I tryed this game along with Toca 3 and Jacked a short while ago playing through 1/4 of the game (according to the stats).
The basic plot behind the game is you playing as a character named Kyle, the brother of original Final Fight character Cody. In the games first mission as a gentle introduction to the game mechanics and controls your matched up against a character named Handsome Bob in a Pit Fight. Upon beating the shit out of him your then thrust into the original games fictional Metro City however where this game differs is that you can wander the streets in full 3d ala True Crime/Narc/Beatdown and take on side missions plus smash up boxes, parking meters, crates etc which will often yield food, weapons and "focus", focus being a blue bar which when charged allows you to perform special moves and quick attacks - as in the first game your character has no problem eating burgers that have been lying on the ground.
To the story, its fairly generic stuff, after the encounter with Handsome Bob Cody tells you to meet him in a bar. Shortly after meeting him there some thugs enter and after beating a few waves of bad guys (using the pool cues from the bar) a scripted sequence shows Cody being taken away - your mission now to track him down and rescue him. Your aided by a pager which gives you hints as to where to go and provides a little humour as the main character writes "To Do" notes to himself. As an example immediately after beating Handsome Bob the main character makes a note instructing himself to phone Handsome Bob's wife and apologise for beating the shit out of him.
There are side missions which are optional although for me they were just so frigging ridicolous that I found myself seeking them out. One involves a waitress challenging you to stamp cockroaches in her diner whilst some laughably garrish music plays and shes screams her head off another involves a darts match with an old woman, others involve rescuing a prostitutes relative from a gang etc - you get the picture the side missions are along the same lines as "The Warriors".
Another feature that I liked was the city itself, its nowhere near as well done or large as your GTA/Warriors/True Crimes of this world but there are some nice touches like a music shop that allows you to buy tracks from featured artists like SlipKnot, Dub Pistols, Mos Def that can be used ingame, theres also a Gym (to buy moves) and other places to visit like a porno theatre with creepy customers whom when spoken to give you replies like "your blocking my view", "dont disturb me this is the part where they climax", "I like the front seats everything looks so big"- that sort of humour is in keeping with the theme of the rest of the game.
To conclude the game is barely average, won't win any prizes for originality, graphically its on a par with titles like True Crime/Narc and the most important aspect of the game namely the fighting can't hold a candle to "The Warriors" but its just such a dumb, over the top, cheesed up game and the language is so damned foul and uncalled for that its actually good fun and worthy of a few hours play. Theres a 2 player arcade mode of the revamped Final Fight Streetwise which doesn't involve the side missions and character development elements, instead focusing on pure fighting and as a result isn't as interesting plus playing though 1/4 of the game will unlock the original Final Fight arcade as a bonus - It may have been that I was playing the game in the wrong region as I was experiencing sync problems during the cutscenes but as an emulated version the original FF wasn't the best I've ever seen, the version on Capcom Classics Collection works perfectly though so I'll put it down to the region.
Game works off a multidisc by the way for anyone worried about wasting a disc.

Ok Downloaded this game. If you got a PAL xbox, then the cut scenes will be out of sync. I changed to NTSC settings (Enigma video selector) and it fixes the problem.
Oh and wtf is the Arcade mode about? You complete one level and you get some crap about "to be continued". I assume you have to clock the single player campaign first. Oh and the camera is cack!! Nonetheless it still DONT deserve 3.5 on IGN.

Ok I take it back. Played it for a further 20 mins and yes I agree 3.5 is too high. The camera is screwed and you cant even pull off half the moves you purchase. Its only coz I was a fan of the original that I even bothered to play this pile of crap. Nxt capcom game to be given a new lease of life? My bets on Streetfighter....Lets see what happens when Street Fighter 4 gets developed by a U.S studio. Oh Dear!

I actually quite like this game, even though it's really cheezy, the fighting can be good fun and the moves are easy to pull off. It's a nice distraction.

yea, same here.
after reading the reviews i thought damn this game is one of the worst ever,
but for old times“ sake i still got it and damn its actually fun.
the fighting is fun and balanced out well, its far from a great game but its alot more
fun than that crappy 24 conversion.
