This one is from the previews the true successor of the Master of Orion 2. I for one am waiting for some time for this game. It promises to be a bigger and better MOO2, so that could only be a good thing. Let's see if the actual game is as good as it sounds...

THe original was very, very addictive. Great game, they can't really go wrong with that base I would imagine.

lookin forward to this one. hopefully it will rival civ4 in sheer awesomeness along with a bit of graphical goodness. never got into the whole space colonization thing but this looks like an excellent one to begin with.

I think all battles are auto-resolved

Definetly will try this one
Since this is my favorite genre for the one asking here are the few title you should look for :
GALCIV 2 - Not tried yet of course, though it seems easy to grasp but very hard to master. Game time seems straightforward and with a very good ai . No multiplayer.
All battle autoresolved. In a way you may consider it similar to civilizations in space (with the due differencies of course)
MOO2 - The ancestor (leaving Moo1) , it is stiill one of the best out there, great depth, great design of the ships (it seems a lot better than galciv 2 and it's 9 year old ...) , lot of customization . all the battles you can fight manually and thousands of options and way to reach victory.. in a word it is STILL a fantastic game
MOO3 - Out of the box a piece of crap not worth of it's name.
However it seems due to some recent fan-made addon it has become playable at least.. if i were you though i wouldn't bother with it
Space Empires 4 - The game for the hardcore gamer. Very hard to grasp , manual or auto combat. Extensive ship design and , most important, dozens of mods which can radically change the game and make it totally different.
For instance i've tried Star Trek mod (wow very cool!) , BSG galactice mod, space carrier mod, and each of them require weeks/months of plays to learn all the new technology mechanics
Space Empires 5 - The future.. due to release in the next few month it should be the TRUE heir of MOO with all the cool stuff of SE4 plus all the fancy 3d grafic we see in Gal CIV
Free Orion - A free remake of orion with very cool idea, it's in pre-alpha stage let's hope in a year or two to have a playable beta
Horizon - http://www.l3o.com/
I know very little about it.. still in development
Hope this help...
And remember if you really enjoy a game consider buy it , good game developer deserves our support.

Yea the combat is one of the things that made MOO2 so great. Auto-resolve definitely a downer if true.

Tactical combat is certainly more fun, but auto combat has worked pretty well in the Civ series so far. I don't think it'll be too much of a detriment, certainly not a make or break feature considering the scale of the game.

I've lurked for some time on the galciv forums, and from what i've read, the autocombat is actualy a smarter thing to do in a game of this type. In MOO2, although i love that game, u don't really have an option for autocombat, because the AI is so braindead that u'll lose every battle if the autoresolve is used. And since u'll do a fair bit of combating, three quarters of the time playing MOO2 is spent in the tactical view. If i wanted to play a tactical game, i would play Space Command, but since this is a 4X game, i'll stick with this formulae.
Trust me, this game is good, it's on par with CIV4 or even better( i think that the combat in CIV4 is bad at best, no strategy whatsoever, at least here u have some options regarding combat, even u won't move the pieces yourself).

I'm a little curious. Its listed as protection none..but its been out a couple days now and no sign of it. Somehow I"m thinking there must be something on it.
@chiggavelli could you do us a favour and resize/thumbnail that screenshot, you're throwing off the formatting of the page.

Well if you can download it from their site there must be some sort of activation over the internet protection.

I've read the forums and one of the devs said that the game has NO COPY PROTECTION.
If one was to download the game from a P2P site, the game could be installed and played without limitations, the S/N is completly optional.
If you wish to download patches or extra game contente then you would need a valid S/N, wich would be verified on the server side. You can also download the game from P2P, play it, and if you like the game, purchase a S/N from stardock, and insert it into the game, allowing you to access the extra content and patches.
The S/N is also needed to post scores on the online Metaverse.
So any user can create an ISO from the files downloaded/CD and post that file on the iNet, as long as it doesn't contain the S/N (preferably).
Also, the Server, when checking a S/N to see if it is valid, will check to see if that S/N isn't registered already, if it is and the person is on the same general location (country/state) it will allow the registration, if it is not (one reg in USA, another on China and so on) will not accept. You can install the game on an ulmitited number of PC's, as long as they are in the same location.

I am suprised this game is not in the 'tube' by now considering that it has no copy protection.
I doubt a 'group' will release it. Unless someone comes up with a way of fooling the 'server side' updates, which I think is impossible (it has never been done anyway. Think MMO and NWN premium mods before their CD release)
