Didn't see a thread about 3D printing. If there is one just point me to it. As usually the search tells me nothing exists for keywords I know should exist..somewhere Razz

Picked one up on recommendation from a friend with a CR-10. Was on the fence about the CR-10S, CR-10S Pro and CR-10V2..got the V2.
Was SUPER easy to put together, about 8 screws, and some cables. Most of its already assembled compared to CR-10 you need to put it together part by part.

Have had it about a week, and so far other than learning curve and user errors have had no issues. Only printing in PLA at the moment. I have mostly printed a few utility things. My first 5-6 prints was parts to add to my printer..lol.

Printed this out for my son. I forgot and left it on 'fast' and 0.3mm layers. Should have done 0.1mm but its good enough result for my first 'complicated' print despite leaving it on essentially rough draft settings:
 Spoiler:

Anyone else have a 3D printer? Any good resources you like for learning more about it, or the more in depth in and outs of them?

I'm going to try it again when I get more use to it.
Still working out good temps and settings, and learning about supports and how to not end up with a bed full of rats nest..haha.
Used 1/3 of a roll on that thing, going to get more comfortable with it before trying again.

Somehow I just saw this Sorry Vurt. Forums doesn't tell me anymore when there is a reply to topics.
Its not as big as I could make it, as I wasnt sure if I was doing it right. Its about 280mm tall. Print area is 300W x 300L x 400H.

PLA is pretty cheap, that took about 1/3 of roll and a roll is 1KG for $30 US. So about 10 bucks? Took about 17 hours to print.

That's not too bad (cost)... do you sand it down a bit to get a smoother surface? I also read somewhere that there's some type of fluid you can use to remove the stripes that you usually can see in these prints.

Seems like a fun hobby, especially since i'm already into 3D modelling a bit.

Nowadays I tend to go by the "the less the better".
I try to keep the least amount of stuff. It's much simpler. Nothing has to be maintained, cared for etc.

I'm so glad I got rid of printers. Even if someone tells me to sign something: send me digitally. I won't sign, print, scan anything. (Mainly because I don't have one)

You can sand it, but I didn't on that one. Well on any of them honestly, as 95% of what I have printed is utility stuff: Holder for my vive controllers and index headset, a BUNCH of custom tool holders for the garage, waaay to many mods for the printer (I made it an all in one). Some flower pots for my wife, An art sorter for my daughters paints/pencils/brushes/etc. Some unique gauges/templates for woodworking I would use a lot.

For smoothing it with vapors, that works for ABS, not so much for PLA. But PLA and some primer spray paint goes a long way to 'smooth' out the tiny layer lines. Get the printer dialed in they are reallllly small. This is the vive contoller holder. I didn't do anything to it other than just print it and use it as is. Its not glass like smooth obviously, but more than good enough for its purpose.
 Spoiler:

I wouldn't recommend getting one unless its just for a hobby and you want to make things. I got it for the same reason when we bought a house, it HAD To have a 2 car garage: So I can never put cars in it, but make it my wood/workshop to tinker around in building things with all the woodworking tools I gathered over the years.
So its sort of like a drill press or bandsaw, unless you want to get it to make a hobby out of using them to do something you enjoy, they are not really things to pick up on a whim. More a specific tool you can enjoy spending time with learning how to use it well.

yes for utility stuff it's obviously not really needed unless you want it to be really pretty, but that holder looked pretty smooth!

I think it would be a fun hobby and i know i can make a little bit of money with it if i do something good with it (mainly custom action figure and diorama stuff... i've noticed people who are into that are sometimes very rich people and willing to spend haha)..

Which format is most often used for the printing program? Is it .obj?

I need to get myself a good color printer too eventually, also seems like fun.. i have one but it's not anything special.

edit: this is typically the stuff i would do... Star Wars dioramas and such.

STL is the format all the slicers use.

For things like that I would suggest a dual head printer, one with the model filament you want and one with dissolvable filament for supports or you would need to spend a LOT of time taking off supports.
Like the stairs and the raised platform. It prints in tiny layers, they would have nothing to print 'onto'. It would try to start print them midair. It takes the model and slices it into 0.2mm layers and prints each one, moves up 0.2mm and prints the next..etc (or whatever layer size you set)

It can span small spaces. But long runs of nothing underneath it just falls down and starts making plastic spaghetti birds nests if you dont use supports.

The dissolvable filament you dunk it in water for a few hours and the mesh support parts just disappear.

Sure, just ship 3kg filament my way and I'll do it Smile

Was expecting this to be a rather expensive hobby, but surprisingly pretty cheap.

£450 all in.

Ender 3 V2 itself.

Plus on recommendation of others:

Teflon Tube PTFE Blue Tubing(1.5 Meters) with 3 Pieces PC4-M6 Fittings and 3 Pieces PC4-M10 Male Straight Pneumatic PEFE Tube Push Fitting to replace shit ones included.

Light Load Compression Mold Die Spring (Yellow 8 * 20mm) x4 to replace crap bed ones.

Creality BLTouch V3.1 Auto Bed Levelling Sensor Kit - A must have apparently?.

8th Pi 4 (4Gb) for control.

100CM Pi Camera Ribbon Cable.

Pi 4 v2 8M Camera (got instructions to print arm and fittings when set up).

3 x 1.75 PLA 1kg Filament.

Set of decent Digital Callipers.

Let's see how well this goes Laughing

Yeah i picked up this hobby and growing plants during lock-down as something to do, bought and built a Prussa i3 MK3s. First big project was design and print all these parts, A vertical hydroponics and custom lighting setup.

Was a shitload of work (probably 6 months of trial and error, printing and epoxy coating parts). Printer has been running non-stop since getting it, unbelievably useful and can see it being a home staple in future.

The reddit threads are riddled with cosplay and people print star wars stuff :/ you really can do anything if you put your mind to it. Some of the stuff i've done:

Magentic catches cupboard doors, clips, stands for tools, headphones, parts etc.
Cases for everything, arduino, rasp-pi, usb sticks and any other electronic parts.
Hydrometer using polystyrene, petg tubing and printed parts.
Full printer enclosure with exhaust using stacked IKEA tables, printed parts and perspex.
Print blocking panels for PC interior so you can properly close of any air gaps in your cooling.

Amazing piece of gear really, initially i was intimidated by the modelling side of it but its really really easy. Install autodesk fusion (free for home use) watch 2x 30 min tutorials on utub by Lars Christensen and your an expert.

looks amazing indeed, i have a friend who will adore this kind of plant holder idea. Do u have the models and materials used somewhere online in a blog or reddit post ?

what are those lights above them btw ?

any good reddit 3dprinting plant related reddits?

Just wondering though with all this climate and environment stuff going to take off bigtime after covid, isnt it possible they will start taxing the living hell out of plastic ?

any environment friendly/degradable materials one can print with yet ?

Yes! PLA. It's biodegradable and can be created from renewable sources. Still got to get me one of those 3D machines. I have hold off as I my experience with printers is: when I need it, it's broken Razz

actually , it is recyclable under specific conditions which don't occur in nature, it needs 50 degrees celsius and a steady stream of microbes in industrial composting facility for about 3 monhts , and its made from corn starch , its far from perfect, but much better than ABS for the enviroment

I forgot I made this thread Smile

A few weeks back I designed and printed out a tray that fits under the rails to turn mine into an All in One. and ditched the separate ugly black controller box.
Also added a dial indicator so I can zero out level the bed in the 4 corner and center vs doing the 'paper slide' junk.

Made it so it fit right under the bed rails and fills the space, with a plexiglass cover so I can see into it, no real reason for that other than it just fancier looking to me that way Smile.
Added some buck converters to power the two fans I added, and one to power the raspberry Pi running octoprint, and put it all in one case. Now everything the printer controls, power supply, Pi, USB and all is part of one unit:
(That bright light isnt coming from inside it, its from the spotlight I added to the top reflecting off the plexi).

So, found out mine came with 4.2.2 board with the shitty drivers, lol, typical Rolling Eyes 4.2.7 replacement on the way, but a pain in the ass, as it took me ages to wire in the bucks with new fans/BTT Sensor & BLTouch. Now I have to rip it all out again Evil or Very Mad

Jesus! No wonder the steppers get hot! (there are heatsinks behind there, lol, and newer board has taller ones). Gonna have to tidy that lot up after new board fitment, and I think I'll replace fan for good measure. They must also finish up with the glue gun at a party, FFS! Evil or Very Mad

Mine was the same way when I took it all out to rewire into that under the bottom box.
They hot glued EVERY quick connect.

You can probably find a model for a fan stand, thats what I did at first. Was a dual 120mm stand you screwed on to replace the bottom plate.

Is there a good printer out there where i don't need to buy replacement parts for like 3-4 things because what it comes with is shit (fans and whatnot)?

Any recommendations?

I have around 600 euro to spare on a 3D printer.

Most decent quality ones work fine out of the box. No need to replace anything.
Creality ones are decent bang for the buck and pretty noob friendly for setup.

I just did mine because I wanted to, not because any of it needed it. I ran it for months stock.
Only reason I did any of it was personal preferences like wanting no fan noise, at all. Not having an external control box, wanting bed leveling like a machinist mill with a dial indicator, and wanting a led spotlight that turns on when its on lighting the bed.

Yeah, the Ender 3 V2 is very affordable, I paid £230 for it, and will do just fine without mods.

I wanted to upgrade fans, add BLTouch, Filament runout sensor, switch board with latest (4.2.7), upgrade bed springs, nozzles etc, and replace bed surface with a good quality PEI variant, but all my choice, and they can all be done in the future if you so wish Smile

I may just look into that fan stand though, as it is a bit tight in that space

This is what i used. No idea if your control box is the 'generic creality one' but sure they have one for whatever box you got.
