And Ron being a fucking idiot makes me avoid it. When so many people call it ugly, what does he do? Does he take the critique and perhaps wisely admitting he'll not use it again? Nope. He throws himself a pity party and plays on peoples emotions so they'll change their minds.
It wasn't easy to digest the goofy Piratecasso art style but eventually I learned to tolerate the edges and finished this Return as well, such a strange marine beast. Because despite some concessions and the flat new characters it did feel like a Monkey Island game and one can tell that its heart is in the right place..however, I couldn't ignore all the simplified interactions, the drier humour and just the underlying tiredness of the whole thing.
Although the game can be played as a standalone adventure, nearly everything in it is a nostalgic memberberryian reference to the first two games so it would be wise to drink an extra full mug of Grog and replay those first (something that I should have done too since I didn't remember all the details, but laziness prevailed ). The ending is once again a big case of Marmite effect as per Gilbert's tradition: some will love it while others *raises hand* will find it a classic unsatisfying cop-out accompanied by sad trombones.
On the bright side, at least the franchise didn't morph into a lousy cine-carousel and the adventure had its moments, I guess that still qualifies as a win in today's industry.
Maybe it was because I played the 'expert' mode, the "full monkey" with all puzzles, but yeah, by the end, I was done with it
Also didn't like the ending, either. Not necessarily because of how it ended instead, but mostly because
Spoiler:
there was no showdown with LeChuck or the other 3 pirate leaders!! Like, WTF?!
It could have still ended how it did, but it feels there was content cut, as the cardboard LeChuck was fighting the locksmith. And Wally just left hanging there.
Game felt easy too, probably because there's 1 click-for-all (no separate look, talk, use/taste), and it also indicates immediately when items in the inventory can be combined (which was hardly every required either).
And the same puzzle being repeated several times (eg getting keys from locksmith).
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

Totally agree, wtf was that ending.. there has to of been things cut? Or didn't they have time to fully complete the game? Did Disney/LucasArts goto Ron and say 'Arrrrh my matey, Time is up on your license, you will have to release this in September!' I'm disappointed and I'm a massive fan.
I'm disappointed, I liked Thimbleweed Park better (from a gameplay standpoint) from what I've played through so far, both humour and puzzles wise.
The puzzles are indeed rather easy and the 1 click cursor does make things largely less fun, inventive and challenging than with the old Scumm arrays of actions. The art style looks better in motion and is pretty enjoyable all in all, it's not factor in my opinion - I wish the faces were less of the abstract/Picasso style though, backgrounds are fine.
The game is rather charming, it oozes nice family-friendly vibes, but it isn't very funny nor challenging at all.. and that's kinda what I'm asking from it, the corrosive laughs and long head scratches ! It's more on the level of a good Tales game than anything, and it does feel rushed at times - the new islands have nothing on Blood Island from CMI so far, for instance.
I have a good idea what kind of meta ending I'll be getting looking at your comments - very similar to Thimbleweed Park I reckon, whose ending was downright terrible.
You can also feel the creators' growing age all over this with the tropes of transmission and whatnot, which I feel very ambivalent about. I understand the intention but it's becoming way too cliché and unoriginal of a trope of a writer in his 40-50s to me, I barely resonate with the idea at all. Again, it's charming and all, but it's not really what I was looking for either.
Welp.

I'm gradually getting more and more disappointed as I'm progressing.. fuckkkkkkkkkkk
Been there
Can't wait to see your reaction when you are finished
Can't bring myself to it, I just hate the whole concept.
Fuck this family/transmission bullshit, I love MI for the fantasy pirate escapism it brought me, not for a somewhat distant and ironic commentary on said escapism. The
Spoiler:
obvious hints with Dinky Island layout being that of Big Whoop's amusement park were more than enough.. I wish we remained in that transitory state, not this big wake-up call more similar to a kick in the nuts
.
I'll stick to replaying MI1 to 3 regularly and avoid this.
It's a shame, Thimbleweed Park was great (ending was a bit wtf, but it sorta worked in the overall setting and mood it set up) and I thought this was going to be more of the same for sure. Regardless of the art style, the fucking puzzles are so easy and unimaginative, and the dialogue ranges from funny to pretty bad.
Anyway, I doubt I'll ever bring myself to play this through.
