Im 1/2 in your boat pax. Some people want more ram for the same reason they want more ghz: BIgger numbers = better things.
But dont think anyone says more ram = faster. They are saying more ram = ...more ram.
99% of the time vram for gaming at 11g on 1080ti is enough for me. BUT 1% of the time I eat it all. So if I can get more I will. I dont need it, nor is it a 'more ram = more gooder'.
Its I know I can peak mine out now, and can't convince myself to go from 11gb to 10gb in a downstep.
Also DLSS is 'if it has it' and 'if game will ever be added anyway'. Unless it's a AAA game DLSS is a far off wishlist item it will probably never have.
Rule of thumb now is unless the game is a AAA 1st/3rd person action genre and you play those types, you are SOL for reasons to want DLSS or need it.
Will games down the line have more and more support? Absolutely. And next gen cards I will decided if enough games I play on it to care if it exists as an option.

Here we go again it was mistake for nvidia to market 3090 as gaming card with its whopping 24GB VRAM, now people who doesnt know anything thinks that its actually needed for their 1080p screens and makes everything faster.
I dunno breezer, I dont think the overlap of those that get 3090 and those that game at 1080p are a big group

Checking the VRAM usage in Afterburner etc. doesn't tell you how much VRAM is being used since games simply reserve as much as it can that isn't used by the OS (and when the OS says "give me 986MB" that VRAM will go back to the OS). So if a game actually use ~8.4GB, it has reserved another chunk that isn't actually being used, it's simply available in case they patch the game, release textures for 8K gaming ( ) etc.
So in essence; 10-12GB is fine up to and including 4K gaming and will be for years to come for high end gaming. Anything above that is just placebo. At 4K with ultra settings on everything in the most demanding games it's the actual workload that will tax even the most powerful GPU regardless of whether you have 10-12GB or 20-24GB VRAM. I believe there's this "future proof"-insecurity going on that has suddenly put the focus on VRAM size.
I remember crysis being called "future proof" look how its doesn't know what to do with modern hardware.
I think the future is finding rendering ways that are far more efficient and less costly which I'm sure there are if investment is put there and I see the incentive for that rising if world affairs carry on the way they are.

@Frant
Depends on the software I think.
As I said 99% of my games are just fine. The ones I run into micro hiccups and notice its allocated it all, for example is cities skylines on huge cities with lots of mods and building texture addons, MSFS if I push it to "let's see if all maxed out gets me more than 10FPS" flying in big cities. And VaM (virt-a-mate VR thing). VaM eats GPU g-ram like crazy in some scenes. [Not the card or systems fault, its squarely VaMs problem]
I'm on the side of 10-16gb is more than enough for the vast vast majority of people and games for a long time. 99 out of 100 people dont need more than that.
I just can't go 'down' to 10 because I have 11 now, and that 'downgrade' flawed thinking. And for the handful of extreme examples that are more common than not for my particular gaming situations.

guys , what is your idle power usage in open hardware monitor/gpuz ? my rx570 uses 30wats according to both tools. Way more then the 8w most reviews state , ffs, thats even more then almost my laptop running furmark grrr
one monitor 60hrz hdmi , all clocks are at its lowest according to gpuz
how much W does your cards use idle in what kind of setup ?
The only way to know for sure is to measure at the wall.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
My 1080ti sits around 15w if the software reading is accurate.

I had real life incident , and had to return my 6800 XT
I am still going to get one or equivalent eventually, I am going to settle with 3060 ti for the time being, the prices are insane and I hope eventually they will be normilzed and I will get new graphics card.

what happened ? Incident as in real life happened and you needed the money back, or the card died ?
I got scammed and money stolen from me, I decided that 6800 xt is too much investment after that incident, but hopefully things will improve in time, and I will buy it again eventually.
In the end, glad I got the 6800xt even though its overpirced, I managed to sweeten the deal by selling out my just arrived 3070(and soon 3060 ti), Now I could look on the GPU crisis from beyond for hopefully it will be over till I will need a new card.
So... the guy who bought your 3070 did a charge back? Shit
While that is a bad design for sake of 1st place.
If it helps you sleep any better. Nearly everyone I know that buys the flagship cards, spends that money you state ever generation anyway
I'd say a majority of people that get the top end card, replace it every gen without having to be 'forced' to.
Also I hope that was just a joke comment and you really don't think the marketing team is so short sighted and glue eaters to go: "You know what will make them buy our next gen of cards more? Making the current ones they have die on them".
You know, because nothing has ever made me wanted to buy the next version of a brand, like having the one I currently have die prematurely.
Now it was a deliberate choice yes. I think for sake of lack of ability to engineer a working solution to retain 'top dog'. Not a ploy to induce planned obsolescence, in such a tight race for customer loyalty.
