VR is shit until it's taken seriously. Right now i only see a few attempts to change that trend, but nothing sticks.

well, everything is shit unless it's trying to do its absolute best for that type of entertainment, genre etc. There are plenty of fails for VR, but also for games and entertainment in general. VR is still fresh, not everything will be great. It's not like 3D games were perfect in the first few years either, a few of them sure.

It will take a while to perfect it, it shouldn't be abandoned because of a few fails, if we did that we wouldn't have 3D games either.

That's absolutely right. Companies need to do better to make VR attractive and they ain't doing it. It's not on me to unshit VR, that's on them.

There will be a lot of experimentation, just like it was for 3D in the start. It's a must for it to develop so yes there will be shit, and that shit is needed so that we can get past it.

I still remember playing the first 3D game on C64 (Scarabaeus) and it blew me away to suddenly play in 3D.. it took many, may years after that to "perfect" 3D gaming though. I think right now with VR we probably are at Doom 1, we've passed Wolfenstein era for VR Very Happy so not a ton of progress, but some.

Some are trying to right the ship and I for one can not wait to try Resident Evil 4 on my Quest 2...

VR is best for a rather specific genre and games, if you're not interested in it, then it will probably do very little for you.

so yeah a gimmick as i said and a rather overpriced one

Gimmick?

There are some decent titles for it:
-Alyx
-Asgard Wrath
-Lies Beneath
-MoH Above and beyond
-Walkin dead
-Boneworks
-GORN
-Robo Recall
-The climb
-Budget Cuts
-Faces of fear 2
-Blair Witch

Yeah, you won't find 10000+ titles that worth it, but again. It's really up to you to decide what's pricy for you and what not.
For me it was worth it. But for me it wasn't money that concerned me.
The complication. How much space does it take up, how much time will it consume just to prepare for a session.

But Alyx without Vr is pretty stupid. It was designed for VR.

I'm really not into these simulator stuff, but if anyone wants those then sure, please add it to the list.

BTW, now I recall a someone from a video sharing/playing site.
He/she used a VR headset for Snowrunner with steering wheel and pedals. Running 3rd person view and constatnly using the mouse for positioning the camera. idiot.......

I would say, try it out and if the user doesn't like it: sell the device.
But if the user is a real gamer, I would find it really exceptional saying "ahh i dont really like this alyx game".

(It could happen of course but....)

It's been here for quite a while now. Like 5 years I would say. I don't think it would die in the coming years, especially that most of the companies go wireless with it.

For me that was the dealbreaker. I can't use the stuff wired, and also not with all the supplemental boxes/radars/positioning systems/cameras/ etc stuff.

BTW have you ever tried at least one VR visor?
I would say go ahead try one before judging.

Then again It's still a valid point not liking it Smile

VR will not die i mean porn alone is enough for it to stay afloat for while.
It will be superseded by BCI devices in time and that's when it will really kick off. There are way too many downsides with VR atm so it will never reach mass appeal, BCI will fix all of those and more.

I imagine we will first see market ready BCI enhanced VR devices in a few years and we are very likely at least a decade or 2 away from full deep dive devices like that where really everything happens in your brain.

won't die out since we've had VR since the 90's or even earlier... not sure why some people are so against VR.. either you like it or not.. it's not like i care if sports games exists, they don't interest me, but i also don't buy them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ive had a VR a few times, love it. Wouldn't want to play a full game on it though and it inevitably gets ignored after a few months.

To me its more of a fun with friends thing. Would rather sit comfortable on my fat arse looking at a window into my gaming worlds.

I don't have it currently. I use 3D Vision to at least get something from VR. What's especially nice with VR is getting everything in real-life scale, horror games and simulators really excels in VR.

Thinking about getting it again.. been holding off since i want better FOV.

Until VR is affordable to a wide audience, it will never get the same dedication from devs and titles will remain very few and far in between. Now I can give valve a thousand dollars and wait six months+ to MAYBE get one just so I can play alyx. Or I can save that grand for medical emergencies, life payments and just use a mod instead.

If you're wealthy more power to you, the tech does need the early adopter whales to advance. But to most it's a really stupid purchase.

well that's what they've been trying to do with VR in these last years, to commercialize it, and with decent success i would say for something so expensive. It will not move forward (lower prices, more titles, more support) unless people support it.

Price is actually quite low now in comparison to even graphics cards. My 1080 ti was 3x as expensive as a Quest 2. PC gaming in general is very expensive i would say, at least if you're someone who's into having the best graphics and FPS.

What about another option, push Valve to make Alyx playable without VR crap !? They will certainly sell it in more numbers than this abomination. Mad
Besides, VR is fooking with your brain and eyes.

@AmpegV4,

since you're using VR a lot, do you have problems such as eye strain, loosing balance, grabbing stuff around the place that actually isn't there,
having 'detached hands' from your body nightmares etc ? Do you unintentionally crush things with your hands. Bumping into the walls without the VR set on your head.

My problem with Quest 2 is that it requires a fagbook account. And when you type in a fake account you get booted and can't use the device you paid good money for.
Fagbook wants to know what kind of VR porn you watch and that's just a nono.

Wearing those bulky 'machines' on one's face will never be the right way to 'proper' VR.

It IS experimental, still, yes, but, in time, developers and engineers will have to come up with a better solution. And probably, in time, they will.

Regarding VR we're still in the age of room sized computers.

yeah not a fan of the bulky head-gears myself, it's why i've downgraded to 3D vision glasses, its very ergonomic. i could use it with e.g a track IR to get closer to a VR experience, but it will still be a rather downgraded experience in comparison.

i don't really see how VR would work without a headset though, VR would not be as effective on a screen, even it could process stereoscopic 3D without glasses. You won't get the real-life scale experience, even in comparison to my 124" projector screen i think the scale is more realistic in VR.

The headsets will get less bulky though, which is the best we can hope for in the coming 10 years or so.

Get real. Unless You disconnect from any network and life in a trailer park, it absolutely does not matter how much data you try to hide.
I don't have quest2 but I had quest1 and it was fantastic. Playing wirelessly is a deal breaker
