Sure, these spells aren't available on characters at this point of the game. My option is to buy 200K worth of scrolls I need with 25K of funds. Or to finish the game first so i know what i need for each encounter.
What point in the game are we talking about? Woljif and Nenio have access to blur and haste among other things while Ember and Daeran have access to a lot of defensive spells. All these companions are recruitable early in the game.
As i have the game open, this was around Act 2 my chars are well past this and level 10 now. I'm not using woltjif (and you weren't either as he's not available at this point of the game), Ember and Daeron didn't have access to those spells, maybe Nenio but not using her.
The only choice were scrolls and someone with half decent use magical items, and knowing the monster casts a game ending spell on first turn, and which spell that is. There's actually no way to know you need that energy spell until your party dies and you hit reload.
That's the design for this game in a nutshell, and your rarely losing over successive turns so you could mitigate it and use that scroll above.. nope your wiped out entirely and forced to reload to deal with whatever you encounter.
Daeran has:
- Protection from Alignment (Communal) at spellcasting level 2
- Delay Poison (Communal) and Prayer at spellcasting level 3
- Protection from Energy (Communal) and Deathward at spellcasting level 4
You are right about Ember. She only has Deathward at the early levels, at least the way I built her.
Nenio on the other hand is a buffing machine:
- Blur at spellcasting level 2
- Displacement, See Invisibility (Communal) and Haste at spellcasting level 3
- She can also learn most of the other spells from scrolls
The game defiantly has places and fights that are optional, and made to be extremely difficult/skipable. If you summon a demon, don't be surprised if it eats your party. On a blind run, this gives the world a sense of danger, and consequence for your actions. The backside of the mountain in the chapel map, in chapter 3, is an example of skippable area with very dangerous npcs. There are some nice benefits to finishing it, but it's not like you miss a major part of the game by skipping it.
On difficulty in general:
Core difficulty is really the highest anyone should shoot for on their first blind run. If someone doesn't want to spoil anything by reading about or following builds, then they should probably stick to normal difficulty or lower. If your playing on the highest two difficulties with unoptimized parties, you are going to have a bad time.
The highest difficulty is primarily for people that have played the game at least once, and know what's coming up. The second highest difficulty can be done, on a first run, but a person needs intimate knowledge of the mechanics, a good build plan for the whole party, and be willing to do a bunch of tedious resting into rebuffing micromanagement.
Otherwise, the game can always be tweeked in the custom difficulty and/or through the use mods such as "Toybox" to change the rules as you see fit. If you don't like to constantly rebuff, simply increase buff times, or give all your party the two extended spell epic feats (5 min+ buffs turn into 24h).
There is also a mod that allows you to set up a buff sequencer to auto buff your party with a single button.
You can cover pretty much everything needed with a mix of wizard/sorc, cleric/oracle and shaman. There's really no reason other than "I didn't want to" or "I didn't know better" ( both perfectly reasonable ) not to have a good set of essential buffs available in Drezen, even without scrolls. It's just that you have to have a mechanically optimal party rather than the companions you actually like, and you relegate almost all spell slots for a couple of characters to just buffs, which is awfully boring but highly efficient.
The most important buffs are the immunities like Death Ward, Protection from Elements, Freedom etc. I make sure to pick 24h buff feats for at least two buffers that are always in my party ASAP and it's par of course to have like three dozen buffs active on the whole party for those 24h.
Losing the Shaman companion due to possible alignment conflicts is really painful because she's a great buffbot while still being very competent in melee in later levels.
A lich sorc is imo by far the best main in terms of effectiveness due to the sheer buffing power, angel coming second due to having less party-wide immunities, and the rest are far behind. This game really rides on immunities and un-saveable, un-resistable offensive spells.

The buff meta is the consequence of adapting PnP Pathfinder. If you play with the DM the encounter structure is fundamentally different from what you can do in a CRPG.I don't think there is a "good" way to adapt the PnP ruleset to the realities of a computer game.
They need to fill the time between story beats with various gameplay loops - mostly combat encounters so there are a gazillion of trash encounters. In tabletop that is mostly all filled with roleplay and/or skipped because no sane party is going to play out drawn out combat encounters that serve no purpose.

Trying to get into this and it's pretty damn enjoyable..
It'll be my first proper Infinity engine game (I played through BG back when I was a literal child but I didn't understand jack back then ) and it is very daunting, feels like I could fuck my entire walkthrough by taking one too many bad decision because I don't get the ruleset. For now combats are mostly easy, but from what I'm reading this won't last long
Can anyone point to a starting guide of sorts ?

Sadly, the walkthroughs are scarce and poorly made. You can find some deccent ones for how to build your companions and various classes, so you would be able to brave even the highest difficulty, easily, but for the actual role-playing part, all of them are barebone.
You can find what happens with the companions and some events if you choose certain mythic paths, but you won't find a detailed guide for choices and consequences.
You can use the one from the link below, but the guide is quite old and not updated. Most of the other guides are copy/pasting it, with all the old information from it.
I've made a speed run guide for chapter 1, one that actually circumvents the attack on the Inn, but i am afraid that i am not too far into act 2 and i don't know exactly how my choices will affect the ending.
There is a somewhat detailed guide of the secret ending, but some stuff isn't accurate anymore (for the example, at the end of Chapter 1, the Aeon Mythic choice will not allow you anymore to get the secret ending and actually only two decisions out of five at the end of the Chapter 1 are allowing you to go on the path for the Secret Ending).

Thanks a lot, this will be a good starting point, some reading to do already

Wanted to buy this with season pass since it is on sale but changed my mind.
Why:
1. 1st dlc seems to be generally disliked
2.2nd dlc is liked but was supposed to be mich longer but seems that ppl are finishing it within 2 hours.
3.3rd dlc will be a rogue lite mode..
most importantly:
4. they will release a 2nd season pass for 3 new dlcs they ll bring out after fall....
Quote:
We’ve also decided that we don’t want the 3rd DLC to be our last! Your adventures will continue with Season Pass 2, which will be available in Fall 2022. Season Pass 2 will consist of three new DLCs, bringing even more new content to the game. We will share more details later this year.

I had game breaking bug after 60hrs or so when I was playing 1st part. Even last patch, when it supposed to be complete and fixed.
So when they are going to add even more DLC I am going to wait longer for "DEFINITIVE" edition on sale.

I love this game. Coming from POEII, I thought I was in heaven, but this is something else. The details, the UI, the controls, voices, writing etc, it's all brilliant. I'll take anything from these guys at this point.

Seriously? I was thinking of getting it today, it's $40 here, but not if there's another one coming.

they already announced a enhanced edition. if they do the same as they did with kingmaker, their discount will get bigger with the EE. ill just wait for the ee edition and buy it then..
Guess I'll wait another year or two to try the finished yarr product.
Same, between all the final-but-not-really adjustments, the traditional seasonal(tm) content and mod compatibility, it is always wise to wait a bit more before jumping into such a massive cRPG. On the bright side and unlike other genres, the patient bear hopefully will be rewarded

Even after last patch for previous game I had game breaking bug and I didn't finish it, so I wouldn't hold my breath...
