Netflix has halted production on The Witcher for two weeks, making it the first major TV show produced in the UK to be grounded by the chaos being caused by coronavirus.
The Henry Cavill fantasy drama is made in-house by Netflix and is filmed at Arborfield Studios, which is around 40 miles west of London. Production crew were told in an email last night about the decision to pause production, but they will continue to be paid by Netflix during the filming hiatus.
Well they still do have money to burn. \o/
Now we're gonna watch to see a weight difference, hair difference, skin difference in between shots to figure out when the hiatus happened. \o/

Shit I didn't think of that. This is gonna be like searching for the hidden cut in a long take, and missing whatever is actually happening
Finally finished it. It was pretty good but a few episodes were a bit slow, especially when it's not about the Geralt. 7.5/10.
The forced diversity is cringe obviously but i can't be arsed to even roll my eyes at it.. yes we get it, like 99.9% of the population you're not racists and you feel you really have to show that. ok. fine.
Why do you feel the diversity is forced? Maybe this is the way the director likes it. Or do you really believe a made up species in a made up story is supposed to be a specific color?
Or do you really believe a made up species in a made up story is supposed to be a specific color?
Why wouldn't I? It's not how they are portrayed in the book. The books has 2 non white people (Tea and Vea ), though both are not portrayed as african/african american looking.
You seriously mean it wouldn't matter if e.g Frodo and some of the other hobbits in LOTR were portrayed by africans or african americans? You'd feel right at home with that, even if you read the books perhaps 20+ times (like in my case)? I highly doubt that.
In the case of Tolkien he borrowed heavily from icelandic and Germanic norse mythologi. Sarpowski is obviously inspired by European Folklore, so white people makes sense (and that's all there is to it.)
The argument can easily by reversed too. Why would it be important to change e.g a Tolkien LOTR movie or a Witcher TV-series, especially if color and races aren't important or doesn't even exist (the anti-racist argument). The diversity is very big in both of these worlds, but it does not stem from various skin tones. Races are something else here.
Another argument would be; if a movie/TV-series is about African mythology and it's almost a 50/50 split of white and black people, do you seriously think black people who knows these themes inside and out would be happy? Obviously not, and it has nothing to do with "then all black people hates white people if they can't accept it!!!1"

Awful argument. Then nothing matters. Geralt could be a green haired 15 year old punk rocker from 1980's or a 95 year old lesbian wheel-chair bound black woman, "because its made up, it doesn't matter". No. It's really not how any of this works and you know that.
But again, i can't really be arsed, for this TV-series i expected it (since we knew it would be this way), and i've only read 1 of the books (didn't love it). For something like Tolkien, i would be really angry, i'd absolutely boycott it if we had gotten black gollum with heavy african american accent or Trans-Sam(tm).
I understand what you think now, thanks for the extensive post. To answer your overall question (does it matter if character X is black/white) shortly, no it wouldn't matter to me what color a character in let's say LotR is. Frodo could've been black, wouldn't matter much to me. Geralt is a good cast for me in this show, not because he's white though. I just had this character in my head after playing the games, I did not think Geralt HAD to be white. Would it be weird? Probably, but if the black guy playing Geralt did a great job I wouldn't care. There's a certain physique a guy like Geralt requires, skin color is not part of it.
As for a fantasy setting with only black people, I think it shouldn't matter what skin color the actors have when such a thing is filmed.
In case of Geralt, his skin color is part of the lore. If you as a writer don't care about these things, you're better off writing a new franchise instead of abusing an existing one.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.
Origin of the people in these stories are part of the lore, and they are not Africans, they stem from nordic culture and nordic / european myths/legends.
If Black Panther would have had 50% white people as part of their black community it also wouldn't make sense. Even if it's not something which is based of reality.
If Ragnar in Vikings was a black person (or an Asian, a woman...) it also wouldn't make sense, even if the actor would be great..
Thankfully Mister_s is in minority when it comes to these progressive ideas that will ruin these stories. It's not like they will stop with skin color either, it's not how these people work. Many of them (not ALL) are political activists, so what you're gonna get is political ideas and agendas and it will be the main focus, not having characters or stories that makes sense and feels real.
Also, isn't it a rather petty way to act "inclusive"? i mean if all you do is give black people less important roles anyways? This is why you can tell these people are so fucking fake. I would actually have respected them more if they did go all the way with e.g black Geralt, then you're for real and you are truly progressive. I obviously would not respect them for ruining the lore and its not something i would have watched, but yeah, i can respect someone who dares going all in with his ideas, that's brave and real.
How is BP or Ragnar in Vikings in any way comparable to a fantasy story? I guess we disagree, I can live with that. I understand what you mean though, I'm not saying you're wrong or racist, such things just don't really bother me.
Isnt BP a fantasy story?? Pretty sure it is As for Ragnar, much of that can be disputed, and it is.. In Sweden we already have progressive ideas that the Vikings worshiped Allah, it was in all the major news papers here.
If it continues at this rate, much of history will be erased. This is very typical for extremists, Nazis does this with WW2 for example, the parts they don't think portray the nazis in a very favorable way.. bit OT, but it does tie in somewhat with erasing the origin of history or stories.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
