I like this trend Everything Went Better Than Expected, it recently happened to Hitman as well. Modern compression methods can definitely work wonders, especially alongside some common sense.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-07-01-microsoft-flight-sim-set-to-receive-massive-performance-improvements-in-next-pc-update

Quote:
Microsoft Flight Simulator is gorgeous but notoriously demanding of PC hardware; however, developer Asobo says it'll be getting a whole lot less demanding when its next Sim Update arrives alongside the game's highly anticipated Xbox Series X/S release on 27th July.

Asobo offered a look the huge performance improvements coming to Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC during its latest developer livestream, with CEO Sebastian Wloch explaining the team has rewritten "a lot of the parts of the engine...in order to get the maximum performance out of the sim", as part of its work on the upcoming console version.

To illustrate just how effective Asobo's engine tweaks have been, Wloch demoed a before-and-after gameplay video featuring a flyover of Manhattan, captured from a PC equipped with an i7-9700K CPU and Nvidia 2060 Super graphics card - and running Flight Simulator at Ultra settings in 4K with a 40% render scale (jump to the 8-minute mark below to see the footage).
This content is hosted on an external platform, which will only display it if you accept targeting cookies. Please enable cookies to view.

Flight Simulator's photogrammetry cities are some of the most hardware intensive areas in the game, and Wloch's PC set-up managed to hit an extremely stuttery 30-40fps while flying over Manhattan in the currently released build. However, footage of the upcoming build shows the same PC hitting a stutter-free 50-60fps in exactly the same flyover scenario.

Wloch notes that in the original footage, his PC's CPU is operating at 100% while his GPU flits between 50-75%. However, post-engine-optimisation and re-architecturing, that's reversed, with the CPU now running at 75% and the GPU at 100%. Additionally, system memory usage falls from 27GB to 14GB (while the memory demands of the sim itself fall from 16GB to 4.7GB).

Nice.

@tonizito
That sounds promising.
MSFS in VR on a Reverb2 is great. But even with my new 6800xt can be a hit or miss on if the immersion is broken by framerate or loading stutter. Out in the open/rural areas its fine, over towns like Paris and NYC...forget it unless you turn it down so far it also breaks the immersion due to just looking 'not real' for VR.

Heres me hoping that the top gun addon is just the first step to a full fledged FSX powered military dogfight and ground to war bombing sim lol

LOL it makes me think it's a European thing of "we don't lie in our marketing" (opposite of Star Citizen, etc.), but really, I think they would have been better off with either faking performance or using a smoother real-time rendering video with lower graphics. It doesn't make me want to go in, download the 100GB update and play it seeing how choppy it is.

Yeah, you need a 3090 to enjoy smoothness Laughing

Latest patch did make game worse though, framerate wise, even with Google Maps mod.

I'm running a 3080 at 3440 x 1440 and average 40-60 fps. Usually sits at a good solid 60 fps unless I enter cities, where it drops as low as 35fps.

No jitters and smooth as silk unless as I say in high density areas.

Its more CPU bound though, it runs exceptionally well on the 5800X3D with lots of cache.

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
