Got the quest. The damn thing is excellent. It's actually not that heavy a pretty comfortable. Screen quality , colors and black levels all are better than S. headphones fit over it no problem too. It feels like quality and the hand tracking is neat af.
The link stutters as fuck though when using the 3 meters charging cable. Looking for fixes
I stream over WIFI and it works great. The charging cable? The cable that comes with it is not suitable for connecting to your PC

Is half life Alyx looking better in the quest over the rift S?
Or stutters too much ?
I don't get any stuttering
So you can play HL Alyx wireless with the Quest in wifi without any downside ?!
Yes. Works even better than link
I cannot get used to being able to freely rotate and still use snap turning.
It's kinda mind blowing how good of a job quest + virtual desktop does. The lag is really small and image quality very good. The screen itself is better than S for sure. Just some minor compression and banding here and there because of streaming. I think beatsaber players would be better of playing on the quest itself but for other games, the lag is totally acceptable. It might even be less than link somehow
Have to say - If I was an index owner and was looking at all those quest people playing it wirelessly with inky pitch black in those flashlight scenes.... I would be kinda pissed

I got Quest and Rift S, the Virtual Desktop works crazy good. It's definitely better than the Link with the original cable. But compared to Rift S you can definitely notice the difference, it's clearer and alot more sharper then the Quest and you have absolutely no latency, you can feel a tiny bit of latency with the Quest and also notice a little difference in Hz.
Is 390 euros for a brand new (boxed) Oculus Quest 64GB a good price that "I should jump on it" ?
yeah it's great. I don't think it is very much blurrier than S (it is a bit) but You can play wirelessly, have pitch black blacks which are great in Alyx etc.
Quest also is easy to fit any headphones onto (like koss porta pro) and even the built in headband headphones are a bit better than S.
Also, I am faster to put Quest on head and find the sweet spot. With Rift S, it took a bit more fiddling and the headset is wobbly. Quest is heavier but it's not that big of a concern for me.
On Quest You can play all pc oculus games, steam games. All wired or wireless and then also quest games like tea for god which is mind bending.
All in all - S is very good and kinda more hassle free. But Quest offers more and good black levels

If I have no vr experience (apart from trying out beat saber on the vive) will the lower refresh rate bother me on the quest (obviously by comparison to S)? Is the Oculus link cable out or it's just enough to get some recommend third party cable?
A Fisherman's Tale... what a game.. I highly suggest you play this one for a unique experience. Kudos to the Devs for creativity on this one. Still rocking the CV1 everyday..

It has cool concept but I could barely stand the damn yapping all the time

personally, I find 80hz to work surprisingly well. I use an index at higher refresh rates regularly and it doesn't bother me.
you also have the upside of having lower target fps so you can use more supersampling for a clearer picture as opposed to 90, 120 or 144 hz, or just enjoy an easier time maintaining fluid fps.
I used some cheaper third party usb cable that was confirmed to work on the forums and had no issues. the official one is out but expensive at 79$

I listened to KillerCrocker and bought my first Oculus device (Quest) after using a PSVR since launch and I was HEAVILY disappointed by terrible god rays, specially in "black"games (like Star Wars)...
Also it's not confortable at all, and not easy to put it in (shitty straps, compared to PSVR mechanical way).
Also didn't like you couldnt move forward/backward the lenses at all compared to PSVR... Also bottom of the HMD, i can "light"/myself while looking down, while PSVR really makes you more immersed.
Only good thing about Quest over PSVR : PC Compatibility, wireless, OLED, better resolution, better tracking, no camera, roomscale (and cameras ON when exiting the area, really nice feature)... all these good stuff are IMO really killed by god rays, freaking god rays. Also screen door effect isn't as good as PSVR (but it's not too bad either).
All in all, disappointed for a 450 euros device, but i'll keep it. Maybe KC has some tips to make it better for me ?
Also people who say "PSVR is terrible, Oculus is da best" never tried PSVR for sure. I'd rather take a resolution hit and not having god rays than higher rez and shitty god rays. Honestly Blood & Truth on PSVR is a bit blurry but oh fuck, immersion is at its best.
Right and that also. But to be honest I think i'd rather have wires and no god rays... God rays... are irritating at best !
CV1 - a lot of god rays
Rift S - almost no god rays
Quest - almost as good as S when it comes to god rays imo

Well, no VR is perfect at this point I guess and any product has major disadvantage, though the quest seems to most ideal for now, of course, you can always wait a bit till PSVR2 will come out or something.
I do hope the Sony VR will be wireless and better resolution but It will be at least a year after PS5 launch.
But KC how can you ignore them ? It's like the lenses are constantly dirty.. really weird feeling... specially when there are blacks
Do you wear glasses? I've noticed the god rays are more visible when I have my glasses on, due to a tiny bit of light bleeding through the sides where the googles press on the glasses' handles.
I can see more god rays and a bit of reflection on the inside of the lenses. When I press the foam around the handles to make a tighter fit - it's better, surprisingly. Maybe the reflections amplify the perception of the god rays.

Why have I not noticed this ?
Is the headset strapped closely enough to your face and IPD is correctly set ?
I can see a little bit of godray's but not so much that it bothers me.
I do have the Rift S also and I have not noticed any godray's there.
Has anybody owned both the Quest and the Index and can elaborate on the experience with Half Life Alyx for each of those? My Index order is ready for shipping and I have until sunday to pull the trigger on it but I am really not sure if I should do it.
I already had the Quest last year and sold it because I thought it was kind of uncomfortable to wear. But I could get it new for 400€ and I found some modding guides to make it more comfortable to wear. Now the Index is nearly triple the price, I know it‘s the superior headset but is it THAT much better?

No no glasses. I press the foam a lot too, it's better but still not good... also it doesn't feel confortable at all to press the foam a lot either :/

Seems from what i read Rift S is better than Quest for rays.. and yeah i set IPD all the way to the right (59) else it's terrible... I tried to strap it in every way possible but i always see god rays
@Kater Mikesch : can you link me your modding guides ? I also find it unconfortable at best, the foam isn't really fitting well on my face at all

I've never used psvr but I found S Halo strap wobbly and kinda annoying to find sweet spot.
As for quest. I find it comfortable similarly to cv1. Be sure to adjust top strap too. The back strap should be on the lower part of back of Your head. With that I just put it on like googles and don't need to set it much more.
Set ipd right and You can move lenses further away with glasses spacer although if You don't wear glasses, it's pointless to do so.
Believe me. God Rays are the best on quest when it comes to oled headsets. Rift S has a bit less god Rays but that's because there is no pitch black background like on quest.
I really don't think like I am lying here. I like the quest screen the most. Fitting too. It's just a tad heavy and need good back strap adjustement

I've just tried Half Life Alyx using the latest oculus beta app to use "Link mode" with the charging cable (USB 2)... people say the Quest isn't using more than USB2 anyway even though the real link cable is just an USB 3.. anyway, I tried it, and it worked wonders. No latency at all.
You could see it was a bit "streaming blurry" but it was really minor and honestly it looked much better than what I expected.
Also for some reason I barely notice god rays in HL Alyx, I guess cuz the game is bright.
Speaking of which, the game is really bright, and colors dont look vibrant at all, as if everything was washed out... I googled the issue, people say it's the Oculus Link mode that doesn't stream as good as it should, and to use Virtual Desktop...
But meh do i wanna pay $20 for wireless crap ? My router sucks even though it's 5GHz i dunno what to hope....
HL:Alyx i'd say was most fun ive had playing a PC game in quite a while, need more high quality VR games. Has anyone tried the Vive wireless addon and can comment on it being any good?
Unsure. It's WMR, and that is always a bit worrying. The Tested preview of a prototype model looks fairly promising, but those controllers... dear god they look ridiculously oversizsed.
