It's one of the few MMOs that you can jump back in at any time and just... play. Great, continuing, story events that don't leave you behind and make you miss everything, with enjoyable space combat, and it's completely free as well. Very little gating. I haven't played in a while (too large a backlog of others) but my two brothers play this religiously and love it
Hmm, i did love this game to bits, but i quit it when i found out the best type of ship was paid only or the usual deadly grind as punishment for not spending money, but this is yeears ago. Maybe i should try it again!

That has not changed and now they don't even release hero ships in the C Store anymore, they are all lockbox/promo box only so they are even harder to get. You can buy them from the exchange but they cost like 1 billion energy credits so for a casual player you will never get any of the Tier 6 hero ships.

I bought 2 ships a while ago when I was playing it all the time, and it's quite crap they way they do business.
For example; Tier 5 ships can get a free upgrade to something called 5-U, which essentially brings the basic stats like hull hitpoints up a bit to be viable in most higher-level stuff - and allows 'ship mastery' - 5 levels with minor updates per level to a slightly better final 'power'.
Then you look at the equivalent paid for Tier 6 ships and they add either a special universal module that gives it a special weapon or skill, the hitpoints are ramped up, there are higher-level bridge officer slots and more module slots.
For £25 notes per ship.
Lockboxes are lockboxes. In-game events are beyond grindy. And attempting any of the PvE or PvE ship stuff with a T5-U is never going to be quite as much fun as a T6, because you simply die more.
Ships are simply too expensive IMO, but ell they're not going to change now.

Cryptic actually seem to be testing a way to overcharge for ships once lock boxes get banned in the EU with their new $200+ 10 ship bundle of all the Tier 6 hero ships.
They already said there is no current plans to add the ships individually into the C Store so these sort of bundles look like what they might try to do if they cannot sell lock boxes anymore.
If you're playing it from the beginning, then there is a FUCK ton of content, a lot of it is fine - as long as you imagine yourself in an alternative Trek universe - a mix of Mirror and normal, where the Federation have slightly altered their concept of diplomacy to include various types of phasers, disruptors, and axes wielded by Presidents. (apparently...)
Starfleet have the best ships in terms of looks. Romulans have a far smaller range of ships, but they have the awesome Singularity powers, Klingons... they like Blood Wine...
IMO tho, the moment you clear all the episodes... then that's pretty much it. Some of the single events are good a few times... but once you're done with those, then you are expected to simply grind grind grind over and over and over and over.....
There's still a good 30-40 hours of fun here I think.

Star Trek Online: House Reborn Now Live!
Divided...Shattered...Reborn.
Divided...Shattered...Reborn. J'ula believed that the Klingon Empire, having seen proof of J'mpok's treachery, would rise up against him. She was wrong. The Great Houses splintered instead, shattering the empire into warring factions, looking out for themselves. Her brother, T'kuvma, gave everything to unite the Klingon Empire, and in one fell swoop, J'ula has undone all of it. Now, she must venture within to find the answers, at the holiest of Klingon worlds, Boreth. Journey with her there, and discover what lies in the heart of Grethor. Will the Empire be saved, or finally destroyed?
We're proud to announce that House Reborn is now live on PC! Experience an epic story through two new episodes starring J.G. Hertzler, Robert O'Reilly, Rekha Sharma, and our two newest cast members. Sam Witwer is stepping into the shoes of Kenneth Mitchell, taking on the role of Tenavik under Ken's direction. And Mary Chieffo is joining the story as well, reprising her role of L'Rell from the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery. What role could L'Rell have to play in this tale? You'll have to dive into House Reborn to find out.
But that's not all. With the release of this new update, we've completed our rework of the Klingon Starting Experience. Begin a new Klingon character now to experience the classic story, brought to the modern era with redesigned levels, updated character and environment art, new cutscenes, new voiceovers, and more. For the first time, you'll be able to experience that story as a Klingon from the Discovery era. It's the perfect time to be a Klingon - not least of which because the Klingon Recruitment Event begins today as well. Your new Klingon will be embroiled in a mysterious story, hunting down Enemies of the Empire for a shadowy benefactor. Play through the game as a Klingon, and unlock new Recruit rewards, like an exclusive T6 Ship, the M'Chla Refit! And of course, when you reach level 65 with any KDF character, you'll unlock the ability to fly every ship in the game across your entire account.
On top of all of that, it's our 11th Anniversary! Our game has officially been going strong for more than a decade now, and we want to celebrate with you. Join in the Anniversary Event through playing much of the new story content, or through playing the classic Omega Molecule Stabilization Game. Doing so will allow you to progress towards unlocking the first ever ship designed in concert between the Klingons and Romulans, the Temer-class Raider. And the Picard Zhat Vash Lock Box is here, giving you access to all kinds of twisted Romulan tech.
We're so excited to shout "Qapla'!" with you, Captains! See you on the honorable battlefield.

Oh joy. Gotta buy those keys...
They did also just announce the next multi event unlock will be a large sum of Lobi or your choice of any lock box or promo ship in the game but this time they said it will take 5 events for the unlock instead of 3 like the previous T6 coupon or Lobi choices. The first part of this will start in late February.
Since I am space poor in the game at least I will finally be able to get the Discovery Constitution Miracle Worker Flight Deck Carrier for my main character when all is finally done.
