Curious if there is a whiskey/bourbon thread in one of the forums already going? I’ve not traveled over seas yet so I don’t know how popular it is outside of the US.

@Leo/SpykeZ
Smile I know, I know. That's not to say I haven't heard of some countries that enjoy it, just that it's been not brought up overly often in my usual conversations with people I know. One place for sure I am aware of (having friends/neighbors in the Air Force) is Japan. One of them brought me back some sake. It's so so. I've had other sake that was better. I can't read it though so I don't know what brand/make it is exactly.

Either of you tried Blanton's before? I just picked up a couple of bottles of these. I love it. It's my favorite currently.

It was more popular in my drinking habits a few years back. But I still enjoy a good glass of scotch whisky sometimes, of which I had a tiny collection. Neither whiskey nor Bourbon have found their way into the alcohol drawer very often. Maker’s Mark being the latest. It made for a nice old fashioned.

Blasphemy!

There can only be either a Whiskey thread, for the fine gentlemen of good taste, or a Bourbon thread for the vile fiends of the gutters!

Whisky is the only strong liquor I drink (except for some rum when I'm offered), single malt at that. Oban, Talisker etc. are all so tasty. Laphroaig is a bit too smoky and peaty for my taste (makes my mouth want to curl up). You'll probably find that most western countries have whisky high up on the list of preferred liquor, at least that's my experience.

Bourbon? I don't even classify that as whisky/whiskey (it's closer to a liqueur for me and I don't like it) . Laughing Laughing

My whisky of choice is the Royal Salute 21; over the years it's the one I keep coming back to.

I dabble with Gin from time to time. Gin + Lychee is a favorite combination of mine.

I like strong liquors too. Blood orange Cointreau is really, really good.

Bulgarian rakia is also good.

Laphroaig Lore as already posted and Ardbeg Uigeadail for some intense smokey flavour, Bushmills Sherry Cask and Glenfiddich 18 years for the lighter fruity touch.

As for beer: Augustiner and Leffe Blond for Lager, Staropramen for Pils, Bolten Uralt for Altbier.

Gin: Monkey 47 pure or alternatively with some Thomas Henry Tonic or Spicy Gingerale.

Vodka: Grasovka or Parlament, anything triple distilled that doesn't give a headache, otherwise some pickles are necessary

Yugoslav Rakija: any homebrew one that nearly makes you blind Laughing

Do I have the tastebuds of a kid or why does all of this taste like diesel to me? I tried 5 euro whiskey from aldi, jim beam, johnnie walker, jack daniels, glenfiddich 12 & 18, some fine german whiskey and some relatively expensive (~100€/bottle?) japanese whiskey. All taste like burned ass. I enjoy Gin and Rum though :/

It's an acquired taste, after a while you start enjoying drinking proper single malts pure or with water/on the rocks, and realize that the Johnnie and Jacky shit is only fit for drowning in a glass of coke.

@Pumpy - Yeah, it's an acquired taste or just something you need to branch out more for. I didn't start drinking until later in life and my first shot of patron was absolutely horrible. Wrote that stuff off for life...or so I thought. A couple years later I tried out 3 different types all from the same maker and their premium one was actually really good.

Same thing happened with whiskey/bourbon for me. I had one bottle a friend of mine gave me as a gift a few years back and I just couldn't like it. I shared it with some neighbor dads/friends and they didn't like it either. Told me to just pour it down the drain it was so bad haha. Then there's something like Blanton's which I had recently shared a pic of me having some and had one person ask me where I got it since they couldn't find any anywhere.

One of the dad friends (across the street from me no less) makes homebrew beer and I've tried three now from him. All have been really good. He just loves to make it and share it when he can so it's a win-win for all of us when we get together.

@Everyone else - thank you for the recommendations! I'll keep an eye out for some of those at least and pick one up if I find one. We're always looking around for something new (and ideally good) to try!

Mostly agree with you until i tried Ardbeg and Laphroaig, I had a $200 bottle of blue label Johnny walker once as well and tasted no different to the cheap shit. You don't necessarily have to pay through the roof for unique / interesting tasting spirits but it's unlikely to see any noticable difference sub $80 imo.

Try Ardbeg or Laphroaig on the rocks for anyone here interested that hasn't, it tastes nothing like any of the whiskey mentioned above. It's like drinking a creamy smoked charred oak barrel Very Happy very enjoyable, pair it with a Romeo & Julieta No.3 cuban cigar thats how its done.

I'd also recommend going to a proper whiskey bar if one exists nearby as they have the right glasses and can recommend interseting whiskey with unique flavours.

Try the Kentucky chew sometime. I didn't care much for Whiskey until a buddy of my cousin's who's a huge whiskey fan taught me this.

https://therooster.com/blog/learn-the-kentucky-chew-how-to-drink-whiskey-like-a-gentleman-instead-of-a-dumbass

I never liked it cause it tasted like burned ass. I never do the smelling shit but swishing it around burning the mouth then sipping after my mouth cooled off was cool cause it was all pure flavor and no burn after that.

That said, I still prefer my rum. Bumbu and Plantation ftw
