I suspect they'll be extraordinarily careful with this one to avoid causing any friction or anger from the community, especially considering the backlash over WC3 reforged.
See in particular how quick they were to say they acknowledged fan feedback on the hatred for many of the new character designs.
Still it's nu-Blizzard, I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.

Would also be nice if playing classic without the expansion still worked, but... when they really have D2 intact below the new renderer it should. You could glitch-rush characters through classic to hell, then convert them to expac characters to get around the level gating they added on the act5 ancients quest.

Botting was the only true motivation to even playing D2 for me... watching the bot endlessly doing its runs, waking up in the morning to a stash full of glorious loot. It'd be in their best interest to ban me every couple of months, I'd just rebuy a keyset and continue.

At that point, why not just spawn in the items you want? What's the point of having the bot do it? So you can feel some sense of legitimacy that you "earned" the loot? You didn't. Guess I'll never understand the cheater mindset.

Because you could not just cheat items in on closed bnet and the drop probabilities of some items are atrociously low, to this day. Your basic gear you can farm by hand from mephisto, sure. You also did that when playing up your character, because you first have to be equipped fairly well for your bot to survive through all of hell.
But runes for the highest level runewords are another matter. I botted for years, and I still never found a single Zod rune. Some Jahs, some Bers, but Zod... never.
Well and all that loot you traded on trading forums like d2jsp of course. Against other gear, or preferably forum gold. Which you traded in again at the start of next season for starter gear, to be quicker at equiping your new botting char optimally. That was the basic gameplay loop for me
Almost everyone back then in my country who worked in the booming internet-cafes used bots for items. There was a country-wide network separate from Battle.net - Headoff. Most people played on it with yaaar copies. So the guys with the 24/7 boss runs bots sold the items they get to people on the network. Now the problem was that very few people had debit/credit cards and the only way to pay for D2 items was to meet the guy in person and pay him cash. I never bought items but if I remember right for a single SoJ or Oculus it was something in the range of 5-6 Bulgarian levs (2-3 euros). Had some friends who, in good months, made their monthly salaries (which were low anyway, something like 100 euros) in selling items around the country. Still wasn't much but they had fun.
The Diablo II: Resurrected Single-player Technical Alpha on PC will begin this Friday, April 9, at 15:00 BST. According to Blizzard, only a limited selection of players who opted-in for Technical Alpha will be chosen randomly for access and will receive instructions on participating over email in the coming days. Technical Alpha will conclude for all testers on Monday, April 12, at 18:00 BST.
ARPGs aren't quite my cup of tea as I'm more of a CRPG aficionado and I never really loved anything made by Blizzard, but I wouldn't mind revisiting a Diablo 2 Botox isoedition done properly. They also do mention that an offline mode will be possible in single-player so maybe maybe it isn't too much of a travesty after all.
