Other than the decent first season, Luther was never great. The writing has always been rubbish but it was always carried by Idris.

It was still written and directed by the same ones that did the BBC show. I think it was more the Netflix money, which is more then they probably normally had, and the 2 hour limit of a movie plus trying to make it into a potential movie franchise really put the story going in all directions.
