Just watched the Planetina episode.. it was bad.
Spoiler: | Morty getting cock/love-blocked for the sake of it feels super dry by this point, and Planetina completely losing her shit all of a sudden felt completely predictable, yet senseless and out of her usual self.
It was one of the series' first attempts to have something more elaborate/grounded relationship-wise and it was a complete trainwreck.. to pull this kind of stuff off you need more time on-screen and more thought, not everyone works under ten minutes. Only Morty crying to Beth at the end felt okay, it was the correct ending after a whole lot of fuckery. |
Will see the rest of the season, but they're going in circles at this point

Episode 08 is the only one that resembles “old” R&M. The best in a forgettable season 5

I think a lot of it is the over expectations of the show? People have hyped it waaay past what it really is: A cartoon with thin premise plot, an absurdity of "Who knows who has died how many times" (because really it doesn't matter rick could be on his 2nd family or 100th..no difference really), and using edgy humor and run of the mill character stereotypes. That's it.
I never thought it was 'great', it was good for what it was and fun to watch with the family.
But to me this season is no more hit or miss than any others overall. It just seems every season the level of expectation is multiped by what season it is. When it was new, there was no expectations so whatever it gave was accepted. The edginess of it was fresh and 'ok this is cool' type thing. But even the same level of edgy only works so long.
Now people expect more..remembering only the episodes they loved, to magnifying glass against everyone that comes out.
There was its share of crap episodes every season. Even season 1 and 2 had its 'meh' episodes. But the 'meh' was less because of the hype/excitement of "New Car Smell".
Sure they are repeating the same old tropes the old ones already did. But the old one was no 'better' than this one. Just you seen them do it already...so first time was new, the next time its used the expectation is: first time * level of 'above and beyond' you need to make it 'as good as the new first time I saw it done'.

No, the first ones had continuity and and an overall arc story. The Characters stayed true to themselves preserving the boundaries, physical and moral, that defined them.
It was filled with well crafted hilarious and or emotional moments. like when we get the full Nine Inch Nails “Hurt” featured (perfectly matched by the story/ editing) that was two seasons in the making → How that compares to what we have now it's beyond me

Last episode was more like it, and gets a bonus score because of...
Spoiler: |
Bringing back Bird Person
|
But still not on the level of previous seasons (especially 1-3).

All jokes aside, alas - and agree with B1kudo - it is noticeable that the underlying charm and awkward sense of cohesiveness of the show got progressively lost over the last two seasons, leaving us with something that resembles a shambolic collection of mini-setpieces with a more fatuous type of humour in it. It's like having R&M, but made by the AI algorithm from Rick's garage.
What DX said about the novelty wearing off is also true though, the show has experimented with so many bizarre outcomes and has presented so many different over-the-top situations that surprising the viewers at his point has become objectively more difficult. With a concept like this, you either come up with something genuinely brilliant every time or you're gonna inevitabily fall into the pit of averageness.

I think what sets the decline of the show is the lack of overarching plot, so to say. Their main set point was to make every episode a stand alone. But the show consist mostly of: "come on Morty let's go for a new whacky adventure". Unfortunately the infinite adventures in the multiverse is as finite as the imagination of the writers and now in season five we are starting to recycle the plots and tropes with character not evolving.
The only witty episode in this season was the one with clones (IMO).

@ixigia @VonMisk
I see it the exact opposite way, it started to lose its charm to me when they tried to push to the front it HAD a ongoing link between the shows a couple seasons in.
Like Venture Bros, I really love that show but it lost its luster last handful of seasons when it went from 'sitcom' style each episode was its own arch, to that you needed to know the whole storys plot know what they was talking about.
My preference in my comedy cartoons is all I think. Like simpsons, bobs burger, family guy, etc. You can watch any episode and not be lost on 1/2 the jokes. Those do have ongoing 'situations' but they aren't necessary to know the canon or lore of to get the episode. (Fry liking leela and the mixed feeling she has about it, the wongs rich family with amy spoiled, zap being an ever failing captain..etc)
This one my wife watches it most the time with me and my son but not always..so she had to ask "What they mean the other Beth? There is two?" or "Whats that mean about X?" and we have to pause and go "well you see 2 seasons ago, blah blah happened..and so-and-so did something or another" to catch her up.
Its a silly fun cartoon to me, it doesnt need soap opera like levels of intertwined ongoing story or evolving characters that 'grow'...it just saps the 'fun' out of it. I think BoJack was the only comedy cartoon that did that well.

Companies have been that way long as I can remember. TV shows and commercial entities since the 70's (oldest reference I can remember) have been exactly this way when a celebrity does something stupid. The old soap opera of the 80's would kill off a character in the bat of an eye if someone on it was publicly accused of something that would taint the shows/channels reputation.
Not saying every industry is like this, but hollywood yea. So this has nothing to do with cancel culture. Unless you mean getting fired for being publicly accused of crimes is a new thing in hollywood since cancel culter manta came out.

Just let it die. Adult Swim killed far better animations than this.

@VonMisk
Yea, and I don't think it was particularly great. It was different is all. But once that different, became the norm of it watchers started expecting grandiose things it fundamentally wasn't..and said "new season is shit" when new season was on par with the others..just not 'more' than the others.
As seasons went on, the expectations of what it needed to deliver, surpassed what the show was to start with.
Not that it was bad. But to me it was no 'great' show anymore than Cow and Chicken or Ed Edd and Eddy. Both enjoyable shows for sure. But nothing groundbreaking, again just simply different and unexpected from what was. R&M has the plague of fans going "MOAR!" each season. And it didnt have much to really give to start with beyond 'quirky' and when that became norm..it ran out of steam to go beyond what it really was.
