Played for an hour and a half on PS5 today. Well its really open world DS with bits and pieces from Sekiro/Bloodborne. So fans of the franchise should have a blast. What concerns me the most is the performance. There were quite a lot of frame drops even on fps mode with PS5. Guess this was the reason for the delay. Hopefully they will be able to fix it in the next 3 months.

If that's the only concern i'm good to go. Gonna have top of the line hardware on all accounts by the time it's out. Damnable DDR5 sticks is all i miss now

Amazing game, had a blast for the first session, so much to explore even in this demo.
The PS5 performance is pretty meh, true, I think it may be network-related cuz all the players are in the same area instantly, since I noticed that I get varying performance in specific areas whenever I come back, sometimes consistent 60 fps, sometimes heavy drops to 30-ish.
Either way I am gonna get the PC version to be on the safe side, gonna go to sleep soon so I can get up at 4am for the next session
Glad to hear that the game delivers gameplay-wise, 'tis a grim era for tripey-A games and disappointments are the new normality, at least for me. I hope my ten-year-old CPU and seven-year-old GPU will be able to stoically soldier through this one as well despite the bad omens, possibly without entering the Kiln of the First Flame.
If the PS5 version isn't running properly, I'm not too confident about the PC version's performance
I really believe its network-based hiccups to some extent, its erratic and comes and goes suddenly, it did seem like a proper stress test.
There will probably be the one or the other drop left either way, but the pc version with rivatuner framerate limiting should be fine.
Cheers for explaining, cool if it's just network-side related stuff then - it does sound weird for this not to run well considering it's not a major step-up from DS3, which wasn't too demanding

Nvidia's 3xxx FEs have started selling in Italy (made me think of you !), no excuse now
Haha yep, we're slowly getting there..another few months and hopefully some of them will become available at human prices. I'm in no rush though, the games that are sitting in my backlog all run well, plus there are the golden oldies that keep me busy. Patient bear mode is always on
Anyone wants to gift me the code for tomorrow beta session ?
I have a ps5 ... so all I need is a code

Looks like the majority of the performance problems were indeed network related. Played 2h+ this morning session and it was much better. Still some drops here and there, but way better than yesterday's session.

Sacrificed some sleep to play all 5 sessions and man, I had a great fucking time.
Finished all dungeons and bosses, explored the whole demo area and also some more regions around it that I got to by accidentally clipping through the invisible wall on saturday.
Made it all the way to one of the trees by hopping from rock to rock (because you clip and fall through most of the ground once you venture too far beyond the invisible walls), also found another boss fight but only the HP bar and name loaded, the boss wasnt included in the 6 gigs of the networt test
Combat is great, basically DS3 with some added mechanics, build variation is great too, I can see alot of viable combinations and thanks to the new ashes of war mechanic, you can quickly switch between different kinds of weapon scaling and weapon skills without having to re-forge a weapon from scratch. The new counterattack after block is a fun addition and meant to discourage endless turtling because it has high posture damage, but it's still pretty balanced because you can get hit during it, its not some invincible parry animation.
Steed controls are good and the double jump makes vertical exploration alot of fun, mounted combat feels janky and weird at first but you get used to it and I liked it alot later on, especially fighting the dragon while mounted felt like a fresh twist on a souls boss fight. Most of the other bosses were really good too and Margit is probably the toughest first main boss of any Soulsbornekiro game so far, but I doubt he will be the first boss in the final game.
NPC summons are currently OP imo, they are basically the easy mode that some ppl wished for, but they do not work that well against every single boss and there are bosses where you cant use summons, so overall not a very huge deal and I do believe they will be nerfed in the final game.
The open world is densely packed and doesnt have 1 million waypoints, the bonfires show you the general direction of the next story destination in form of a small ray of light, you can add some markers and up to 5 light beacons on the map screen, which are visible in-game, its nothing intrusive and reminds of BOTW. I spent around 15 hours with the game, all the content could be done in probably around 8-10 hours, which is alot for a network test.
Overall this network test is easily my 2021 GOTY
No puzzles, its the open world version of a souls game, exactly how you would expect it.
The world is denser though and has meaningful exploration, in contrast to ubishites like asscreed or farcry.
Hidden Dungeons with their own bosses, loot, weapon skills, bits of lore etc., what else do you need to consider exploration meaningful?
Also roaming enemies, optional npcs ...
People start to claim that elden ring turns from mdeivalish- fantasy to sci-fic mecha and a later part of the game like bloodborne did from gothic to cosmic horror.
@qqq: I think you're being overly harsh for no good reason since FS games tend to all have in-depth lore and elaborate systems to make said exploration very rewarding - provided you don't have an issue with how elusive and indirect its rewards are.
That's the main gripe I could see someone having with how they deal with exploration, it always feels very "blind" going in those games, most of the effort to put it all together is expected from the player - which should rather please you ! It's part of those games' charm, imo. One can always consider it laziness, of course.
You can always argue that previous PC games (some consoles games have done it too...) have done a better job at it, but to say FS games don't reward exploration nor have a coherent background is not true. It's a sizable part of their entire appeal, imo.

None of that is new in a open world game though, or even new to this series.. quite expected i would say, especially not new in RPG leaning ones. I bet it's a lot better than UBI-soft games though, but it's not saying a lot.
Yeah not sure I got the whole open world ordeal right, all FS games previously struck me as being rather open-ended with a relative degree of freedom ; other than seamless loading I'm not sure what's changed here. But I'm clueless on the subject so bear with this pointless reply

Well, the previous design, while still open, it was more like a labyrinth of interconnected areas. From what I could gather, this game has a more traditional open world design.
Thats not meaningfull exploration. We have simplistic copy/pasted dungeons.
Meaningful gameworld can be found in Fallout 1/2, in Outcast 1999, in Gothics, in Call of Prypiat.
Modern game devs have no concept of these games unfortunately
This comes down to a matter of opinion on what "meaningful" means to one in the end, I didnt find the dungeons in Call pf Prypiat meaningful and the world of Outcast was superficial as fuck imo. Fallout and Gothic I can get behind.
It is a Souls game through and through, on a larger scale, that means it doesnt have puzzles and wont have a super focused narrative with 1000 cutscenes.
For me discovering new bosses, loot and npcs, which expand the lore and aid world-building in Souls games, is very meaningful and encourages exploration.
Probably everything from the usual formula is upped^ a level or two: starting from items, hidden paths / dungeons(?), combat (more skills? more bosses?), loot (probably more weapons) and lore (more dense / rich / well written).
Fans will like it, I assume. But anyone expecting a different type of open world, unique, innovative (or at least original) will be disappointed.

I guess to have purpose and meaning it needs to be handcrafted. All three maps in Call of Prypiat are handcrafted. Every point of interest is distinct. All have a point or twist to them. The road from one point of interest to another is filled with danger and a variety of stuff - mutants, anomalies, bandits, rival stalkers, blowouts. Day/night cycle influences the animals and mutant behaviour and presence. COP is a shinning beacon of how an open world needs to be designed to be engrossing and interesting and challenging.
Outcast the adventure game from 99 has 6 entirely different worlds where you can go at will and not a single square foot of space is wasted. Every area is handcrafted and has a purpose for being there and something unique for you to do.
It would be awesome if it's not the case with elden ring, but pretty sure it's gonna be the standard open world layout. Interested to see how the action is spread out. It's a tricky thing to not have a sparse and boring world where you spend most of your time running from a to b, but also not drown the player with constant repetition.
The fact that I could traverse the demo area in Elden Ring without using the map after a short while, proves to me that the design is definitely thought out and there are enough land marks and unique areas to be memorable. Toss me into any part of the map and I will quickly figure out where I am.
Also as I mentioned before, it is densely packed and not the kind of huge empty open world just for the sake of being huge.
Perhaps the complete game will feel different, worse or maybe even better, but all I can say is that imo the demo area of the open world is well designed, memorable, dense and fun to explore, in the same vein I loved to explore BOTW, but if you didnt like the open world in that game, then you may not like this one either.
