|
 |
Hi everyone,
I would need a bit of help/advice regarding VR headset.
Sooo while I'm waiting for 3080 to be available I might as well forfeit the whole stuff and buy a VR headset. Im thinking about the Oculus Rift S.
I will only have room to play seated.
Here is what I want to play:
-Alyx
-Walking dead FPS (saints sinners?)
-Subnautica (all the way)
-Borderlands 2 VR
-SW Squadrons
-No Mans Vr
-Porn
-Battlezone Gold
Is it worth it for these games, and can these be played seated?
Or should I wait for that stupid 3080?

index is the right option for pc gaming BUT:
I've had quest1 and it was fantastic to play Alyx fully wireless with minimal lag. No cables!
And the new Quest2 have res higher than index, 90hz and so on. Quest 2 FOR SURE.
You can play games native on it like beat saber and many ports (rtcw, quake, sidequest games). And You can connect to pc with vrdesktop to play pc games wirelessly or with usb cable.
Quest was 100% using my rtx 2070. So 3080 will be fine.
I had Rift S. It's fine but with quest 2 coming out and it's 90hz, high res... no question.

By the time your 3080 arrives, VR works without headset.

Yes it works with Type-C cable on PC and as dedicated standalone unit without cable.

Exactlly!
You can get it wired with and usb c cable or with quest 100usd 5m optical link cable for best quality.
If You have 5ghz router, You just buy and set vrdesktop on quest and play all vr pc games wirelessly.
Keep in mind that quest 2 comes out this month but 90hz and high res pc update will come later. For now it will run only 72hz and quest1 res on pc with cable. Vrdesktop uses 90hz and new res already

However Quest2 doesn´t seem to build to last, it uses way lower quality materials.

If your waiting, Id say Reverb g2.
I got the index now, and I prefer it to the Quest. Friend has the Quest.
Resolution Index wins hands down I think its the pixel layout that makes a huge difference on that 'quality', screen door in index is way less noticeable, in fast paced games the index 144hz is clearly smoother compared to 90hz.
Index needs the base stations on corner of room, which is a pain even if just the first day setup (I mounted mine up and have forgot about them for last two years being there). But it has never once lost my hand when flailing around like a madman behind my head or back like quest did.
But if you got time to wait, the reverb g2 looks promising for clarity and inside out tracking to beat both of them (index and quest 2).
Its the only headset since i got the index I am pondering if I'll trade up to.

We are taking about quest 2 not 1. 2 has higher res than index and 90hz not 72.
Hp seems great except for controllers

Oh i know.
just saying the reverb looks like a way better deal and fidelity in the headset than the quest 2.
As far as the controllers, they looks nearly identical to me from a form/function standpoint quest2 vs reverb g2. Same general "gamepad stick with a tracking ring attached". Same general buttons, same ergonomics, same thumbstick.
Only thing makes me skeptical of quest 2 boasted stats and quality for the wireless is the '*' of WiFi 6 is needed for good streaming quality at 90hz full res. And its h.264 compressed video. And the controller lag/smoothing on really fast games like beat saber etc is why Im staying away from wireless until its 1 to 1.
Like the quest vs index, I can feel the 'floatiness' of the controllers vs how tight they are in index on beat saber. its like a vr feeling version of mouse smoothing.
For me the cord is only a slight annoyance on games I move a lot like GORN. sitting I honestly forget its even on a cord.

The reverb controllers are tracked worse and the battery life is like 4 hours. Quest controllers last a month.
But sure, the 4k fidelity per eye on G2 is a fact and it looks btter. HZ too. But no wireless pc gaming option... and it's much more expensive than quest2

Also it might be a stupid question (i have no VR experience so far):
How immersive it is? Like KillerCrocker, you had/have quest1.
Do you always "ahh, i can see the pixels" , and how much do you have the "im in the f*ing game" eeling?
Probably this is a hard question so feel free to send my mother your best regards.

It's immersive if the game is good. With a bad game, You will see every pixel
but in Half Life ALyx, you will keep this thing on Your head for 10 hours!
Anyway - whatever you will get, will have higher res than quest1... and even quest1 resolution is good. |
Ok so what would be your personal choice? Buy a VR or just buy 3080. I have to choose vid card or VR.
Vr will be used with 1080GTX. Or 1080 will be replaced with 3080.
(Otherwise PC is up to modern standards, i7, 32gb ram, ssd etc..)

Seems to me that most headsets have their share of good and shit tied to them. Good screen, bad headstrap, ok screen, plenty of games, good headstrap, perfect screen, good headstrap, smaller selection of games.. Like laptops there seem to be something with every headset that drags them down.

Yea. They all have pros and cons. But One thing I can say is its a great example of: You get what you pay for.
I've personally have had: Rift DK1, Rift DK2, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index; and have had friends with Quest, Rifts S, Pro, and Pimax 5k.
(Yes might seem excessive, but its the 'hand me down' aspect. My Son and Daughter got the Rift and Vive along the way as I went up and got the Index as they wanted a VR headset anyway at some point for Christmas/bday).
Of them all the index is the most expensive, but best overall. Pro was a close second but after having the knuckles controllers for index, the rest all feel like fancy xbox controllers. The free floating no touch speakers on the index is far and away the easiest to use (you literally do nothing to put them on and they dont touch your head..sound just 'appears' all around you) and best sounding of them all to me.
But the cord can at times be a little bit noticeable when it rubs your leg, or your arm goes under it when flailing around. Not a huge deal I think, but if that would be immersion breaking for you might be an issue.
And unless you can/want to hard mount the base stations to the wall, you would need a way to put them up. I hard mounted mine up in each corner. Other than people asking "What is that a security camera?" now and then I 100% forget they are there.
Pimax was a mixed bag of feelings. FOV and resolution was good. But felt...odd. Colors didn't feel quite right, a bit of ghosting when moving quickly, weird curvature if looking at the extreme edges at things, and god rays that blind you in very rare and particular situations.
So far all the wireless one are 'meh' to me. They are not bad, and if it was the only type of experience I had I would think it was great. But the h.264 streaming aspect of them, SLIGHT controller floaty feeling due to 30-40ms delay, and lower refresh rate is noticeable if you are use to a corded version. Now its not much I grant it that, but its there to notice if your main headset you use a lot is an attached one.
And any of the ones I tried under $400-500 felt..well..like they was the under $400-500 ones. Not knocking them at all. Its not a bad experience in the least. Just you can notice the above "You get what you pay for" in them when you have the option to compare and contrast them.

Hey quest1,quest2 can be connected wired to the PC so I would assume that eliminates the lag. Aint that so?
So for me that would be an ultimate choice if that is so since: wired I can only play seated but I would still have the option to play wireless standing if I want to.
Please do correct me if im wrong!

I think so. Quest 1 I know you can, Quest 2 I'm fairly sure it will.
And the controller lag/fluid like reaction (hard to describe) isn't bad at all, and barely noticeable. I only notice it more I think because all I ever had was wired ones, and can 'feel' the slight difference when trying it compared to them.
Only way I can describe it is its like a weird 3d version of a very slight mouse smoothing. From what I can tell its a mix of the wireless delay and the prediction software for controllers it uses for when it can't see them well for a fraction of a second (inside out tracking) or they move quickly and its polling queued them.
And the rare slight compression artifacts when moving your head around a lot quickly, or racing games at high speed...just a HINT of that..how do I describe it? tiny finger print smudge artifacts on the trees/stands/quick changing and fast moving parts of the scene. But its the thing of "Unless your trying to see them, you dont stare off at the side of the track at trees when racing, or if you do your doing it wrong".
One thing I can suggest, unless you got a really good wireless router play in the same room as it. Friend with it was getting slight issue with it in the room behind the wall where he was. Moving the router to his room made it better.
