Risk of Rain 2 announced

Quote:

But… we really want to share with people what we’ve been working so hard on, and we really can’t keep our lips sealed much longer, so we’re just gonna throw it out there with a devblog. So here it is: DevBlog #1 for Risk of Rain 2.

As a preface, I reaaaaally want to stress this: the game is still very VERY early in development.

None of the systems, artstyles, assets, or game design choices will necessarily translate to the final game. We’re learning as we go along - I hope that you guys find it as interesting to read as we do to develop.

Risk of Rain 2 is our first fully 3D project! We think that 3D allows for much deeper design spaces and more possibilities for cool gameplay. Feelings of scale and atmosphere are also much stronger. We are really happy with the core of Risk of Rain - and we’re finding it plays even better in 3D. It just won’t crash anymore.

There’s a bunch of other things I want to talk about, but I’m anxious and nervous about writing this so they’re all escaping my mind. So uh, yeah. There you go. We’ll be spending the next few devblogs talking about all the awesome systems we have in place (unified character system, item proc chains, etc) with future ones talking about our progress through development. I promise that we’re doing all these things because we think it’ll make the coolest game. And to all our fans - thanks for sticking with us. We hope you’re all as excited as we are.

I found it pretty bland, grindy and unfun at this stage. Maybe when they add more content and objectives....

NOT a fan of having to shoot an enemy for an hour before it dies. Otherwise it seemed OK i guess.

It's a great 3D adaptation of the previous game. The game only needs more content now.

Is the "buy 1 get 1 free" deal still available? I don't seem to be able to find it anymore.

Really cool of them to give a copy away for free (even though it ended now)

Good examples like these should be more in the "news" by maybe all the yongyeahs etc.

Would have bought the game long ago if not for the long EA schedule but respect for such a laidout transparent plan. Might get it along the way

There are more levels if you don't choose to go for the boss when he becomes available. But it's more about the replay value, unlocking and trying new characters.

This game is not about ending it, its about unlocks, characters, fights, challenges.

I havent finished it, ive played it a LOT lately, i love it, i rarely find games like these fun but this one is great.

risk of rain 2 isn't bad, we boot it up from time to time for coop.
just wish they had added some randomization to levels.. they're so static, undetailed and boring. i don't really understand why there are so few levels when they are so low detail.

also the unlock requirements for characters are obtuse as fuck.

It's about the roguelite elements and adapting to a continuously rising threat, not graphics. The levels work great with the gameplay and are able to accommodate the insane battles that unfold later on. Currently, there are 10 main environments and 6 secret ones, not counting Stadia's exclusivity bs.

I picked Risk of Rain 2 in its first days of Early Access and I watched it grow through a development cycle that turned a gem into a masterful rogue-like experience. I can’t stress enough how amazing this game is and if you are a fan of this subgenre, you’ll most likely have a blast with it.

Pros:
+ Each survivor provides a new play style
+ Tremendous replay value
+ Fluid combat system
+ Solid rogue-like mechanics
+ Plenty of unlockables
+ Music
+ Co-op

Cons:
– The story is difficult to follow
– Some performance issues during the peak moments of action
– Timed exclusive map for Stadia
