Dutch.
Seeing Sadie and how she was pretty much driven just by revenge was a better warning of how revenge is senseless.
If they had written it better, and given it a proper sequence that would work with the game, then you'd probably see less people complaining about the game.
Anyway vurt one part of the leak is wrong, and Abby is not a transgenre. So your hate isn't justified for this
My hate has clearly never been about trangenderism, i have no problem with that as long as its well written, as long as its something that feels natural and should be there.
So it's even more stupid then, if true, what's the evidence there i wonder. In the scene where you can see her side ""boobs"" (pecks) it certainly does not look like a woman (no, not even like just a buff woman), and it's certainly implied that the gender is leaning towards male, giant adams apple etc.
The amount of steroids a woman needs to get her hands on to get that buff in a post apocalyptic world, no less if you think women can get naturally big like that without a giant testo boost, lol, you're an idiot and you know nothing about training or body building.
It would be stupid if its male and its going on hormones too because again, that would probably not be widely available in this setting.. so both options are almost as stupid.
Also, this is just a tiny detail, hardly a reason why i would skip the game.
It's just a shitty game, with badly written characters and a story that never pays off and makes no sense, and a troll hungry Cuckmann who made sure to release it near father's day too.. soooo edgy! smash the patriarchy! he's a dumb sjw, doing games for other angry SJW's on Twitter and shill media (who he knows will rate it 10/10, in fear of otherwise getting labeled "homophobic")

@StEFaN7 Shock value doesn't make good stories, it makes for less than mediocre horror movies.
I would not rate this as "shock value", it's much more like "troll value" or "scam value" if you have followed the game closely... even the trailers are edited in a certain way to lure the gamers thinking its something its not, Cuckmann dreaming of tricking every "toxic male" (in his mind) into buying his little hate letter to the fans. There are videos that goes through this part of the scam, where e.g Joel says one thing in the trailer, but in the actual game its Abby who says it.
The revenge story part is really all about Cuckmann himself getting his personal revenge on the patriarchy, getting his chance to piss on the "toxic male" fans. He must think he's so smart, so hip, almost like a real woke Hollywood producer..
Spoiler:
self-inserting himself - look-a-like dude - spitting on Joel's dead body kind of seals the deal btw...its not a subtle thing he's doing.
Not gonna bother you anymore though, sick of discussing it, i just find it sad to see how clueless some people are (maybe i should just be happy for you for not caring or for preferring to live under a rock.. it's not like dwelling into this shit is a lot of fun).

It's false advertisement. Apparently they replaced Joel's model from a flashback with his present version to mislead players and they went as far as to create a new cutscene to have us thinking Joel will join Ellie on this journey. I was still skeptical because I didn't see why Ellie would go on a rampage for Dina.
People are oblivious of the 180 degree change in the character's personality. Joel's cautiousness is gone and Ellie is a psycho. I would go as far as to say this game was written for the media and not for the gamers/fans.
And now it's about Father's day ? What's next ?
I can follow your points (and some are genuinely interesting) up to a point but there's a fine line between criticizing the game and going into your own fantasies and your continuous appeal to motive - unless you're a telepath or some shit, or got some hard evidence of the ludicrous shit you're saying.

Finished the game a few days ago with a playthrough time of just under 32 hours but that would probably be a bit less if I hadn’t turned off the hinting system. Started doing new game plus on survivor difficulty but I got a bit bored and really can’t be bothered so soon. Overall I thought it was pretty awesome of course but given the backlash over the story I do agree it could have and should have been better but at the end of the day it is what it is.
The last of us part 2 delivered a great game play, graphics, and mechanics, but the story was extremely bad, they killed off our favorite character and forced us to use the character that killed off Joel and we were supposed to connect to abbey throughout half of the game, and the main character isn't even ellie, we want ND to remake the game with the scenes they provided at every trailer with Joel and not model swap him from flashbacks, we need a remake for this game because this was a massive disrespect for every fan that waited 7 years for this sequel, and we need to get what we deserved and it was not this game.
I am 32 hours in atm and maybe another 5 hrs from the end so I cant comment on ending so far. Its taking long cuz i am playing on survivor difficulty and combing through everything. Damn the encounters are so tense on this difficulty, it really forces you to improvise on the go and make fast decisions, one mistake and you're dead. Gameplay is definitely great and far better than in the first game.

From his writing style I would assume that guy wasn't even born when TLOU 1 came out.
Finished it last night, also after 32 hours. The gameplay felt engaging for every last encounter, the way you use the environment and every tool available to barely keep the advantage can make you feel like a badass, especially towards the end. I loved that gunshot hits actually throw you back or even on the ground so tanking damage and rushing towards the enemy in a straight line is never an option.
From a technical standpoint it’s probably as good as a game on the PS4 can be, some of the vistas were simply gorgeous, the lighting effects, the attention to detail… music and sound were top notch with the voice acting being yet again one of the best in the business, as is expected from ND.
Spoiler:
The story had me hooked till the end. The way it plays with the age old trope of murderous revenge cycles and has you play as the "villain“ to get some perspective… I replayed TLOU1 some days before Part II came out so Joel getting killed had an enormous impact, leaving me wanting for brutal revenge. I really needed Ellie to go on and on, no matter the cost, same as herself. But the second half of the game does an excellent job with forcing you to look at the price others had to pay for Joels selfish decision at the end of the first game. Abbys motivation for revenge is just as understandable as Ellies, maybe even more so.
Ellies final decision to let Abby live is also not out of character. The ultimate reason is of course up to speculation but the scene a few minutes later in which her last conversation with Joel shows her trying to forgive an, in her eyes, unspeakable betrayal hints strongly that her ability for forgiveness is bigger than her motivation to "complete“ her revenge. Maybe she even sees the resemblance in Abbys and Levs relationship compared to Joel and her.
Oh and btw., whoever actually thinks Abby is trans is obviously an idiot. I mean, apart from the fact that she is a frontline soldier in a brutal war and the warzone is sprinkled with freaking monsters, so maybe being as strong as possible is a bit of a recommendation, the game shows her means to getting buff literally 5 minutes into the second half of the game. But I guess to catch that you’d have to play it and not judge it out of your ass.
I finished it. This review summarizes my feeling very nice. No spoilers
At first, I was fueled by leaks and kinda disliked it in the beginning but oh my god... It is absolutely incredible. The arc the characters go through. Abby is one of best characters I've seen in a video game. Not only her arc is cathartic and brutal but she punches zombies in the face.
The game managed to 180 on me and I was SURE I would hate it and especially new characters. After 25 hours I am floored. This is such a rollercoaster of emotions.\
One thing for sure - it's a bit long and the pacing is not good. Especially in first part of the game.
I think a lot of the hate comes from leaks and people gripping to them and not playing the game. It's one of those rare games You need to stick to and just play it. Give it a chance. it manipulates You and for me it worked amazingly. Fuck, I wanted to sell tthe damn game after first evening of playing. I even called my friend and said how crap it is... only to call him yesterday and explain how wrong I was. I don't remember this ever happening to me. Disclaimer - I also really liked Death stranding (also some bad pacing and way too much exposition there).
And that's just story and characters. The graphics and audio are undeniably fantastic. And the combat is very visceral and brutal. I liked it.
It's 9/10 for me because of some pacing issues
It is now very popular to hate on this big new AAA game for "wronging" the last game. But if it was just another simple adventure of the main characters from last game, it would not work. They created a very high budget, ambitious new AAA game, which has no microtransactions, is very long, beautiful and that's a rare thing nowadays

Thats a good review. Its one of the many I watched a before the game released.
Same guy has another review with spoilers for those who completed it or just don't care about spoilers
Just watched this too which was a long but cool video

Many people hate things that make others excited, that's not new. The more hype the game has, the more positive reviews, the larger the hate group. Usually. And in any case, what is it with people and getting attached to imaginary characters to such a high extent that 7 years later they just can't let go? People who play this game without that baggage, might still dislike it but at least you won't see the embarrassing shit storm going on. There are enough plot holes and conveniences in the plot to whine about without trash like "They deserved better Rewrite the story for my taste Failure of storytelling because it's not the story I wanted! "

For fucks sake, that's embarrassing.
Exactly. I am very happy seeing big studios develop a new, brave story. Especially in this risk averse industry even if it might be flawed.
Like Death Stranding - it is flawed but such a new, interesting concept for story and gameplay. so fresh

You two are taking the extreme examples without considering the middle ground of users with valid criticisms. They might not say what you echo about the game but they do make sense without falling into either group of getting overly attached to the characters or just jumping on the hate wagon because it's cool. It's this group of people who are best able to share their thoughts without going berserk over why a particular thing happened or fanboying/girling like crazy over certain things or aspects. Basically the balanced opinions are the best at giving such insights.

What is there to consider? These are normal people with different tastes, who played the game and came to their own opinion about the story. They won't go on metacritic to give obviously well made game 1/10 in a childish tantrum.
Basically my concern boils down to studios shying away from experimentation in story driven games to avoid "controversies" that might hurt the bottom line. It's a business and PR is king. A good example is Death Stranding. A publisher invested AAA budget into an experimental idea and we got a pretty unique game out of it. Instead of appreciating the attempt (which realistically wasn't perfect) to bring new experience to the hobby, and discuss what worked and what didn't, brigades of fucktards stormed metacritic and twitter to shit all over the game, and just like in TLOU2 case, to directly insult the people behind the games.
I didn't watch trailers other than the very first one and wasn't exposed to any leaks before hand and loved this from beginning to end. It was heart wrenching but so worth it for me. What a ride.... incredible.
There are perfectly valid and understandable reasons to not like this game but most of the hate out there is just ridiculous.
There is a fucking change.org petition to change the story, of course. lmao
This is so stupid...

Indeed, what a dumbfuck. What are they gonna do? Walk to the store and get their $60 back?
