Not surprised since there isn't a lot of space to push microtransactions in a game like KOTOR.

We've really reached an impasse with the poor Star Wars. Bioware is no more, and even if (by some miracle) papa EA lost the exclusive rights we'd still have Disney which ideally wants their flagship title to be nothing less than an uber-mainstream popamole action game dipped in verycool sauce for the decaying toy industry and nostalgic remains. There is no escape pod either way

EA can only work on SWTOR. The publishing rights and the IP rights for KOTOR are with Disney (Windows version) and Aspyr (Mac, Linux and Android).
And Disney is quite strict when it comes to their owned IP's. Bioware as we knew it before EA is long gone. Obsidian is now with MS. Disney shows no interest in continuing the old IP's, which are considered now non-canon in the SW universe (at least under Lucas they were part of the expanded universe).

I really rather that not turn out to be true, but it wouldn't actually surprise me. I always thought going back to the KOTOR well would be an odd choice for EA, or another big publisher now that Disney have opened things up. There's no real money in those sorts of RPGs. That stuff is for indies and mid-tiers (what few of those still exist). And if you were going to make some sort of open world Star Wars game (RPG or not), surely there would be any number of existing settings/brands you could hijack, or just make something new.

I mean, what's the point ? This would be exciting news if it was 2010 or earlier, and it would be done by Obsidian or even Bioware of back then. But now ? How can anyone get exciting with a soulless cash grab on a massive old IP ?
I wouldn't trust any dev to do it justice, hell, wouldn't trust most devs to even make a decent followup.
Not to mention that if you still count the MMO then you can't really do much with it story wise.
Getting excited for a new KotOR game, is the same as getting excited for a new Obsidian made game, its just a name, everything else is different and rotten, nothing to get excited about.
Its bad enough they're killing Vampire the Masquarade with that abomination they're "working" on, don't want more of my favorites to be butchered, KotOR suffered enough with the MMO already.

Vampire the masquerade 2 went along smoothly though. Someones brain completely rotted during the process and they kicked out the leads. That's where it went south. Now they're empowering women and subverting male power fantasies  jesus christ how much of a beta male you have to be to be all for this. Why can't we simply have strong female and males? The idiots who don't realize by now that these femcunts only want entitlements and not equality should just jump of a building.

They won't make a moneymaker irrelevant. Lots of people would quit and not care about a "non canon" story.
But afaik Swtor haven't touched much upon the subject of the true sith

The original KOTOR wasn't a mechanically complex game by any means, but I'll be surprised if they won't streamline the core elements and convert the RTwP combat to an action-based one reprising the you press a button and the awesome happens dogma. We'll see, Aspyr doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, though according to the Peestation blog they've hired a lot of new people for this project. Including Sam Maggs 
My expectations are (safely) set to zero these days but I'm always open to positive surprises. Besides, I already replayed the original game last year with all the fixes/goodies and had a blast with it, so my mind is at peace either way.
