I was had at 'turned based' and the W40K franchise I never got into, but that, as far asI remembered, produced a real solid one like a decade ago.
So, tried it, and it's a cheap watered-down version of a modern CIV game for dumbasses (like unmodded Civ V & VI), with way simpler mecanics and a bad 2003-era UI.
Official WH product, made by an unknown German developper, with the whole thing seemingly going out of it's way to showcase how barebone and cheap it is, and actually amounts to:
China-level quality redisign of something successful, with all it entails.
3/10, stay away. Harsh score since WAY better alternatives are available.
Easy cash-grab for anyone ready to throw money at anything WH-related because of the official licence.

I never liked the Civ series, so being simpler (which actually means there's a lot more focus on waging war and fighting battles, as it should be in WH40K) is actually a plus for me.
Agree that the UI could be better, but I don't really mind it. Also, sounds for units are missing, which would add a lot to the atmosphere. Regardless, I've been having fun with the game.
So, what other, "WAY better alternatives" are there? I won't have the time/energy in the foreseeable future to learn anything complex, so simple it is for me now.

It's OK, quite a lot of missed potential, though.
DLing Wartales atm -- let's see how much has been changed/added since the first public demo.

Finished dishonored franchise.
Felt last few chapters in 2 were a bit soft.

5 hours in. I have seen rubbish tips with less garbage in them than what can be found in this game.
It has truly surprised me. I always knew the combat was its weakest point, but I didn't realise you couldn't do things like give companions any type of armour anymore. Nothing prepared me for the MMO'ness of the world with the giant empty spaces you must traverse, and the lack of people you can converse with along the way. Oh cool, here's another big empty space, and if I walk 10-20 seconds to the other side I can open barrel and find broken longsword. Amazing.
If you've fought one mob, you've fought them all. No tactics needed, just rush in and mash everything to death. Enemies that were fearsome in DAO are now cannon fodder. Dialogue is now relegated to 3 options most of the time - take them seriously, make a joke about it or tell them to fuck off. After seeing what they did to Flemeth, I'm not sure I want to see anymore DAO characters.
Less class features, less spells and less to do. Yuck.

AFAIK there's an option when starting a new game to basically disable level scaling.

Gave up, i hated it's realtime. I wanted a turnbased.
The realtime is probably not a big deal for most people, but since this game is best played with a handcontroller - it sucks for me. Im crap using one.
I can't understand why it just don't have turnbased.

The main issue with this game was that EA bought Bioware back then for The Old Republic. It was peak "chase the MMO market that WOW dominates". And Star Wars kept getting pushed back and EA started to get angry and they wanted a product to ship in the meantime. Something for the money they just payed for two companies. So Age 2 was repurposed from an add-on that they were doing for Origins that EA didnt really approve and other concepts they were doing for an actual sequel.
All in all, this game was completed from nothing to shipped on store shelves in 15 months. Looking at it like this, its a fucking miracle that it exists. Also explaines why its so bad and everybody makes fun of it.

X-COM 2: WotC.
I went back after many years, curious to see if i had changed my mind, but no.
This is slot-machine mechanics mostly, its self aware enough about it to auto save every move, because they know you will have to pull the lever again and again, until you're lucky enough to get anywhere in this game.
If that wasn't enough the gameplay elements; respawns(re-animations), timed missions, move limit-missions, mind-control of characters, + hordes of time consuming enemies to take down - in a turn based game - the most hated gameplay elements you can think of for games, it's all in there. Absolute turd of a game.

Gameplay elements that are there just to make the game get that "it's xx hours long" are the worst.
Pacing is what makes or breaks movies, games, sometimes music.
The "how long is this game?" is the new "how are the graphics", but it has more negative consequences.
Gameplay elements which are poor and just there because the dev thinks "this needs more mechanics than the last game so let's quickly look at some random games and implement their mechanics." are the worst.

XCOM2 WOTC is one of my favorites of all time. I beat it 3 or 4 times on iron man mode on medium and hard difficulties. This game is clearly not for you if you're struggling at the beginning, as most probably you didn't even get to the point where the game gets really hard when you encounter The Chosen and the newer types of enemies that have more surpises under their sleeves and can catch you off guard easily when you meet them for the first time.
However the game is structured in the way that you don't need to win every battle and casualties are to be expected, that's why it's so immersive and exciting, you care for your best soldiers and when they die you feel that emotionally.
Regarding the slot-machine argument, it seems you're doing it wrong. When playing XCOMs even when you have 95% chance to kill the enemy you should always look for a backup plan in case the plan A won't play out as intended, and the game gives you plenty of options to do that.

I think you are contradicting yourself here talking about the pace of XCOM2 as it has much better one than any other game of it's type especially thanks to those new mechanics. IMHO XC2 new mechanics were implmented in a good way and are breath of fresh air after XC1 and the game may get boring much more quickly without them.
For example the timers - they force you out of the comfort zone of moving at a snail pace through the levels, you need to take more risks and develop new strategies. Another example is The Lost horde, if you plan your moves aqccordingly you can breeze through dozens of enemies in 1 turn thanks to the clever +1 action point mechanic after killing a zombie.
If you decide to give it another go someday then consider playing on the easiest difficulty, maybe then you won't struggle so much with those new mechanics that you hate so much.
Personally I can't wait for XCOM 3, so where's the annoucement GODDAMNIT?!

they're not so much a struggle as just boring or time consuming (pacing is struggling everywhere in the game, from short pauses where they are not needed to how slow some people talk to some of the gameplay elements which just drags).
it's too bad because i think everything apart from gameplay is a 9/10, presentation, story, atmosphere, graphics, sound, totally up my alley, wish there were more games in the genre, just better in terms of being actually fun to play.
And yeah i've watched plenty of tutorials too and the first advice is to play on easy and always save because there's no way to predict anything, it's just random how it goes.
I thought the previous game was a 3/5, not great, but not bad either, good pacing. i'd probably rate this 1 or 2 out 5, i have played enough to see many or most of the new mechanics. it's clearly not for me, it's as bad as i remember it.
I think another reason it doesn't work for me is how super cluttery (looks nice) the graphics are.. i'd rather play it in 2D i think, with way more simplistic graphics, much better for tactical gameplay.

They don't seem to make fun of it though, from what I can see it's pretty well received everywhere, including on Steam
Last night I started to do quests that have now used the same area for the 4th and 5th times. Some dungeons are literally copy + paste. I fought multiple bosses, and after clearing out the minions it was maybe 2 - 3 minutes of my 4 party members just hacking and slashing these underpowered pin cushions until they died. No input from me whatsoever.
It's rare people react to me being rude as well, it seems like most dialogue choices funnel down the same path. Eg: if you tell someone you don't care about something, or to hurry up, it's generally met with a nice response as if you said something else.
The placement of NPCs is random as hell and doesn't make sense. You can barely talk to any of them. Fatigue from walking through these barren areas of the city is really starting to set in
It's just so bad on every front. I'm only playing it because I want to know what happens for when I try Inquisition again, but it is a massive chore at this point

I fully agree on DA2 being shit game. When I tried it at launch I thought that maybe I got some alpha version becuase it felt so bland and empty and according to reviews it supposed to be at least decent.
DA:Inquisition is not the best game out there but it feels like a masterpiece in comparison to 2nd.
If you're curious about the story just watch some recap vid on youtube and don't waste your time on this sorry excuse of an AAA title.
